Poland manager Michal Probierz resigns after Robert Lewandowski's threat to quit
Poland manager Michal Probierz has resigned four days after striker Robert Lewandowski announced he would no longer play for his country under him.
Probierz, 52, who was under contract until 2026 after replacing Fernando Santos in the role in September 2023, relieved Lewandowski of the team captaincy earlier this week, replacing him with Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
Barcelona forward Lewandowski responded by saying Probierz had lost his trust and that he would quit international football "for as long as he (Probierz) remains in charge".
Probierz said in a statement: "I came to the conclusion that in the current situation, the best decision for the good of the national team will be my resignation from the position of the head coach.
"Performing this function was the fulfilment of my professional dreams and the greatest honour in my life.
"Of course, I would like to thank all the players with whom I had the pleasure to meet on this road. I will keep my fingers crossed for all of you, because the national team is our common national good."
The Polish Football Association added: "We would like to thank Michal Probierz for his cooperation and commitment in leading the national team, wishing him success in his further professional career."
Poland, who lost 2-1 in Finland in a World Cup qualifier on Tuesday, finished bottom of their group at Euro 2024 under Probierz, who won nine and lost seven of his 21 matches in charge.

Owen Farrell agrees return to Saracens as player-coach on five-year deal
Owen Farrell has agreed an immediate return to Saracens and will return to his boyhood club after a torrid season with Racing 92. The 33-year-old former England captain will join Saracens as a player-coach this summer on a five-year deal. Saracens have secured Farrell's signing after agreeing a compensation package with Racing 92 of around €200,000 – significantly less than the €500,000 paid by the French club last year – and reaching a deal over personal terms. Farrell had signed a two-year deal with Racing but endured an injury-hit first season and informed the club of his desire to return to the Premiership towards the end of the campaign. Farrell's move back to Saracens makes him available for England's summer tour of Argentina and the USA but it is unclear if he wants to return to international duty or if the head coach Steve Borthwick wants to recall him. The door also remains open for Farrell to join the British & Irish Lions tour of Australia having been left out of the initial 38-man squad by father Andy. Farrell will be in Dublin to run his rule over the Lions' warm-up match against Argentina next Friday, having joined Sky Sports' punditry team. Farrell spent 16 years at Saracens, having made his debut aged 17, and won six Premiership titles and three European crowns with the club. After a trying 2023 World Cup campaign in which he was booed by England supporters, he announced he was taking a step back from international duty before his move to the Top 14 materialised. At Racing, however, Farrell has had a niggling groin problem required surgery around the turn of the year. His final appearance for the club came in their Challenge Cup semi-final defeat by Lyon last month when he was withdrawn during the first half with a head injury. Stuart Lancaster, who had given Farrell his England debut, was sacked as Racing head coach in January. Saracens were not the only Premiership side interested in bringing Farrell back to England but once his desire to return was known, Mark McCall wasted little time in securing his signature. After Saracens's final match of the season against Bath, McCall confirmed Saracens were exploring bringing Farrell back to the club as injury dispensation with Alex Lozowski ruled out until Christmas with an achilles injury. Farrell will be taking a significant pay cut compared to the salary he previously earned at Saracens. 'He [Owen] doesn't have to play 10, he can play other positions as well,' McCall said at the time. 'So for our young talents who are developing, it could be a great thing to have him there.' 2025 Club World Cup betting tips, predictions, and odds
THE LONG-AWAITED revamped FIFA Club World Cup is just a matter of days away. The tournament has been going for 25 years, but it has never been as big or as exciting as it is this year. The new format will see the competition run from June 14th to July 13th in the United States, and will see 32 of the best teams in the world come together to determine which is the best on the planet right now. The tournament will follow the same format as the World Cup, with eight groups of four competing before heading into a single game knockout stage. The likes of PSG, Real Madrid, and Manchester City are heavily fancied by the bookies, but what do our team of betitng experts here at The Irish Sun think? Keep reading this Club World Cup tips and betting guide to find out. 