John Butler Announces Two NZ Dates
New Studio Album 'PRISM' – Released September 5 on Jarrah Records
Chart-topping alternative singer-songwriter John Butler today announces his long-awaited return to New Zealand – his first band shows in nearly a decade – performing two intimate club shows at Meow Nui, Wellington and Powerstation, Auckland in September.
John reunites on PRISM tour with his first ever touring drummer, NZ legend Michael Barker.
The concerts coincide with the release of his deeply personal new studio album 'PRISM' on 5 September.
Butler said, 'I am really looking forward to returning to New Zealand with the band for the Prism album launch. Loving playing with Ian Peres, Michael Boase and reuniting with Michael Barker on the drums. We've been having such a great time bringing these new songs to life on stage and the older songs are sounding BETTER THAN ever. Sorry couldn't help myself!'
Significantly, 'PRISM' marks a formal departure from the John Butler Trio moniker. It's an album that is contemplative and explosive, joyous and free, funk-filled, cinematic and unapologetic, with singles 'Trippin On You' and 'So Sorry' already released.
'PRISM' is Season Three of Butler's Four Season roll-out – following Season One's album of meditations ('Running River') and Season Two's fully instrumental album ('Still Searching').
Butler, who featured in the 2024 Symphony at the Auckland Domain, is widely celebrated for his epic guitar instrumentals and pedal board wizardry. The New Zealand dates follow an extensive two-month North American summer tour, with Dispatch, Donavon Frankenreiter, G. Love & Special Sauce and Illiterate Light, including shows in Nashville, Red Rocks, NYC's Rooftop at Pier 17, Ravinia and more.

Event noticeboard: Swords, sorcery and a walk in the forest
The Spinoff's top picks of events from around the motu. The ball was wonderful, thanks for asking. It was so fun to get dressed up, and see friends dressed up. That, plus a workshop run by Steven Junil Park I attended recently and Emma Gleason's wonderful Substack, Crust, has got me thinking a lot about what I wear. Recently my most coveted item of clothing is a pair of polar fleece pants and my style is best described as low-effort. How boring!!! As the ball reminded me, what you wear can alter and enhance the whole experience of an event, and make it more fun. That's surely why so many kids' birthday parties are dress-up. As adults we probably need to think beyond constant costumes, and certainly beyond the rules of formal wear, but still keep in mind the experience altering quality the clothes have, and use it for good. Meow Nui, 92 Vivian Street, Te Aro, Wellington 7pm Saturday, July 26 $53 This is the kind of event you will remember on your death bed and it will bring a happy tear to your eye and a flutter to your heart. Life was sweet and good after all. For one night you can be a princess, or a squire, or anything you like. You will be amazed and delighted, and you will have some great photos to remember it all. Love has been poured into absolutely every element of the ball. There's a series of custom-made installations – Falkor the luckdragon as a couch, the sword in the stone, a turret and Artax in the quicksand, his reins poised for you to pull them – that serve as sets for photos and a couple of professional photographers are included. There's an elaborate stage, one Tom Sainsbury as the host and live sword fighting. And of course, there's the music. It will begin with the hero Luke Buda, then the supremely talented weirdos Grecco Romank and finally, Princess Chelsea and the Dream Warriors. Chelsea Nikkel always surprises me – just when I thought it was impossible for her to get better, she continues to level up. Chris Schulz has recently written about this phenomenon and touted her Aotearoa's best live performer. After last Friday's ball I have to agree, but it gets even better. She's not alone on stage – there's another seven musicians, the Dream Warriors, and every one of them is incredible too. If that's not enough to convince you to go, I have one more fact. This will be Princess Chelsea's last live performance for the year, she told Schulz she needs her energy to write new songs. That means its the last show of a particular era. The next shows, who knows how many moons away, will have different songs, a different energy and possibly different Dream Warriors. You have to catch it while you can! UK Rock'n'Rollers Wunderhorse Perform Debut New Zealand Tour
UK rockers Wunderhorse have locked in a string of headline shows across Australia and New Zealand this September - kicking off in Aotearoa at The Powerstation in Auckland, followed by Meow Nui in Wellington before hopping across the ditch. Wunderhorse's 2024 album Midas follows the band's acclaimed 2022 debut, Cub, and sets them up as one of British guitar music's most exciting outfits. Recorded at Minnesota's Pachyderm Studio (birthplace of Nirvana's In Utero and PJ Harvey's Rid Of Me) with producer Craig Silvey, the album reached #6 in the UK charts and preceded their biggest headline tour to date, as well as an arena tour support slot with Sam Fender in December. Adopting an organic, unpolished recording process, Midas captures the visceral atmosphere of Wunderhorse's raucous live performances. "We wanted it to sound like your face is pressed up against the amp," frontman Jacob Slater told The Guardian. "No frills, no polish – just pure, uncut rock'n'roll." Indeed, the album's rugged hooks, unfiltered noise, and fierce melodic sensitivity set Wunderhorse up for a year that will see them firmly established as an endlessly addictive and rousing generational talent. About Wunderhorse: Wunderhorse (Jacob Slater, Harry Fowler, Peter Woodin and Jamie Staples) have seen their popularity snowball the old fashioned way; winning fans over through visceral live performances and Slater's vivid songwriting. Their 2022 debut album 'Cub' saw them graduate from raucous basements to show-stealing support tours with the likes of Fontaines D.C, Pixies, and Sam Fender, and a packed-out Glastonbury Woodsies tent – all in the space of a year. Their new single 'Midas' captures the raw power and energy that has set them apart as one of the most formidable live acts of recent years. Rugged hooks, unfiltered noise, and fierce melodic sensitivity set Wunderhorse up for a year that will see them firmly established as an endlessly addictive and rousing generational talent.
