Junior Springboks name team for U20 final
The unchanged line-up means the bench will again feature a split of six forwards and two backs in what promises to be an epic battle between the two southern hemisphere rugby rivals.
Junior Springbok head coach Kevin Foote said the SA U20s have done well to reach the final and they are excited to face their greatest rivals with a settled side.
'This has been our settled combination for most of the year, and the team play with great synergy,' said Foote, who admitted it was yet again difficult to leave players out of the match-day squad.
'Given how well everyone has played, it was such a difficult task to leave anyone out. We are grateful for the absolute selflessness of the players not selected for Saturday's final, and for how hard they are training to ensure the team is well prepared for New Zealand.
'We decided to pick six forwards on the bench yet again, as they made a difference in the semi-final against Argentina, and we also learned some valuable lessons when we faced New Zealand in the U20 Rugby Championship in South Africa a few months ago.'
Saturday's final kicks off at 20.30.

Tayla Kavanagh: A rising star in distance running focused on upcoming race in Durban
Tayla Kavanagh, a promising talent in South African distance running, is gearing up for her next race. Image: Supplied At just 24, Hillcrest-born Tayla Kavanagh has established herself as one of South Africa's top young distance runners. She will be in Durban this weekend to take part in the Totalsports Women's Race on August 3. A full-time elite athlete, Kavanagh said she has been running since the age of nine. 'I have always enjoyed running since I was young,' she said. 'I started at school in my junior years at 9 years old running cross country and I have been running ever since and have progressed over the years since then.' She said she was excited to get the opportunity to race in Durban. 'I thoroughly enjoy racing at home in Durban,' she said. 'I enjoy the fast, flat route, and the hometown support is always incredibly special. 'Training has continued as usual towards race day and I mentally prepare myself to race by reminding myself what I have already achieved, what I have done in training and focusing on my own goals for each day.' She expects strong performances in Durban given the favourable conditions. 'The support means a lot to me, and I truly appreciate it a lot. It always makes racing in Durban super special as I know there is a lot of support out there and people rooting for me.' She said she looks up to many inspirational women. 'There are a lot of inspirational women across the globe, who are working hard, pushing limits and testing themselves and I have been inspired to do the same and chase after my own goals and dreams, one step at a time.' Smith, Canny power into World Aquatics semis
SINGAPORE - Chris Smith has booked a place in the men's 50m breaststroke semi-finals at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships in Singapore. Smith burst to victory in heat nine after touching the wall in just 26.82, ahead of Ilya Shymanovich of Belarus, who clocked 26.89. Nicolo Martinenghi of Italy was third with a time of 26.90, while the Netherlands' Caspar Corbeau completed the qualifiers in the heat at fourth place. Another South African, Aimee Canny, secured a semi-final berth in the women's 200m freestyle heats. Canny was third in heat three, finishing behind Barbora Seemanova of Czech Republic in second, while Australia's Jamie Perkins was first.

Date, time of Springboks' Rugby Championship opener
After a brief break after the July internationals, the Springboks have regathered for a two-week conditioning camp in Johannesburg as they prepare for their first Rugby Championship Test against Australia. The Springboks will first face the Wallabies in Johannesburg on Saturday 16 August, with kick off at 17:10, and again a week later in Cape Town on 23 August (17:10). Rassie Erasmus said he expected a completely different challenge in the Rugby Championship to that against the Barbarians, Italy, and Georgia. 'Australia, New Zealand, and Argentina are all ranked in the top seven in the world, and if one considers that we won the Rugby Championship for the first time since 2019 last year, it is clear that this will be a completely different kettle of fish,' Erasmus commented. 'All three teams have beaten us in the last few years and they play a different style of rugby to the other opposition we have faced thus far, but we are pleased with the foundation we laid in the last few weeks and we know exactly what areas of our game we need to work on going into the Rugby Championship.' Erasmus will announce his squad for the two-match tour to New Zealand in September before making the journey Down Under, where they will face their arch-rivals at Eden Park in Auckland on 6 September, and the Sky Stadium in Wellington on 13 September respectively. The team will wrap up their campaign with Test matches against Argentina in Durban on Saturday 27 September, and in London on 4 October.
