Imelda Staunton and John Lithgow win at Olivier Awards
Harry Potter and The Crown star Dame Imelda, 69, took home her latest Olivier on Sunday, this time for best actress in a musical for the London revival of classic musical Hello, Dolly!, about a middle-aged widow trying to marry a millionaire.
The biggest winners of the 2025 Olivier Awards were the musical version of The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, a revival of Fiddler On The Roof, and Giant, about children's author Roald Dahl grappling with whether to make a public apology for an article deemed antisemitic.
They earned three awards each, with Giant winning best new play, best actor for Lithgow, who plays Dahl, and best actor in a supporting role for English actor Elliot Levey.
On stage, the 79-year-old Conclave star told the audience that he wanted to 'assure you that the special relationship is still firmly intact', between the UK and the US, after President Donald Trump imposed tariffs on British exports.
Lithgow also said that 'it's not always easy to welcome an American into your midst, and at this particular moment, it's probably a little more complicated than usual'.
Backstage, he told the PA news agency that 'hopefully, we (the US) are at the beginning of a period of restoration and reparation' citing Democratic senator Cory Booker's 25-hour Senate speech urging a rejection of Mr Trump's agenda.
Lithgow added that he did have hope, despite the 'complete disaster of this administration'.
The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, a reimagining of the original movie in which Hollywood actor Brad Pitt ages backwards, won best new musical, a best actor musical award for Lark Rise To Candleford actor John Dagleish, and outstanding musical contribution award.
Best actress went to Mrs Harris Goes To Paris star Lesley Manville, for Greek tragedy Oedipus at the Wyndham's Theatre in London, while Emma star Romola Garai beat herself to win best actress in a supporting role for Annie Ernaux memoir The Years.
Manville said she felt 'emotional', because it was something she 'felt very strongly about being' in.
Other winners included Bad Education star and Strictly Come Dancing finalist Layton Williams, for his role in musical parody Titanique, which also took the Noel Coward Award for best new entertainment or comedy play.
Dame Imelda's first Olivier award came in 1985, for her supporting roles in A Chorus Of Disapproval and The Corn Is Green, and was followed by an award for Into The Woods in 1991.
In 2013, she won the best actress in a musical award for her role in Sweeney Todd, and in 2016 she won in the same category for her role as Mama Rose in Gypsy.
The annual event, which celebrates theatrical productions, was co-hosted by British singer Beverley Knight and Pose star Billy Porter at the Royal Albert Hall in London.

HBO's HARRY POTTER Series Reveals First Look at the Weasley Family with New Cast Announcement — GeekTyrant
The Weasleys are officially stepping into the spotlight in HBO's upcoming Harry Potter series remake, and the magical family is already looking pretty great. While we've seen a steady stream of casting news for Hogwarts students, the red-headed wizarding clan is now starting to take shape, and we have a first look. We already knew that Alastair Stout would be playing Ron Weasley, Harry's loyal best friend, and Katherine Parkinson would take on the role of Molly Weasley, the loving matriarch. Now HBO has unveiled the young actors playing four more of Ron's siblings. Stepping into the roles of the mischievous twins Fred and George are real-life brothers Tristan and Gabriel Harland, while Ruari Spooner has been cast as the rule-abiding Percy Weasley. The youngest sibling, Ginny, the only daughter in the family, will be played by Gracie Cochrane. HBO revealed the cast with a fun selfie featuring the four newcomers alongside Stout, shared on Instagram. The Weasley family plays a major role in the Harry Potter universe, and since HBO is aiming for a more faithful adaptation of J.K. Rowling 's books, their presence will be even more significant. These newly announced characters all appear in the first book, but there are still a few Weasleys left to cast. Arthur Weasley, the quirky and loveable patriarch, hasn't been revealed yet, but since he becomes a major player starting with the second book, he'll need to be cast soon, likely before production begins on Season 2. There's also Charlie Weasley, who might at least get a name-drop this season. In the book, Charlie plays a part in helping smuggle the baby dragon Norbert out of Hogwarts, a scene the films trimmed down, but one that the series now has time to explore more fully. Charlie doesn't physically appear until the fourth book, so his casting could wait unless HBO wants to show photos of him in the Weasley household. That same question goes for Bill Weasley, who becomes a bigger part of the story beginning in Goblet of Fire and shows up consistently through to the end. Whether the series casts him and Charlie early on just for background family moments, like Molly's magical 'grandfather clock', is still up in the air. In the movies, the clock featured photos of each family member, but the show might take a simpler route with names instead. For now, we've got a solid Weasley lineup to start the journey with Harry. HBO's Harry Potter series is currently filming and is slated to premiere sometime in early 2027.

'South Park' to Take Aim at Trump's D.C. Federalization in New Episode
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. South Park teased a new episode on Wednesday, taking a swipe at President Donald Trump's federalization of Washington, D.C. Newsweek reached out to the White House via email for comment. Why It Matters The deployments of National Guard troops to the nation's capital represent an unprecedented federal intervention in the District of Columbia's local policing and prompted legal challenges, public protests and sharp criticism from D.C. officials who said the move violated home rule. The shift raised questions about the use of the National Guard for domestic law-enforcement support and the scope of presidential emergency powers. What To Know The episode, titled "Sickofancy," dropped a teaser that showed tanks and National Guard troops around the White House and the Supreme Court and arrives as the Trump administration had moved to assert federal control over the District's police force and authorized hundreds of Guard members and federal agents to operate in the city. The 20-second trailer for the episode shows the character "Towelie" arriving in Washington, D.C., amid soldiers, tanks and armed personnel. In the clip, Towelie said, "This seems like a perfect place for a towel," as he approaches the White House lawn. 'Sickofancy': Towelie goes to Washington, D.C. South Park's 27th season continues this Wednesday, August 20 at 10/9c on Comedy Central and next day on Paramount+. — South Park (@SouthPark) August 20, 2025 The broader context for the satire includes President Donald Trump's declaration of a public-safety emergency for Washington and a federal operation that incorporated agents and roughly 800 National Guard members already activated in the District, alongside additional state guard deployments from governors in several states. Trump tasked the federal agents and National Guard personnel to traverse city streets in an effort to restore law and order and restore the capital's beauty, the president said. South Park has previously taken swipes at the administration, notably depicting Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem shooting dogs, in its second episode this season, The Associated Press reports. What People Are Saying The White House this week on X: "Make D.C. Safe Again 🇺🇸 In 11 days: ✅ 160+ illegal aliens arrested, including known gang members & those charged with assault, kidnapping, burglary, & more. ✅ 59 firearms seized. ✅380+ total arrests. This operation reflects @POTUS' commitment to restoring safety & security." Trump this week on Truth Social: "D.C. gave Fake Crime numbers in order to create a false illusion of safety. This is a very bad and dangerous thing to do, and they are under serious investigation for so doing! Until 4 days ago, Washington, D.C., was the most unsafe 'city' in the United States, and perhaps the World. Now, in just a short period of time, it is perhaps the safest, and getting better every single hour! People are flocking to D.C. again, and soon, the beautification will begin!" D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on X this month: "Violent crime in DC is at its lowest level in 30 years. We had an unacceptable spike in 2023, so we changed our laws and strategies. Now, crime levels are not only down from 2023, but from before the pandemic. Our tactics are working, and we aren't taking our foot off the gas." What Happens Next The South Park episode will air on Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET. As federal, state and local officials negotiate legal and operational next steps for the capital's security, analysts and commentators are expected to continue to use the moment to debate the balance between public safety and local autonomy.
