BMRCL rolls out ad-wrapped Namma Metro trains to boost non-fare revenue
BMRCL has entered into two separate seven-year agreements with advertising firms for this initiative. Mudra Ventures has secured exclusive rights for the Purple Line while Lokesh Outdoor has been granted the same for the Green Line. The contract values are ₹1.26 crore and ₹81.49 lakh, respectively. Letters of Acceptance (LoA) for both companies were issued on January 29.
According to senior officials at BMRCL, the contracts include permission for full exterior train wrapping and internal advertising. 'We expect to generate at least ₹25 crore per year from these contracts,' said a senior BMRCL official.
The move comes shortly after BMRCL increased metro fares by up to 71%, a decision that drew public criticism.

BMRCL sheds ad-wrap fears after trials
This is a significant shift in policy for BMRCL, which until recently was hesitant to allow wrapping trains with advertisements. Officials had previously cited concerns that such wraps might damage the exterior surfaces of the trains. However, trial runs on two trains helped alleviate those fears.
'We conducted successful trials to ensure that the vinyl wraps do not damage the train surface. The applications will be done with care, ensuring that the aesthetic value of the coaches is maintained,' the official added.
The only prior instance of a train being fully wrapped by BMRCL was not for commercial purpose. In March 2022, as part of the government of India's 'Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav' campaign, one train was wrapped with visuals and slogans celebrating India's freedom struggle. That project cost around ₹8.5 lakh and took 10 days to complete.
Currently, BMRCL operates 57 six-coach trains across its Purple and Green lines. While this is the first time the corporation is wrapping trains for commercial purposes, metro trains in Delhi, Hyderabad, and Kochi have long adopted this practice. Delhi Metro, for instance, began wrapping its trains with advertisements in 2014.
Metro's other non-fare income
To enhance non-fare revenue has been a consistent part of BMRCL's strategy. Advertising within stations and coaches, renting out commercial space for outlets, ATMs, and parking, and granting permission for filming inside metro premises are just some of the revenue-generating initiatives the BMRCL has implemented over the years. BMRCL has also introduced promotional kiosks, electric vehicle charging stations, and leasing of space for telecom infrastructure, such as towers and optical fibre cables.
One of BMRCL's most notable deals was with IKEA India Private Limited. It leased 13 acres near Nagasandra metro station to the retailer under a 60-year agreement signed in 2017. This single transaction netted the corporation ₹251 crore.
Mixed commuter reactions
The decision to use metro coaches for advertising has evoked a range of responses from commuters.
Shreya Natarajan, a daily user of the Green Line and resident of Jalahalli, expressed concern over the aesthetic compromise. 'I remember reading that the windows wouldn't be covered. But they have gone ahead and done it now. The whole look of the trains is ruined. I know they need funds, but this feels excessive. We are surrounded by ads everywhere: buses, hoardings, even on our phones. Must the metro become a moving billboard too?'
On the other hand, some passengers see the move as a necessary financial strategy.
'If the advertisement revenue helps in keeping ticket prices down and improves services, then I support it. But after the recent 71% fare hike, BMRCL must now consider reducing fares, or at least stop raising them,' said Mohan R., a commuter on the Purple Line and resident of Vijayanagar.
BMTC also banks on ads for revenue boost
Since January this year, the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has begun fully wrapping its fleet of 3,000 non-AC buses with advertisements, aiming to enhance its non-fare revenue. Previously, advertising was restricted to the rear panels of the buses.
This initiative follows a 15% fare hike implemented across all four State-run transport corporations in Karnataka. According to BMTC officials, the bus wrapping initiative is expected to bring in over ₹3 crore every month. With a total fleet of 6,158 buses, including 1,027 electric buses, the corporation anticipates a significant boost in revenue.
In the financial year 2023–24, BMTC earned ₹811 crore from non-traffic revenue sources, such as leasing out land, bus terminals, commercial stalls, office spaces, and parking lots. Revenue from rear-side bus advertisements also contributed to this sum.

