Freddo chocolate creator's daughter say he would be 'rolling in his grave' - as once 10p treats rocket to £1

Daily Mail5 days ago
The daughter of the man who invented Freddo Frog has claimed he would be 'rolling in his grave' over the current price of the chocolate treat.
Leonie Lewis's father Harry Melbourne first came up with the idea of the edible amphibian as a teenager while working for an Australian confectionary company MacRobertson's almost a decade ago.
The young Brit overheard one of his bosses talking about selling a new chocolate bar in the shape of a mouse and, unprovoked, decided to give his own thoughts.
'He said children are scared of mice, so why not a frog? Because kids go down to the lake and catch tadpoles,' Leonie told Sky News.
And just like that the cult favourite chocolate bar - which even adopted the name of Harry's 'best mate' Fred - was born.
His newfound fame came much to the delight of Harry's daughter Leonie, who would often wait for her father to come home from work with boxes of Freddos for their family to feast on.
But since his death in 2007, she has vowed to never to buy one again after prices for the bar shot up in recent years - with some being sold for as much as £1 in the UK.
'He'd roll over in his grave if he could see it now; he'd be disgusted. It was a penny chocolate,' Leonie told Sky News.
She added that he had been 'disgusted with how small it is now' and how much shops charge for it.
Leonie shares the same fury as thousands of other Freddo fans who have witnessed the price of the once-10p chocolate frog rise to as much as £1 earlier this year.
A post of the popular lunchbox snack on Reddit showed a Freddo selling for £1 at a WHSmith store in Carlisle.
Although it is still available for less in many shops, the price represents a staggering tenfold increase since the bar returned to shop shelves 20 years ago.
Lovers of the miniature amphibian sweet were quick to vent their rage online, with one saying: '£1 for a Freddo is disgusting. Daylight robbery at its finest!'
Another angered fan raged: 'Name and shame where this atrocity has occurred.'
One outraged lover of the chocolate even rounded on Chancellor Rachel Reeves over the Freddo's 'snackflation'.
'Freddo's are now a quid. Wtf is going on in this country? @RachelReevesMP, you should resign,' they wrote on X.
Freddo was launched in the UK by legendary British chocolatier Cadbury in 1973 but was withdraw in 1974.
The bar, which first originated in Australia, was later relaunched in 1994 at a price of 10p, proving to be a smash hit lunchbox treat.
The cost of the beloved bar remained the same for 11 years, until in 2005, it started to slowly increase 2p a year in price.
By 2016, the 95 calorie bar cost 25p.
However, since then, its cost has ballooned rapidly, much to the dismay of fans.
In 2017, the price rose to 30p. Five years later, in 2022, a Freddo was seen being sold for 49p at WHSmith in Liverpool.
The £1 bar in Carlisle is higher than in major retailers like Tesco, Sainsbury's or Asda, which sell the chocolate snack for 30p, 40p and 34p respectively.
But this is still more than if the cost of Freddos had only kept pace with inflation more widely, which would see them priced at a mere 19p.

Abbie Chatfield shares 'wedding song' boyfriend Adam Hyde has written about her - after sparking engagement rumours

Abbie Chatfield has again sparked engagement rumours with boyfriend Adam Hyde after sharing a song he has written for her. The musician, who goes by the stage name Keli Holiday, has dropped the new single, called Dancing 2 - and Abbie was quick to endorse it. She shared the lyrics to her Instagram Stories on Thursday, with the words seemingly inspired by the early days of the couple's romance. 'You got 28 years just to work it all out, another 28 years just to figure out what it meant to you,' the lyrics read. 'Now I'm next to you, and we're dancing too. You were dancing, yeah you were dancing. And I was dancing too.' After sharing the track, Abbie also shared a message from a fan who said they wished they'd used the song at their wedding. 'It's such a wedding song!' Abbie enthused, perhaps hinting she may play it at her own wedding. It comes after Abbie sparked engagement rumours after showing off some bling she received on her 30th birthday. The Bachelor star shared a video to Instagram in which she revealed the custom-made ring Adam gifted her for her birthday. 'So my 30th birthday and I was wondering what he is going to do for me. We were in Greece for my actual birthday so I only recently got my present but it's so cute,' she said. 'For context, he calls me bug because one day we were in bed and he said "you're like a little bug". Ever since then, [he calls me bug]. So me being buggy he got me this custom made,' Abbie explained before opening a heart-shaped box to reveal the ring. She then placed the band on her ring finger and held it up towards the camera. 'It's a bug ring. Is that not the cutest, coolest, sickest 30th birthday present? It's so weird... I thought you would all be wondering what he got me and I just wanted to show it off,' she added. Many fans flocked to the comments to question whether she was wearing the ring on her engagement finger. 'Hahahaha I did see the left hand engagement ring finger,' one person commented. 'Little do you know, you're now engaged,' another said while a third wrote: 'She did pop it on that finger.' The podcaster immediately shut down speculation, explaining she was wearing the ring on her right hand but the camera flipped the image to make it appear as though it was on her left hand. Abbie and Adam have been going from strength to strength since debuting their romance in June 2024 and she has even featured in his on-stage performances. She told Stellar Magazine that her relationship with Adam is the best she's ever had. 'It isn't like other people I've had flings with. And this is gonna sound a bit w**ky, but he's had a bigger career than me,' she said after concerns from fans that Adam is 'using her' for fame. 'I don't think he's using me for anything. He's successful in his own right. 'I think I'm cool for being with him, not the other way around.' Abbie was friends with Adam for two years before they started dating, which she said has added to the trust between them.

