Watch: World's largest cheese tasting held in Colombia

UPI5 days ago

June 19 (UPI) -- A Colombian dairy company celebrated its 80th anniversary by gathering 1,185 people to participate in the world's largest cheese tasting event.
Guinness World Records confirmed Alpina Productos Alimenticios S.A.S BIC earned the record for the world's largest cheese tasting event when 1,185 people sampled dairy delicacies in Sopó, Cundinamarca.
The company took the record from Australia's Kangaroo Valley Agricultural & Horticultural Association, which gathered 1,000 people for a cheese tasting in 2019.
Guinness World Records rules required all participants to sample three varieties of cheese. The cheeses chosen for the event were Gruyere, Sopó and Argovia.
"This event not only celebrates the art of cheese tasting, but it also highlights Alpina's dedication to excellence in the dairy industry," Guinness World Records Adjudicator Natalia Ramirez said. "Congratulations to all participants for making this historic milestone possible!"

Japan's ispace blames 'hard landing' on moon on Laser Range Finder

June 24 (UPI) -- Japanese company ispace said Tuesday that a "hard landing" during its attempted lunar landing in early June was due to an anomaly in the Laser Range Finder. In the analysis of the "SMBC X HAKUTO-R VENTURE MOON" mission 2 ispace said the hard landing was due to an "anomaly in the laser rangefinder hardware," and the telemetry data also revealed no issues with the lander's software or propulsion system. The LRF unit did not provide altitude measurement until it was less than half a mile off the ground. However, it was initially designed to provide altitude data when the spacecraft was at at least about 2 miles above the surface. Laser light reflected back to the lander, lower power of the laser, reduced performance at higher velocities or effects from the space environment, such as a vacuum or radiation are several factors that could have played a role in the performance of the LRF. "On June 6, despite the united efforts and dedication of the ispace team, our second attempt at a lunar landing was unsuccessful, resulting in deep disappointment," said Founder and CEO of Ispace Takeshi Hakamada. "We deeply regret that we were unable to meet the expectations of our shareholders, payload customers, HAKUTO-R partners, government officials, and all others who supported us." "Ispace will not let this be a setback. We will not stop here, but as determined pioneers of the cislunar economy, we will strive to regain the trust of all stakeholders and embark on the next mission. Chief technology officer at ispace Ryo Ujiie said the company was taking major steps to combat the problem. One is to conduct a better testing plan to see how the laser rangefinder operates under different conditions. The second is to look into getting a different laser rangefinder. These changes will not be in effect for missions 3 and 4, which are scheduled to launch in 2027. "We take it very seriously," Takeshi Hakamada, chief executive of ispace, said of the failed landings of its first two missions. "However, the important part is that we keep trying. There can be some failures, but we keep improving our systems." "Our primary goal today was to convey that ispace, as a challenger, is already moving forward towards its next mission," he said, vowing to regain the trust of its customers and other stakeholders. "We're committed to demonstrating that Ispace will continue to grow undeterred by this setback." PhonePe reportedly planning $1.5bn India IPO

Walmart-backed Indian fintech firm PhonePe is gearing up for an initial public offering (IPO) to raise up to $1.5bn, Bloomberg reported citing people familiar with the matter. The IPO is expected to value the company at approximately $15bn, with plans to file a draft red herring prospectus as early as August, Bloomberg added. Founded in 2015, PhonePe is India's 'largest' digital payments provider, boasting over 610 million registered users and processing 340 million rupees of transactions daily, per Bloomberg. According to Reuters, the company serves more than 600 million registered users across 40 million merchants, handling over 310 million online transactions daily via India's unified payments interface (UPI). In 2023, PhonePe raised $100m from Ribbit Capital, Tiger Global Management, and TVS Capital Funds, valuing the company at $12bn at the time. The firm has engaged Kotak Mahindra Capital Co., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Citigroup Inc., and Morgan Stanley to manage the offering, Bloomberg reported. Discussions remain ongoing, and details may change, according to Bloomberg's sources. A PhonePe spokesperson did not respond to Bloomberg's request for comment. In May this year, PhonePe launched an upgraded version of its SmartSpeaker, a device designed to facilitate payment voice notifications for merchants. The latest iteration of the SmartSpeaker is manufactured in India and retains the voice notification feature of the original model, which was introduced in 2022. The device supports 21 language options and includes a celebrity voice feature. In April, the company introduced the UPI Circle feature on its app, enabling users to make payments to family members, friends, or other trusted individuals within a designated group. "PhonePe reportedly planning $1.5bn India IPO – report " was originally created and published by Electronic Payments International, a GlobalData owned brand. Duppla Drives Financial Inclusion in Colombia With Begini's Behavioural Data Insights

BOGOTÁ, Colombia--(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Duppla, a Colombian PropTech startup, has successfully deployed Begini's behavioural data solution to accelerate its rent-to-own model, supporting its mission to unlock homeownership for underserved families. 'This is the kind of partnership that validates both our vision and our execution,' said James Hume, CEO, Begini. 'We're not just improving credit scoring; we're reshaping how financial institutions think about inclusion and risk in emerging economies.' Begini's platform has enabled Duppla to enhance credit assessment processes, expand access to its housing solution, and gain strategic insights to support sustainable portfolio growth. Facing the challenge of serving credit-invisible consumers typically excluded by traditional financial institutions, Duppla turned to Begini, a behavioural data platform that enables ethical and predictive decision-making for thin-file customers. With Begini's solution, Duppla achieved same-day integration, launching psychometric credit evaluations with minimal technical effort. Since launch, Duppla has seen remarkable adoption: 93% of applicants have completed the assessment process, validating the user-centric design and intuitive interface of Begini's solution. Initially introduced as a complementary input, Begini's psychometric score is now a core component of Duppla's credit policy. 'The psychometric score is critical in our customer acceptance policy,' said Nicolás Ayala, from Duppla. 'Begini enables us to analyse risk in ways traditional systems cannot, which helps us extend access while maintaining portfolio quality.' Beyond credit scoring, Duppla has embraced the broader potential of character-based insights. Personality traits such as conscientiousness, honesty, and moderation, delivered as part of Begini's assessments, are now analysed to improve customer lifecycle value, and long-term engagement. This partnership has also reshaped internal alignment. The sales team, initially uncertain about user receptiveness, now promotes the psychometric assessment as a gateway to benefits and tailored offers. Internally, commercial staff have also seen value: by leveraging Begini's insights, they can approve more applicants responsibly, aligning incentives across customer acquisition and portfolio growth. Begini's solution has become a strategic asset in attracting and reassuring investors. By strengthening risk controls and demonstrating scientific, data-driven underwriting, Duppla has enhanced transparency and trust for those financing their housing assets. 'One of the top questions we get from stakeholders is how we manage risk given our customer segment,' said Ayala. 'Begini has allowed us to present a robust, innovative process that sets us apart and builds real confidence in our growth model.' 'This is the kind of partnership that validates both our vision and our execution,' said James Hume, CEO, Begini. 'We're not just improving credit scoring; we're reshaping how financial institutions think about inclusion and risk in emerging economies.'
