Government-run colleges: Punjab CM agrees to establish ‘College Management Council'
She reviewed proposals for governance reforms and institutional autonomy in public sector universities. She informed, 'many foreign universities including those of UK, Korea and Kazakhstan have expressed interest in setting up campuses in Punjab. University of London, University of Brunel, University of Gloucestershire, University of Leicester and others have offered to set up campuses in Punjab.'
The Chief Minister directed the authorities concerned to emphasize on improving teaching quality, innovative research and creative knowledge in the universities of the province. She directed them to prioritise focus on human resource development in these universities.
She said, 'digital transformation and global connectivity in universities is also among priorities.' She directed to hold Higher Education Conference in Punjab for the first time, and sought a detailed report on inactive commerce colleges in Punjab.
The CM agreed to establish College Management Council for government colleges in Punjab, and directed the relevant authorities to implement 'KPI' system to raise standard of education in the universities.
She said, 'The performance of a Vice Chancellor will be evaluated on the basis of 'KPI' criteria.' She also sought a report on underperforming colleges in the province, and directed to establish Education Vigilance Squad, which will conduct surprise checks on attendance, cleanliness, quality of education and other issues in educational institutions. She said, 'Immediate action will be taken on the report of Education Vigilance Squad under the supervision of Minister for Education.' She reviewed a proposal to set green, blue, yellow and grey rankings of the universities based on their quality of education.
The Chief Minister received a detailed briefing on CM Punjab Honhar Scholarship and Laptop Schemes. She was briefed by the authorities concerned, 'More than 19,000 students from other provinces, besides Punjab, have applied for these Schemes of Chief Minister Punjab.' She also reviewed Higher Education Strategic Plan/Roadmap 2025-29.

KP launches ‘ILMpact' to promote literacy
PESHAWAR: The provincial government has launched a new initiative titled 'ILMpact' in collaboration with the United Kingdom's Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) to enrol out-of-school children and improve the quality of education in the province. The programme, being implemented through the British Council, was officially launched by Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur. The launching ceremony was attended by Provincial Minister for Elementary and Secondary Education Faisal Khan Tarakai, British Council Country Director James Hampson, officials from the Elementary and Secondary Education Department, and representatives of partner organisations. ILMpact programme aims to benefit 80,000 out-of-school children across eight districts of the province — Battagram, Mansehra, Swabi, Buner, Shangla, Khyber, Mohmand, and Dera Ismail Khan. Under this initiative, comprehensive efforts will be made to enrol out-of-school children and to improve the standard of education. As part of the programme, master trainers will be prepared to deliver modern training to teachers, and capacity-building initiatives will be undertaken for Parent-Teacher Councils and School Management Committees in government schools. The programme places particular emphasis on the education of girls, underprivileged and special children and those from minority communities. Additionally, awareness campaigns will be launched to promote education, especially girls' education in the selected districts. Addressing the ceremony, Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur expressed his gratitude to all partner organisations for making the ILMpact programme a reality. He stated, 'Our government's mission is not just to provide education but to ensure the provision of quality education. Highlighting his government's commitment to education, the Chief Minister noted that an education emergency has been declared in the province, with a substantial increase in the budget for elementary and secondary education. 'This year, 21 percent of the total provincial budget has been earmarked for elementary and secondary education,' he said. 'Plans are also under way to provide free textbooks, stationery, and school bags to students in government schools. In parallel, attention is being given to improving the quality of education through teacher training, and the recruitment of 18,000 new teachers on merit is currently in progress', he concluded. Textile exporters alarmed by 19pc US tariff decision
KARACHI: Following the US decision to impose a 19 percent tariff on Pakistani goods, Pakistani textile exporters have expressed concerns, stating that this move will increase prices in the US, initially affecting exports. However, they believe business conditions will gradually improve. Young textile exporter and Director of Lakhany Silk Mills, Farhan Lakhany, said the tariff has significantly affected their sales in the US He added that while exports to the United Arab Emirates have increased, the US was Pakistan's most lucrative market and has now been impacted. He explained that due to the tariffs, product prices have risen. According to Farhan Lakhany, although Pakistan faces lower tariffs compared to Bangladesh and India, higher production costs negate any advantage. Nevertheless, he emphasized the need to remain optimistic about the future. Zardari, Pezeshkian agree to work for regional peace
ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari and Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday reaffirmed the commitment of Pakistan and Iran to strengthening bilateral cooperation and working jointly for peace and stability in the region. The reaffirmation came during a meeting between the two leaders at Aiwan-e-Sadr, where they discussed a wide range of issues pertaining to mutual interest, regional developments, and avenues for deeper collaboration. According to an official statement, both sides agreed on expanding cooperation across various sectors for the mutual benefit of their peoples. President Zardari underscored the historical and fraternal relations between Pakistan and Iran, rooted in shared religion, culture, and mutual respect. He lauded Iran's principled stance on key regional issues and acknowledged Tehran's continued support for regional cooperation and solidarity during times of crisis. He expressed gratitude to the Iranian leadership, particularly Supreme Leader Ayatollah Syed Ali Khamenei, for consistently raising their voice in support of the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK). President Zardari also strongly condemned unprovoked Israeli aggression against Iran during the recent 12-day conflict, and praised the unity and resilience shown by the Iranian nation. He expressed hope that President Pezeshkian's visit would serve to further strengthen the brotherly relations between the two neighbouring countries.
