Suspects in New York crypto kidnapping case granted bail
New York Supreme Criminal Court Judge Gregory Carro set bail at $1 million each for John Woeltz, 37, and William Duplessie, 33, who have been in custody since their arrest in May.
Woeltz and Duplessie pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including kidnapping, assault and coercion.
The 28-year-old victim, reportedly an Italian cryptocurrency trader, arrived in New York City from Italy in early May. He was abducted on May 6, police told CNN. It's not clear whether the victim knew the men who kidnapped him.
Prosecutors said the unnamed victim was tortured for days, threatened with death and at one point dangled over a railing unless he revealed his Bitcoin password. When he refused, he was beaten, shocked with electric wires, and struck in the head with a firearm, they said.
The accused also allegedly bound the man's wrists and threatened to kill his family, according to the Manhattan District Attorney.
In late May, the victim escaped the apartment where he was allegedly being held after agreeing to provide his password, which was stored on his laptop in another room, prosecutors said. When one of the suspects turned his back, the victim fled the apartment and sought help from a traffic officer, police said.
He was taken to a hospital and treated for injuries that prosecutor Michael Mattson said were consistent with his descriptions of being bound and assaulted, the Associated Press reported.
Woeltz, a Kentucky native and cryptocurrency investor, was arrested after the victim's escape. Duplessie, a Miami resident, turned himself in the following week.
A search of the townhouse turned up a trove of evidence, Mattson said, including cocaine, a saw, chicken wire, body armor and night vision goggles, ammunition, and polaroid photos of the victim with a gun pointed to his head, the AP reported.
Inmate records show that, as of Wednesday evening, both men are still in custody. Their next court appearance will be scheduled for October 15.

British man charged with attempting to drown daughter-in-law during US holiday
A British man has been charged by US police with the attempted murder of his daughter-in-law after allegedly trying to drown her in a swimming pool while on holiday, local authorities said. The sheriff said in a statement: 'It's great that Polk County draws visitors from all across the world, but we expect vacationers to behave while they visit with us, just as we expect our lifelong residents to do the same. 'Because Mr Gibbon couldn't control his anger, he may find himself spending a lot more time in Florida than he had anticipated.'

Sean ‘Diddy' Combs wants to relaunch his music career at Madison Square Garden, his attorney says
Disgraced rapper Sean 'Diddy' Combs is plotting a major career comeback following his not guilty verdict last month, according to his attorneys. 'He's going to be back at Madison Square Garden,' his lead attorney, Marc Agnifilo, told CBS News' Jericka Duncan in his first network interview since Combs' highly publicized trial in New York. Duncan asked the attorney whether the mogul had discussed a return to music, despite facing a jail term of 20 years. 'Honestly, he has not. But one thing he said was that he was going to be back in Madison Square Garden. He said, 'I'm going to be back in Madison Square Garden.'' 'Doing what?' Duncan asks. Agnifilo responds, 'I guess being on stage, and I said, 'I'll be there.'' A grand jury acquitted Combs of the two most serious charges against him, sex trafficking and racketeering conspiracy, last month, which surrounded allegations that he coerced two long-term girlfriends into drug-fueled 'freak-offs' with hired male escorts. However, Combs was found guilty of two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution, a lesser charge that carries a maximum of 10 years in prison for each conviction. Despite facing jail, Agnifilo said the singer was determined to reinstate himself in society and reclaim his musical empire. 'He wants people to know that he has reflected on the blessings that he's been given, the imperfections that I think he sees in himself. I think he wants to get out of jail and reestablish a loving present relationship with all of his seven children. He wants to take care of his mother.' When talking about his return to music, he said, 'I think he is someone who is always going to strive to do something exceptional and probably demanding and challenging.' Agnifilo stressed that Comb's main priorities now were to be reunited with his children and his mother. In a separate interview, Nicole Westmoreland, another attorney working for Combs' defense team, told CNN that 'conversations' had taken place with Trump officials about the possibility of clemency. 'It's my understanding that we've reached out and had conversations in reference to a pardon,' Westmoreland told CNN. When asked previously, the president seemed to consider that a pardon for Combs may be possible, though recent remarks suggested otherwise. 'He was essentially sort of half-innocent, I don't know what, he's still in jail or something,' President Trump said when asked about the Combs last week. 'He's celebrating a victory, but I guess it wasn't as good a victory. Probably, ugh, you know, I was very friendly with him, I got along with him – great. He seemed like a nice guy. I didn't know him well.' 'But when I ran for office, he was very hostile.' Trump said that Combs's comments at the time had 'clouded his judgment' and made the decision more difficult to make.