🔥 Best tips for the Club World Cup Inter Milan to reach the quarter finals - Bayern Munich as the highest scoring team - Palmeiras to Win Group A - Cole Palmer for Most Assists - Kylian Mbappé as top goalscorer - Man City to reach the final - PSG to win the Club World Cup - READ MORE SUN STORIES 🏆 2025 Club World Cup odds - Top 20 favourites* Real Madrid - PSG - Manchester City - Bayern Munich - Chelsea - Inter Milan - Atletico Madrid - Borussia Dortmund - Juventus - Flamengo - Benfica - Palmeiras - Boca Juniors - FC Porto - River Plate - Botafogo - Fluminense - Al Hilal Riyadh - Inter Miami CF - FC Salzburg - * Odds are subject to change. Inter Milan to reach the quarter-finals Inter Milan will be looking to bounce back quickly from their 5-0 Champions League final humiliation against PSG, and a relatively easy group stage should allow them to hit the ground running. River Plate will present the biggest challenge in the group for Christian Chivu's side, with Monterrey and Urawa Red Diamonds making up the numbers. After winning the group, a tie with Fluminense is likely to stand between them and the quarter-finals. While the Brazilian outfit is not going to be a pushover, Inter should have too much for them, making a bet on them reaching the quarter finals at evens with bet365 a very attractive prospect. I would also consider looking at Borussia Dortmund to reach the quarter-finals. They are available at the same price and are likely to get through their group before encountering River Plate in the round of 16. They will have too much for the Argentinians but could come unstuck in the quarters against Real Madrid. ⚽ Highest scoring team - Bayern Munich The highest scoring team market presents some really interesting options for punters, but it is Bayern Munich who get our nod here. Vincent Kompany's team has one of the easier groups, which should give them plenty of opportunity to get their goal tally up early. They netted 99 goals in 34 games this season, which should be enough to leave any defence quaking in their boots. They are favourites in this market for a reason, and we think there is value in backing them at 2/1 with SBK. ⚽ Palmeiras to win Group A Unsurprisingly, UEFA clubs are the favourites to win each of their respective groups, but we feel as though there is a very good chance for Palmerias to ruin that in Group A. Porto are the favourites for the group, but they arrive in the tournament off the back of a very underwhelming domestic campaign. While they finished the season in good form, they finished 11 points off league winners Sporting, and were also fairly underwhelming in Europe. Palmerias arrive on a strange run of form, sitting two points off the top of the Brazilian league and losing just two of their last 18 games. If there is going to be an upset in the group stages, this could well be it. You can back Palmerias to win at 9/5 with Spreadex. ⚽ 🥅 Cole Palmer for most assists We're rounding off our betting tips with our most ambitious shout: Cole Palmer to bag the most assists at 33/1 with bet365. Palmer had a sluggish second half to the season at Stamford Bridge, but showed that he was more than capable of rising to the occasion when needed, bagging two assists in Chelsea's 4-1 Europa League Conference final win against Real Betis. Chelsea has a great opportunity to hit the ground running in this tournament, coming up against Flamengo, ES Tunis, and Los Angeles FC. A quick look at international tournaments shows that many of the top scorers and assist-makers end up racking up their tallies in the early stages, and at 33/1, Palmer is well worth a punt with bet365. ⚽ Club World Cup top goalscorer Unsurprisingly, it is the men most would consider the three best strikers in the world right now who dominate the Club World Cup top goalscorer markets: Erling Haaland, Kylian Mbappé, and Harry Kane. Kane offers excellent value and comes into the tournament on good form, having netted six in his last nine games in the Bundesliga and scored twice in England's last two matches. He is Haaland spent a period of time on the sidelines towards the end of this season, only returning for City's final four games. He has bagged two goals for Norway in his two outings, though, including a goal in their 3-0 victory over Italy. Finally, Mbappé is the favourite. The Frenchman comes into the tournament on an excellent run of form, having scored ten in his last six games for Real Madrid, wrapping up a dominant first season at the Bernabeu. He will face Al Hili, Pachuca, and RB Salzburg in the group stage and aim to continue his impressive form. His best price is also 6/1 with Spreadex, which also presents excellent value. All three of these could be worth a punt at their current odds, but I would lean more towards Mbappé given his current form, with Kane being my second pick. If I were looking for an outsider, Serhou Guirrasay from Dortmund offers good value at 12/1 with BetVictor. Dortmund face three non-UEFA sides in the group stage, and he finished the season in fine form, bagging nine in his last ten games. ⚽ 🥅 Club World Cup to reach the final The team to reach the final market has a number of attractive selections. We foresee a semi-final showdown between Man City and Bayern Munich, pitting Pep Guardiola against his former Man City captain, Vincent Kompany. City are currently priced at 5/2 with BetVictor to reach the final, while Bayern are available at 10/3. City will be desperate to get their hands on some gold after their first trophyless season since 2016/17, while Kompany will want to outwit his former manager. We lean slightly towards Man City here, but both teams present great value and are worth considering at their prices. ⚽ 🥅 🏆 2025 Club World Cup winner Real Madrid are the favourites for the competition, but right now, I find it hard to look past PSG. Luis Enrique's men will be full of confidence following what was arguably the most dominant Champions League win of all time, and at 5/1 with talkSPORT BET, they offer fantastic value. The European champions will likely come up against Real Madrid in the semi-finals, but we think Enrique's team will have the better of their Spanish rivals. Xabi Alonso has had little time to prepare for the tournament, and while Madrid are undoubtedly an excellent side, Enrique's knowledge of his squad and his side's momentum make them a much more attractive opposition to win the tournament, especially at 5/1. ⚽ 🥅 Q&A for FIFA Club World Cup 2025 FIFA has shaken up the Club World Cup this year, leaving punters with plenty of questions. A guide to the Club World Cup as Man City, Chelsea and Messi prepare for action