Namma Metro crosses 10 lakh daily boardings after Yellow Line launch
: Namma Metro recorded its highest-ever single-day ridership on Monday, August 11, a day after the launch of the long-awaited Yellow Line. The milestone came as total boardings across all three operational lines touched 10,48,031 passengers. According to Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) data, the Purple Line (Line 1) carried 4,51,816 commuters, while the Green Line (Line 2) saw 2,91,677 boardings. The newly inaugurated Yellow Line (Line 3) registered 52,215 passengers on its first day of commercial operations. Additionally, 2,52,323 passengers used interchange stations. The previous highest daily ridership was recorded on June 4, when 9,66,732 people travelled by metro, at a time when only the Purple and Green lines covering 76.95 km were operational, said a senior BMRCL official. This came as large crowds gathered for the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) victory celebrations that eventually ended in tragedy. 'With the Yellow Line now in service, expanding the network to 96 km, this is the highest number of passengers to have travelled by metro in a single day,' the official added. Officials attributed Monday's surge to the addition of the Yellow Line, which had been delayed for over four years before finally opening to the public. Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally inaugurated the Yellow Line on Sunday. The 19.15-kilometre corridor, built under Phase 2 of the metro project at a cost of ₹7,160 crore, connects R.V. Road to Bommasandra, passing through key commercial and IT zones. The line includes 16 stations and links southern parts of the city to major employment hubs, aiming to significantly reduce road congestion. With the Yellow Line in service, Bengaluru's operational metro network has expanded to 96 km. BMRCL anticipates that the new stretch will benefit more than eight lakh commuters in South Bengaluru daily and push the city's overall metro ridership towards an estimated 12.5 lakh passengers per day.

BMTC launches new metro feeder routes for Bengaluru's Yellow Line
The Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has introduced new metro feeder services to enhance last-mile connectivity for passengers using the recently opened Yellow Line. The new services, operational from Tuesday, will connect six metro stations — Hosur Road, Beratena Agrahara, Electronics City, Infosys Foundation Konappana Agrahara, Hebbagodi, and Bommasandra — through four routes, operated by 12 buses making 96 trips daily. With Namma Metro's #YellowLine now operational, Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy @RLR_BTM today launched extended metro feeder bus services to stations along the new corridor to boost first- and last-mile connectivity.@the_hindu@ — Darshan Devaiah B P (@DarshanDevaiahB) August 12, 2025 According to a release, the feeder routes include MF-22, MF-22A, MF-22B, and MF-22C, covering key areas such as Electronics City Wipro Gate, Kodathi Wipro, Bommasandra, and Konappana Agrahara. These services are expected to significantly benefit commuters travelling in and around the Electronics City corridor, one of Bengaluru's busiest tech hubs. 'BMTC, which operates an average of 44 lakh passenger trips daily through 6,217 buses, has been expanding its metro feeder network since October 2023. Services were first launched at K.R. Puram railway station and BTM Layout bus stand, and have since grown to 45 routes and 214 schedules, carrying over 1.2 lakh passengers daily,' Transport Minister Ramalinga Reddy said after the launch of the feeder services. In Electronics City area alone, BMTC runs 3,000 trips on 100 routes, catering to 14,000 passengers per day. 'The corporation has also introduced QR code-based information systems at metro bus stops and inside trains, enabling commuters to access feeder bus schedules, live tracking, and other travel details on their phones,' Mr. Reddy added. Commuters have also welcomed the new feeder services. Mukund K. from the Save Sarjapura Association said: 'The recent addition of MF-22 and MF-22A routes is a huge boost to connectivity between the Hosur Road (Yellow) metro line and sections of Sarjapur Road. While this is a good start, the number of buses must be gradually increased to improve adoption.' 'We have also conveyed to the Transport Minister that the Dommasandra area of Sarjapur is experiencing extremely high growth due to the presence of the largest school district, along with its connectivity to Whitefield via SH-35 and to Electronics City via SH-168. BMTC should create a metro feeder route connecting Bommasandra metro to Dommasandra,' Mr. Mukund added.
