Sources: Jrue Holiday 'is a name to monitor' for the Lakers

USA Today6 days ago
The Los Angeles Lakers took another step forward toward possibly fielding a championship-caliber team this coming season by snagging veteran guard Marcus Smart on Saturday. Smart, who won the Defensive Player of the Year award in 2022, agreed to a buyout of his contract with the Washington Wizards and quickly agreed to join the Lakers on a two-year, $11 million deal that he can officially sign once he clears waivers.
But one cannot safely assume the Lakers are done making moves this summer. They could still use a true 3-and-D guard or wing, and as great a defender Smart has been, he's not a 3-and-D player, as he's always been an anemic 3-point shooter.
Per Grant Afseth of FastbreakJournal.com, the Portland Trail Blazers' Jrue Holiday, another veteran guard known for his defense, "is a name to monitor" as far as L.A. is concerned.
"Multiple sources recently told FastbreakJournal.com that Holiday is a name to monitor, particularly as a potential target for the Los Angeles Lakers," Afseth wrote.
"That's not to say active conversations are taking place, but his name continues to surface in NBA circles as the team evaluates options to add more talent around LeBron James and Luka Doncic. Other teams are monitoring the situation, though the Lakers are widely viewed as one of the most natural fits if Portland explores a deal."
Holiday has been named to one of the NBA's All-Defensive teams six times in 16 seasons, and he's an absolute menace as far as locking up opponents on the perimeter. Unlike Smart, he's a dependable 3-point shooter — he has a career mark of 37% from that distance, as well as career averages of 15.8 points and 6.2 assists a game, and he has won two championships with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Boston Celtics.
But landing him would be difficult for Los Angeles. He will make $32.4 million this coming season, which would make him expensive, and he has three years left on his contract, which includes a player option for the 2027-28 season. Holiday recently turned 35 years of age, so one has to question whether it would be wise for L.A. to take on that type of contract for a player who could bring diminishing returns.
Holiday happens to originally be from the San Fernando Valley, and he played his lone season of college basketball at the University of California, Los Angeles. The Celtics traded him to Portland earlier this month as they look to trim salary.

Nick Bosa has always set an example, but now he's letting 49ers' young DL hear it as well

