Delta co-pilot reportedly arrested on plane for child sexual abuse materials

The Guardian3 days ago
A co-pilot with Delta Air Lines was reportedly arrested by federal agents at San Francisco international airport over the weekend on charges related to child sexual abuse materials, according to a senior official with the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and multiple media reports.
The arrest reportedly took place shortly after the flight – Delta Flight 2809 from Minnesota – landed at the California airport at about 9.35pm on Saturday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported.
Several passengers who were on the plane told various media outlets that about 10 law enforcement officers, including agents from Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), boarded the plane before passengers were let off. The agents reportedly arrested and removed one of the co-pilots from the plane.
One passenger told the Chronicle that 'a group of people with badges, guns, and different agency vests/markings were pushing their way up through the aisle to the cockpit'.
She said the officers 'stormed the cockpit, cuffed the co-pilot, arrested him, walked him down the aisle, and ushered him off the plane through the cabin doors located between first [class] and coach' class.
The same witness said that a second group of officers returned to the aircraft shortly after to retrieve the co-pilot's belongings.
The pilot has not yet been publicly identified.
In a statement to the Guardian on Monday, a senior DHS official confirmed that HSI agents had arrested the pilot in question on charges pertaining to child sexual abuse materials.
A DHS spokesperson also told the Chronicle on Sunday that the agency assisted local authorities in executing an arrest warrant.
Fox News national correspondent Bill Melugin on Sunday cited a senior federal source who said that the co-pilot had been taken into custody by HSI on allegations involving child sexual abuse materials.
In a statement on Monday afternoon, Delta Air Lines said: 'Delta has zero tolerance for unlawful conduct and will fully cooperate with law enforcement. We are appalled by reports of the charges related to the arrest and the individual in question has been suspended pending an investigation.'
Another passenger who was on the plane spoke with the travel outlet View from the Wing. They said that the officers 'stormed to the front' of the aircraft and 'grabbed/arrested' the co-pilot.
The passenger added that the remaining pilot appeared to have 'no idea what just happened'.
The outlet also published video footage showing agents leaving the cockpit.

Man who burned a Virginia city councilman intended to kill him, police say

Police say a man who doused a Virginia city councilman in gasoline and set him on fire told investigators he wanted the attack to be fatal, according to charging documents available Thursday. Officials say the motive appears personal and unrelated to Lee Vogler's work as a public official. After Wednesday's attack, the 38-year-old father of two was flown by medical helicopter to a burn unit in North Carolina. The hospital hasn't provided an update on his condition. According to police, witnesses and Vogler himself, Shotsie Michael Buck-Hayes, 29, poured gasoline on the councilman after barging into his workplace at a local magazine. Buck-Hayes chased Vogler outside and ignited the gas, later telling police he intended for the flames to kill him, according to the documents. Buck-Hayes has since been charged with attempted first-degree murder and aggravated malicious wounding. Edward Lavado, an attorney representing him, declined to comment to The Associated Press on Thursday. At the scene, Vogler was able to tell multiple witnesses that Buck-Hayes had burned him, according to the charging documents. The complaint doesn't give details on how Buck-Hayes was taken into custody. The records were first reported by the Danville Register and Bee. Vogler has served on the Danville City Council for more than a decade and is known as a fixture of the small city near the Virginia-North Carolina state line, about 140 miles (230 kilometers) north of Charlotte. The police documents list a Danville address for Buck-Hayes as well. Andrew Scott Brooks, editor and publisher of Showcase Magazine, says the attacker forced his way into the office despite the door being locked and went straight for Vogler. 'The next thing, Lee is running through the office covered in gasoline, yelling for our officemate to call 911,' Brooks said Wednesday. Buck-Hayes was being held without bail in the Danville City Jail, records show.

Semi truck driver takes cops on wild wrong-way chase before crashing into garden

Watch as a police chase a stolen semi truck cab along Dallas Highway before the vehicle crashes into a garden. Dashcam footage released by Cobb County Police Department on Tuesday (29 July) shows the bright green cab driving recklessly on 24 June, narrowly missing several cars as it weaved through lanes. A police officer had noticed the erratic driving and attempted to pull the vehicle over for a traffic stop, before the driver decided to flee. The vehicle can then be seen driving over the pavement before crashing through a fence and almost into the side of a property. Police confirmed that the truck was stolen and the driver was taken into custody at the scene.

Mother offers new courtroom excuse over death of baby boy with sad eyes

The mother and grandfather of a dead baby boy are attempting to avoid possible criminal responsibility over his death by citing mental health problems. Wendy Pamela Jean Bailey, 23, and her father, John Elton Bailey, pleaded not guilty to domestic violence, abuse of a corpse and aggravated child abuse, claiming 'mental disease or defect'. They were charged after human remains believed to be Bailey's one-year-old son Kahleb Collins were discovered on the family's Alabama property in May. Investigators realized Kahleb was missing after his father, Steven Collins, and his two–year–old sister, Ryleigh, were killed in a car accident in Fayette County on December 8. Bailey was also in the car accident and sustained injuries that landed her in hospital, prompting the police to ask questions about her son's whereabouts. They eventually determined that the baby had last been seen on September 9. Bailey was arrested and charged in connection to her son's death on December 30 last year. Human remains believed to be Kahleb's were found near a burn pile on the family's property in Fayette, according to investigators who have yet to formally provide a positive identification. The baby had been restrained with zip ties at least twice and suspended from the ceiling, according to court documents. A grand jury indictment dated March 19 listed six charges against Bailey, including aggravated child abuse, four counts of first degree domestic violence assault and abuse of corpse. According to the indictment Bailey, 'did torture, willfully abuse, cruelly beat, or otherwise maltreat the said KRC [Khaleb] by acts taking place on more than two occasions'. The grand jury filings detailed how Bailey allegedly 'did cause serious physical injury' by binding or tying Kahleb with zip ties or ligatures to a chair or other object. Kahleb was restrained or suspended from a ceiling, according to the court documents. Kahleb's father allegedly sent pictures to Bailey of their son hanging from a rope with blood on his body, as well as a photo of him lying on the floor with extreme bruising, followed by the messages, 'He want [sic] move,' and 'Im [sic] so sorry,' according to court records obtained by WBRC. Collins then sent a message stating, 'He moving' to which Ms. Bailey responded, 'He just looks wore out and tried [sic] and hurt hopefully that's all,' according to court records. Kahleb's body was placed in a bag and stored outside prior to disposal, according to court documents. Bailey also allegedly told investigators that Collins sent her a text message saying he was going to kill their son. The mother's domestic violence and child abuse charges stem from incidents in July 2024. The abuse of the corpse allegedly happened on September 29, weeks after Kahleb's last confirmed sighting on September 4, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. 'This is a heartbreaking outcome, and our thoughts and prayers are with all those who loved Kahleb,' Sheriff Byron Yerby of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office said. 'While this discovery brings a measure of closure, it is also a solemn reminder of the responsibility we all share in protecting our children. We are committed to continuing the pursuit of justice in this case.'