Most parents would be mortified if their little boy gave the middle finger to strangers. Here's why a footy star had a range of T-shirts made up when his son did it in front of thousands of fans

Jeremy McGovern's son, Huson, stole the show on Saturday afternoon, as his dad completed a lap of honour at the Optus Stadium. The Eagles legend returned to the field at the 60,000-seater stadium to bid goodbye to West Coast fans following his retirement announcement. Alongside fellow 2018 premiership hero Dom Sheed, McGovern lapped up the applause from the crowd at half-time of his side's defeat by Adelaide. He was joined on the field by members of his family, including his young son, Hudson, who upstaged his dad after he cheekily flipped his middle finger up at spectators inside the Optus. And the Eagles hero and Hudson are now launching a new line of clothing, all in aid of charity. The pair have printed a now viral photo of Hudson flipping the bird at Eagles fans during his dad's lap of honour onto a suite of T-shirts, which are being called the 'Give 'em the bird tees'. View this post on Instagram A post shared by StreetX™ (@streetx) McGovern and Hudson are set to donate all the profits from the campaign to charity. They have not chosen the charity as yet, but added that it will be decided by fans. The pair announced the brilliant move with a hilarious video on Instagram. In the clip, which was published on Streetx's Instagram feed, the former Eagles defender is seen standing behind his son, before introducing the campaign. Hilariously, Hudson was seen cutting a straight face, looking directly down the camera, as he raised both his middle fingers. 'G'day guys, we're down here at Streetx with the 'Give 'em the bird tee',' McGovern said. 'If you're a bad boy, stick your hands in your pockets and come grab one. They're online now. 'If you're a real, real bad boy, dig deep because everything is going to charity.' Their chosen charity has not yet been revealed yet, with Streetx revealing that fans have just 72 hours to snap up their own shirt. It comes after their star man, Harley Reid, was slapped with a $1,000 fine earlier this year, after he flipped the bird to Brisbane fans following the Eagles' defeat by the Lions at The Gabba in Round Two. Even the West Coast's No 1 draft pick joined in the comments on a TikTok of the viral clip, writing: 'Respect.' 'Suspended for two games,' another fan joked, while another added: '$2,000 fine by the AFL,' another added. 'More like Harley Reid Jr,' another joked, while one said: 'Sign him up now.' Eagles legend McGovern announced his retirement back in June due to medical reasons. Having had time to reflect on the decision, the 33-year-old premiership legend said he was 'at peace with the call'. 'The game demands a lot from players and, in this instance, it is unlucky for me but at the same time, there's a beauty to it that it can be taken away at any time,' he explained. 'I hope everyone cherishes it and understands what our players go through every time they run out on that footy field. It's sad not getting the fairytale, but I'm at peace with it.

Bec Judd complains she's become a 'pin cushion' as she shares her latest cosmetic procedure after finally admitting she's had some tweaks

Bec Judd has taken to social media to announce she has undergone another cosmetic procedure. The 42-year-old WAG was not specific about her treatment, but it appears it may have involved some sort of injections in her face. Posting to her stories on Thursday, Bec, wearing white-rimmed cat-eye sunglasses, shared a snap in which she could be seen twisting her mouth in a comic grimace. 'Pin cushion,' she said in the caption. 'She's going to look amazing in two weeks ha, ha,' she joked. Bec tagged aesthetic nurse Claire McGuinness, who operates in Melbourne 's Prahran and offers a range of treatments, including LED light therapy, microneedling and radiofrequency treatments. It comes after Bec recently opened up about having cosmetic procedures done after years of denying she has had any work. Bec told Stellar magazine that she wants to be 'completely transparent' as she discusses beauty in her new podcast, called Vain-ish, alongside best friend Jess Roberts. 'I'm 42, and I don't have a line on my face. I'm telling you it's not because I get eight hours' sleep a night, all right?' she confessed. She went on to say that 2025 is the year we 'stop gaslighting' women by lying about the procedures we've had done. 'You get to a certain age where it's like, come on, let's be a bit more honest. This is the year where we stop bullsh***ing everyone and we fess up,' she added. In the first episode of her podcast, Bec opened up about her own personal journey with cosmetic surgeries and enhancements, admitting to trying treatments such as the Kim Kardashian-approved salmon sperm facial. 'So I've had this treatment twice with my injector Claire McGuinness for, you know, thinning skin around the eyes,' she revealed. Bec added that it was a 'next generation' cosmetic enhancement, coining it as a 'biostimulatory injectable'. For years, the Jaggad founder has denied having any plastic surgery or cosmetic procedures done, instead pointing to healthy living and expensive skincare as her saving grace. However, more recently, Bec has been incrementally dropping more hints about the non-invasive procedures she uses to maintain her age-defying visage. In June, Bec paid a visit to aesthetic nurse and former clinical specialist Claire, who offers a 'conservative approach to facial rejuvenation' using radio frequency microneedling, LED therapies, and injectables. 'Give me Kris Jenner's neck without the surgery,' Bec captioned a snapshot of her neck after what appears to be an 'Exion' treatment. The media personality showed off three rows of distinct red and swollen bumps peppered across her neck after her appointment. Exion, a type of radio-frequency microneedling, creates controlled micro-injuries and applies heat to the skin, which can cause temporary redness, swelling, and bumps as the skin responds and repairs itself.