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Nick Bosa seems like the kind of guy who thinks over things, maybe even has an inner debate with himself, before speaking up. It's worked for the 49ers defensive end, who is now entering Year 7 as a two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year and one of the trusted playmakers and leaders on a team looking to bounce back from a 6-11 season. Advertisement But Bosa has told himself that he needs to make a change. 'I definitely need to take a leadership role, for sure,' he said. 'It's one thing to come in and work on my job and get better, which is all I've ever really worried about. And then it's another thing to try and bring everybody along with you. 'So it's definitely something that I'm thinking about and something I want to do.' One can see Bosa at training camp practices this past week, talking to younger players between snaps. First-round pick Mykel Williams not only gets to watch and follow Bosa in drills, but also gets feedback when he is done. 'I mean it's just friendly banter, but some of it is constructive criticism,' Bosa said. 'Obviously, it's fun to watch a young guy just go through the growing pains that I went through — and anything that I see I'm going to help them with.' Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh said Bosa's leading by example already speaks volumes. 'He doesn't really need to talk,' Saleh said. 'If I'm a young rookie walking into a building and I want to know what it's supposed to look like day in and day out to prepare myself, to prepare my mind, my body to be one of the best players in football, I just go watch him. Watch how he prepares, watch how he takes care of his body, watch how he works out, rehabs, whatever he's doing. 'It is pedal to the metal and he's rolling. He doesn't have to say a word.' But Saleh said that Bosa is speaking up more this camp, and teammates are appreciating the extra tip here and there. Coach Kyle Shanahan agreed that Bosa is stepping out of his comfort zone a little more. 'He doesn't vary out of his personality very much,' Shanahan said. 'But I do think he talks to those guys more, and he knows he can help guys and when he sees spots that he can help guys with, he doesn't hesitate.' Advertisement Bosa has been impressed with Williams, who can set the edge or rush the passer from the outside, and also bounce inside. 'Mykel's looked really good,' Bosa said. 'He is very physical and he has a big reach, so he just needs to hone in obviously on his aiming points and trusting the system.' 49ers left tackle Trent Williams thinks the rookie has great resources in defensive line coach Kris Kocurek and Bosa. 'I think he has a chance to be dominant,' Trent Williams said. 'He has the best coach in the league coaching him. Gets to learn from some of the best, from obviously Nick. I'm happy to see how he turns out. I think he has all the tools to be an All-Pro. 'Obviously, going against Nick, we feed off each other so much. And he makes me better. I like to feel like I make him better. He keeps me engaged. He keeps me working on myself, because nobody likes to get embarrassed — and not in a mean way, but yeah, he would embarrass me if I let him.' Williams just turned 37 and is thankful that he keeps putting off retirement talk as long as he holds up against Bosa in practice. 'It's always good going against Nick, one of my better friends on the team, but (also) one of the best players in the league, and being able to size yourself up against him,' Williams said. 'Especially me going into (Year) 16 and not knowing where that cliff is. When I get to go against Nick, it kind gives me a good measuring stick.' Bosa is looking forward to the pads going on for the first time Monday, and helping some of the young defensive linemen make a name for themselves. 'I think we have a lot of talent,' he said. 'I think when you look out on the field, you see NFL bodies out there that look impressive, which is a good thing. Obviously, we're young, but I think, I mean, just because nobody knows them now, they play a good couple games, then the whole world knows them, so it'll be exciting.' Advertisement Bosa, Trent Williams and RB Christian McCaffrey were given veteran rest days on Sunday. That was the plan with tight end George Kittle as well, but he opted to partake as a helmeted cheerleader/assistant coach/choreographer. Later on Sunday, third-year DL Tarron Jackson was carted off the practice field on a stretcher. Shanahan said after practice that Jackson was conscious and communicating and had feeling in his extremities. He was sent to Stanford Hospital to get further testing. … Shanahan said WR Jauan Jennings left practice early with a calf issue. … Cornerback Renardo Green and WR Jacob Cowing will be out 2-3 weeks with hamstring injuries, Shanahan said. … The 49ers activated WR Ricky Pearsall (hamstring) off the PUP list and he returned to practice atop the team's depth chart, along with Jennings. 'I think he got like eight reps today, but we'll see how he did with recovery and stuff,' Shanahan said. 'But I didn't hear any complaints and it was a good first day back.' … This kicker battle between Jake Moody and Greg Joseph is legit but I'm still not charting kicks in July. Moody did miss one from 50-plus yards out, while Joseph nailed his from that distance. (Photo of Bosa and Mykel Williams: D. Ross Cameron / Imagn Images)