The FIFA Club World Cup, which involves Premier League sides Manchester City and Chelsea, begins this weekend. Here, the PA news agency examines the new-look 32-team tournament. Manchester City were the last winners of the Club World Cup in its old format in 2023 (PA) The basics The Club World Cup is not a new concept but this is the first to be staged on a scale more akin to an international tournament. Previously a short annual event featuring each continent's champions, the competition has been expanded hugely. It will now be played every four years and follow the format used from 1998-2022 by the traditional World Cup (without the third-place play-off). There are eight groups of four with the top two from each advancing to the last 16. The first game takes place on June 14 (the early hours of June 15 UK time) with the final on July 13. Hosts The tournament is being staged in the United States – one of the hosts of next year's World Cup – with venues predominantly along the eastern side of the country including New York, which will host the semi-finals and final, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Atlanta, Orlando and Miami. Seattle and Los Angles are the only two west coast venues. The #FIFACWC group-stage is locked in. 🔐 — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) June 1, 2025 Teams There are 12 European qualifiers and six from South America, four each from Africa, Asia and North America/Caribbean and one from Oceania. An extra side from the host nation (Inter Miami) make up the 32. In European terms, the Champions League winners from 2021-24 were automatically entered – Chelsea (2021), Real Madrid (2022 and 2024) and City (2023). Paris St Germain's recent success counts for 2029 qualification but they claimed their slot based on ranking points alongside Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund. There is a limit of two teams per country, meaning the likes of Liverpool, Barcelona, Napoli and AC Milan miss out despite having a higher ranking than other teams. The cap was relaxed for Brazil because the country produced four different South American champions in succession (Palmeiras, Flamengo, Fluminense and Botafogo). Chelsea will be bidding to follow up their Conference League triumph with further success (Jane Barlow/PA) Chelsea and City Chelsea are first in action against LAFC in Group D on June 16, with games against Flamengo and ES Tunis to follow. Bayern Munich could lie in wait in the last 16. City open against Morocco's Wydad Casablanca on June 18 and also play Al Ain of Abu Dhabi and Juventus in Group G. Real Madrid are a potential first knockout round opponent. England captain Harry Kane will lead the attack for Bayern Munich (Andrew Milligan/PA) Other notable games The tournament begins with Lionel Messi's Inter Miami taking on Al Ahly of Egypt on June 14. PSG's first outing since winning the Champions League sees them play Atletico Madrid the following day. Trent Alexander-Arnold could make his debut when favourites Real Madrid start against Saudi Arabia's Al Hilal on June 18 and Harry Kane's Bayern have an intriguing opener against Boca Juniors on June 20. 32 clubs, one tournament, one champion. Be there when history is made at the #FIFACWC! 🤩🏆 — FIFA Club World Cup (@FIFACWC) May 28, 2025 Prize money The tournament has had its detractors but FIFA has sought to banish any apathy by allocating a huge prize pot of £775million. This makes it the most lucrative event, on a per-game basis, ever staged. The money to be awarded will vary by continent but European teams will take home around £30million just for participating and could scoop £97million if they win it. Lionel Messi's involvement in the tournament has raised eyebrows (Mike Egerton/PA) Controversies The revamped Club World Cup has not been without issue, primarily due to its positioning in the calendar. With European seasons beginning in mid-August, the complaints about fixture congestion and workload have been numerous. FIFA also received considerable criticism for awarding the host nation spot to Inter Miami – and therefore Messi – without them having been crowned Major League Soccer champions. Recent comments by president Gianni Infantino apparently urging participating clubs to sign another ratings-driver in Cristiano Ronaldo alerted the cynics further. There was also a late change to the line-up with LAFC winning a 'play-in' to replace Mexico's Club Leon, who were excluded over their owners' links to another entrant in Pachuca. Where to watch Streaming service DAZN has the primary rights to the competition and will show all matches live and free of charge. Channel 5 has agreed a deal to broadcast 23 of the 63 matches in the UK.
