Kottayam school welcomes student from Afghanistan
It was six-year-old Behsa Karimi who walked into the classroom and, in no time, made friends with the rest of the students.
Behsa is the eldest daughter of Mohammed Fahim Karimi, a native of Kabul, and Ellaha Sahir. Fahim, who arrived in Kottayam four years ago, is doing research in business studies at the MG University. The couple also has one younger boy named Bahar Karimi.
Sindhu K, the headmistress of the school, said that there were students of many guest workers that used to study here.
"It is for the first time a foreign student is studying in this school," she said. She also said that Behsa speaks English very well and the teachers are communicating with her in English. "Right now, we are communicating with her in English," she said.
Apart from English, Behsa speaks Afghani and Urdu very well. "Last year, seven children of guest workers had joined Class I," said Shalini K Lakshmanan, another teacher. There are a total of four teachers in the school for Class I-IV, while two for nursery classes. "The family was staying near the school and that was the main reason why the child's parents chose this school," added Shalini.
Behsa was welcomed by the teachers, led by the headmistress with flowers, as she walked into the school established in 1911, with her parents on Tuesday morning.

It took him 60 years to be able to talk about his ordeal in public. When the US dropped a uranium bomb on Hiroshima, Iida was 900 meters (yards) away from the hypocenter, at a house where his mother grew up. He was 3 years old. He remembers the intensity of the blast. It was as if he was thrown out of a building. He found himself alone underneath the debris, bleeding from shards of broken glass all over his body. 'Mommy, help!' he tried to scream, but his voice didn't come out. Eventually he was rescued by his grandfather.

Bihar Staff Selection Commission, BSSC, announces 1481 graduate-level vacancies, apply from August 18
BSSC CGL 2025: Bihar Staff Selection Commission (BSSC) has advertised 1,481 vacancies for various posts, which will be filled through the Graduate Level Combined Competitive Exam (CGL 2025). The application process for this recruitment drive will begin on August 18 and end on September 17. Eligible candidates can apply on the official website of the commission, Bihar Staff Selection Commission, BSSC, announces 1481 graduate-level vacancies(Santosh Kumar/HT photo) Eligibility criteria such as educational qualification and technical qualification are different for each post. Candidates can check the notification hosted on the official website for more details. Candidates who are at least 21 years old and not more than 37 years old on the cut-off date can apply for these vacancies. However, relaxation in the upper age limit will be provided to reserve category candidates as per rules. If the commission receives more than 40,000 applications, it will conduct an examination using objective-type questions to shortlist candidates. Based on the preliminary examination, BSSC will shortlist candidates equal to five times the number of vacancies for the mains examination. The commission will publish a separate notification for the mains examination. Candidates will be allowed to bring books – one each for the three topics – to the exam centre. BSSC said that only NCERT, BSEB and ICSE boards' textbooks will be allowed. Guide books, photocopies of books, handwritten papers, notes, electronic devices, etc. will not be allowed inside the exam hall.