The Mavericks Currently Have 4 Former Lakers Players And 3 Former Coaches

The Mavericks Currently Have 4 Former Lakers Players And 3 Former Coaches originally appeared on Fadeaway World. The Dallas Mavericks have made some significant changes to their roster over the past few months. Dating back to the trade deadline and the acquisition of Anthony Davis and Max Christie from the Los Angeles Lakers, the Mavs have seemingly continued the trend of adding former Lakers personnel to their team. The recent addition of former Lakers head coach Frank Vogel to Jason Kidd's coaching staff was met with favorable views. Additionally, the Mavs also signed a former Lakers skills coach, Phil Handy, to their team. With Handy's addition, the tally for former Lakers on this Dallas team has only increased, creating an interesting atmosphere within the franchise. Among the players on the roster, Anthony Davis, D'Angelo Russell, Max Christie, and Maxwell Lewis form the core of ex-Lakers players. Meanwhile, Jason Kidd, who was an assistant coach under Frank Vogel on the Lakers, has added two of his former colleagues to his staff. The outlook for the Mavericks next season is fascinating, to say the least. Considering the kind of success the majority of the former Lakers' personnel had in the 2020 NBA Bubble, it is safe to say that this camaraderie could be of benefit to Dallas, especially in light of their potential. With Davis leading the side in the expected absence of Kyrie Irving due to injury, the Mavericks will be a competitive side in the West. Should he remain healthy, the big man remains one of the most talented players in the NBA. Coming off a season of averaging 24.7 points, 11.6 rebounds, and 2.2 blocks per game, the 32-year-old will have to embrace the role of being the team's anchor next season. The addition of Russell in free agency has given the team some flexibility on the playmaking front. Last season, the guard notched an average of 12.6 points and 5.1 assists. After being traded from the Purple and Gold, Russell is set to be reunited with his former teammates in Dallas, and the pick-and-roll with him and Davis will be a sight to see for Mavs fans. The development of players such as Max Christie and Maxwell Lewis will also be promising. Although Lewis received limited playing time last season, Christie emerged as a solid rotational player due to his two-way potential. While emerging as a talented wing defender, Christie also showed offensive growth. He averaged 11.2 points and 4.2 rebounds per game on 36.4% shooting from three-point range during his time with the Mavs last season. Apart from the former Lakers' players on the roster, the Mavs also possess incredible talent of their own. With the likes of Klay Thompson, Daniel Gafford, Dereck Lively, and PJ Washington on the side, the Mavericks also boast the presence of a future superstar in Cooper Flagg, their rookie this season. With several solid pieces in place, the Mavs will look to make a rise through the Western Conference story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Jul 10, 2025, where it first appeared.

LeBron James Reportedly Curious About Joining Mavericks, Knicks Not Completely Ruled Out

LeBron James Reportedly Curious About Joining Mavericks, Knicks Not Completely Ruled Out originally appeared on Fadeaway World. Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James has been one of the major names mentioned in trade rumors this offseason. Although he was linked to several teams, James remains with the Lakers. However, NBA insider Marc Stein recently reported the 40-year-old's interest in playing for the Dallas Mavericks. He wrote: "I believe that James does have some genuine curiosity about playing in Dallas. Bear in mind that he is extremely settled off the floor in Los Angeles. It has been his family's primary home base for the past seven years, and he is building a new home in Beverly Hills. To play elsewhere at this stage of his life and career could well require a landing spot that can provide a special level of comfort to take him away from all that." Having been in the league for over 20 seasons, James has a solid network of connections featuring players and coaches. In this regard, the Mavs are particularly intriguing, as they feature several former Lakers on their roster and coaching staff. "The Mavericks would seem to be uniquely suited to offer that with so many people in Dallas he already knows well," Stein added."From general manager Nico Harrison and coach Jason Kidd to former teammates Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving." The notion of James joining his former teammates on the Mavericks is intriguing. When considering Kyrie Irving's delayed return from injury, James would make for a tremendous replacement, slotting in next to Anthony Davis and Cooper Flagg. After Irving's return, the Mavs would undoubtedly be viewed as title contenders. Since opting in to his $52.6 million contract, James has become an extremely difficult player to acquire. Because of this, the Mavs have only shown interest if the forward is bought out by the Lakers. Along with Dallas, Stein remained optimistic about a future in which the Lakers' superstar joins the New York Knicks. Although the Knicks have withdrawn interest at this stage, Stein stated, "I believe that LeBron James' well-chronicled fondness for playing at Madison Square Garden makes it unwise to say he'll never be a Knick." Although he acknowledged the challenges with the move, highlighting James' relationships with Knicks president Leon Rose and vice-president William Wesley, he reiterated, "I'm just saying: I will never rule out the possibility of No. 23 becoming a Knick someday. Because he is said to love The Garden that much.' Stein's forecast appears rooted in James' personal preferences. However, current market interest doesn't seem to align with those desires. With trade buzz cooling down, it appears the superstar will remain with the Purple and Gold for the foreseeable future. This isn't a bad thing in light of the new additions the team has made to improve its roster depth. While James could still request a trade, a move before the 2026 deadline seems more likely than during this story was originally reported by Fadeaway World on Jul 27, 2025, where it first appeared.
