Kurdistan Region prepares to host Iranian pilgrims en route to Karbala
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) on Friday designated the Erbil International Exhibition Center as a main hub for receiving Iranian pilgrims heading to Karbala for the Arbaeen pilgrimage.
According to Shafaq News correspondent, tens of thousands of pilgrims continue to arrive in Erbil through the Haji Omran border crossing and other entry points toward central and southern Iraq.
Under the KRG's official plan, four key stations have been designated to assist pilgrims: the Haji Omran border gate, Kani Miran area, the Erbil Expo Center, and the Sherawa checkpoint. Additional mobile stations have also been deployed along the roads to facilitate movement and provide services.
The Barzani Charity Foundation (BCF) is overseeing many of the support services, operating around the clock with field teams offering food, medical aid, transportation, and general assistance.
Authorities have provided logistical facilities, including food, water, internet access, mobile clinics, cooling stations, sleeping tents, and ambulance services.
Last year, more than 110,000 Iranian pilgrims entered through Kurdistan Region crossings, with nearly 3,000 medical cases treated and no major traffic incidents reported.
In a joint press conference with Iranian Consul General Faramarz Asadi, Erbil Governor Omed Khoshnaw noted that the number of visitors is increasing daily and may surpass last year's figures. He affirmed that the KRG is committed to ensuring the safety and smooth passage of pilgrims in cooperation with relevant security and service institutions, as well as charitable organizations, particularly the Barzani Charity Foundation.

Egypt launches new trade corridor linking Saudi Arabia and Iraq
Shafaq News – Cairo Egypt inaugurated a new trade corridor with Saudi Arabia and Iraq, which aims to establish a regional trade route connecting the three countries, according to a report published Tuesday by Al-Masry Al-Youm. The report said that Safaga Port on the Red Sea recently handled the first trial shipment within the project. The initiative is part of a modern multimodal transport system combining maritime shipping and land transport, designed to reshape trade flows between the Arab Mashreq (Arab Levant) and North Africa. Instead of relying on traditional, time-consuming, and costly routes, the new path starts in Cairo, passes through Egypt's national highway network to Safaga Port, continues across the Red Sea to Saudi Arabia's Neom Port, and then moves overland to Erbil in Iraq's Kurdistan Region. Maritime sources at Safaga Port told the Egyptian Al-Masry Al-Youm Newspaper that the pilot shipment demonstrated a reduction of more than 50 percent in transport time compared with conventional routes. They added that this gives the new corridor a strong competitive advantage, particularly at a time when some traditional international trade passages face geopolitical challenges.

40+ people missing after boat capsizes in Nigeria
Shafaq News – Abuja More than 40 people went missing after a boat carrying over 50 passengers capsized in Nigeria's Sokoto state, the country's Emergency Agency reported on Sunday. In a statement, Nigerian authorities confirmed that around 10 passengers were rescued, while search and recovery operations continue. Boat accidents are frequent in Nigeria, often caused by overcrowding and poorly maintained waterways, particularly during the rainy season when rivers and lakes swell. These incidents have claimed dozens of lives across the country. Earlier this week, at least 13 people died in a boat accident in central Niger state, while the previous month saw six girls drown in Jigawa state when a boat transporting them home from farm work overturned. Additionally, in August 2024, a wooden boat carrying farmers to rice fields in Sokoto capsized, killing at least 16.
