Bard Music Festival: An Innovator in Exile
The theremin was the most eye-catching element in the first concert of this festival, devoted to the Czech composer Bohuslav Martinu. The instrument was invented in 1920 and is played by manipulating an electromagnetic field with magician-like gestures, its hollow keening notes seemingly plucked from the air. On Friday at the Fisher Center in Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y., it joined a cast of traditional instruments — oboe, piano, strings — in Martinu's 'Fantasia' from 1944, creating an unexpectedly moving amalgam of instrumental colors. The work captures something of the essence of this artist, who embraced both the turbulence and the technological marvels of the 20th century, and who delighted in unusual groupings of instruments that work their charm as much through choreography as sound.
This year marks both Botstein's 50th year as president of Bard College and the 35th iteration of the festival, which he has built into a summer institution: two weekends of concerts, panel discussions, and lectures exploring the life and work of a single composer, accompanied by a scholarly volume of essays. The subject is as likely to be a household name as an overlooked figure, but the program always stretches beyond familiar repertoire. That mix of intellectual ambition and freedom from commercial pressures is rare in music-making in the United States, and it flourishes here. Judging by Friday's stimulating opener, this year's exploration of Martinu, a restless exile equally fluent in Czech folk song, Neo-Classicism and the hum of the modern world, invites audiences to discover one of the most distinct and delightful voices of his time.
Upcoming programs include a concert performance of 'Julietta,' Martinu's surreal dream opera, and works by composers from his ambit, among them his student and erstwhile romantic interest, Vitezslava Kapralova. With a catalog of more than 400 works, including six symphonies and 15 operas to choose from, the Bard could offer only a slice of his output.
Martinu was born in 1890 in a clock tower in the small Bohemian town of Policka, where his father was the fire watcher. Ninety-nine steps above ground, the family lived in a single square room with a commanding view of the countryside, a vantage point that may explain the composer's signature blend of pastoral idyll with cool detachment. The lilting, off-kilter rhythms of nearby Moravia filtered into his music long after he traded his homeland for a life of exile.

Kaytranada & Justice Are Going on an Arena Tour This Fall: Here Are the Dates
Kaytranada and Justice are going on a co-headlining North American arena tour this fall. The 13-show run will launch on Oct. 17 in Vancouver, B.C., then hits arenas across the U.S. until it wraps in Miami, Fla., on Nov. 16. The run includes one currently unannounced show that's blurred out on the poster and is happening between an Oct. 22 in Oakland and an Oct. 28 show in San Diego. (One is tempted to speculate that this show will be in Los Angeles.) More from Billboard K-pop Rules as Netflix's 'KPop Demon Hunters' Soundtrack Holds ARIA No. 1 Max McNown Expands 'Night Diving' With 11 New Songs: Stream It Now Flume Teams With Emma Louise for New Collaborative Album, 'DUMB' The co-headlining run follows Kaytranada's remix of Justice's 'Neverender' that was released last October. The Tame Impala collab from the duo's 2024 album Hyperdrama won the Grammy for best dance/electronic recording and gave Justice its first ever radio No. 1 in February. On July 16, Justice also released a remix package of 'Mannequin Love,' also from Hyperdrama, with fresh edits by The Dare, Braxe & Falcon and Hudson Mohawke. This autumn tour falls into the timeline Justice told Billboard about in March, when the duo's Gaspard Augé said the French duo would likely tour the lauded show debuted at Coachella 2024 this December. Following this, added Xavier de Rosnay, they'll likely 'pick a date and then dismantle everything' related to the live production 'so that there can't even be the temptation of saying yes to anything else.' Both artists also have plenty of solo tour dates on the calendar ahead of this fall run. Kaytranada's upcoming schedule including standalone shows and festival sets at events including HARD Summer and Breakaway Carolina and Justice's summer schedule including festivals primarily in Europe and Australia. Tickets for the run go on sale on Friday, July 25. Watch a pre-fame Sabrina Carpenter, at age 12, cover Ozzy Osbourne's iconic anthem Crazy Train
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission. Sabrina Carpenter is kinda a big deal. A former Disney TV star, the 26-year-old Quakertown, Pennsylvania singer released her debut album Eyes Wide Open back in 2015 to little fanfare, but her most recent collection, 2024's Short n' Sweet, topped the national charts in 18 countries, spawned three UK number one singles, has already sold more than three million copies in the US alone, and catapulted the singer into stadiums worldwide. But before she got her first big break, landing a role as a character called Maya Hart on Disney Channel show Girl meets World, Carpenter was given a thorough education in old school rock and metal - Queen, The Beatles, Rush, Guns N' Roses, Ozzy Osbourne and more - by her father David. "The Trees is the longest song I've ever heard," she joked to Rolling Stone earlier this year about Rush's classic single from 1978's Hemispheres album. "I heard it my whole childhood."Rather sweetly, visual proof of Carpenter's pre-fame fondness for classic rock exists online, in the form of a rather fine cover of Ozzy Osbourne's signature anthem Crazy Train recorded in collaboration with an uncredited guitarist, bassist and drummer back in 2011, when she was 12-years-old. And while it's highly unlikely that, unlike Ozzy, the 12-year-old Carpenter could fully identify with the idea of "going off the rails", you'd have to have a heart of stone not to appreciate her fully-committed efforts to channel the Prince Of Darkness when tackling the most famous on his 1980 solo debut, Blizzard Of Ozz. All aboooooooard! "[Blizzard of Ozz bassist] Bob Daisley did a lot of the lyrics on that," Ozzy told this writer in 2018. "I probably did 'I'm going off the rails like a crazy train', and 'Crazy, but that's how it goes', but then I'd get stuck and he'd help me. And Randy [Rhoads] was brilliant, he was the first guy in my life who was like, 'Try doing this here, and this here…' When we did Crazy Train I knew we had something good. It was a magical time." Earlier this week, on July 30, Osbourne was buried in England, following an emotional stop in his hometown, Birmingham, where thousands of fans turned out to pay their respects to the legendary Black Sabbath frontman, following his death on July 22. Osbourne co-founded Black Sabbath in 1968 and made eight albums with the Godfathers of Metal before being dismissed from the pioneering band in 1979, due to what was perceived by his bandmates to be excessive substance invaluable encouragement and assistance from his manager/wife Sharon, Osbourne then launched a hugely successful solo career, beginning with Blizzard of Ozz. Ozzy Osbourne: No Escape From Now , a feature-length documentary focussing on the final years, is currently in production. The film is being directed by BAFTA Award winner Tania Alexander of London-based Broadcasting & media production company Echo Velvet. As well as interviews with Osbourne and his family, No Escape From Now will feature interviews and insights from Ozzy's Black Sabbath bandmate Tony Iommi, Duff McKagan (Guns N' Roses), Robert Trujillo (Metallica), Billy Idol, Maynard James Keenan (Tool), Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers), guitarist Zakk Wylde and producer Andrew Watt.
