Space Force commercial office eyes pilot for quick-reaction launches
The Space Force is exploring options to use its new Commercial Augmentation Space Reserve to facilitate on-demand launches for getting much needed capabilities on orbit quickly.
Col. Richard Kniseley, who leads the service's Commercial Space Office, told reporters in an April 10 briefing at the Space Symposium in Colorado Springs, Colo., his team will work with the Space Force's launch enterprise and its Space Safari office to that end. That office has been coordinating a series of Tactically Responsive Space exercises aimed at sharpening the service's ability to react to real-time, on-orbit needs.
The pilot effort will focus on establishing a framework for using the Commercial Augmentation Space Reserve, or CASR, for responsive launches. Kniseley said Space Safari is particularly interested in CASR's approach to managing supply chain risk and security issues and creating an on-call vendor pool.
The goal is to start the pilot by this fall, Kniseley said, noting that the effort would largely be a tabletop exercise rather than an operational demonstration.
The Space Force created the Commercial Augmentation Space Reserve as a mechanism to leverage commercial capabilities both in peacetime and during a conflict. Officials have compared the program to the Air Force's Civil Reserve Air Fleet, which contracts with commercial airlines to provide additional airlift capacity in emergencies.
While the Space Force has its own military-unique requirements, commercial space companies already provide many capabilities the Defense Department relies on, including satellite communications, space domain awareness and launch services. The service in recent years has made a concerted effort to better understand how it can take advantage of those capabilities and integrate them into a range of mission areas.
The Space Force awarded its first four CASR contracts in early March. The awards totaled $1.1 million and went to companies who provide space domain awareness services. Kniseley said the service plans to make additional awards for satellite communications and tactical surveillance, reconnaissance and tracking — which includes data and imagery collection and dissemination.
Kniseley noted that as the service starts to execute on the initial contracts, it's still fleshing out structural elements of CASR, like the policies around prioritizing government demand and how to offer financial protection for commercial companies who might be targeted by U.S. adversaries. The Space Force is working closely with the Pentagon's policy shop to address these questions and hopes to have results from an ongoing study in the next few months.
The Commercial Space Office has also started convening CASR wargame exercises as a way to better understand the nuances of each mission area involved in the program.
Kniseley said the team recently held its first commercial satellite communications wargame, bringing together several SATCOM vendors to explore how they would distribute capacity in various wartime and peacetime scenarios and weigh the demands of investors, private sector customers, government users and international allies.
'We have a number of different action items and topics we want to work on and we are now going to get back together with the SATCOM communication in May to have a deep dive to start answering some of those questions,' Kniseley said, noting that there will be a second SATCOM wargame later this year.

Will Palantir Stock Trounce Nvidia in the Second Half of 2025?
Palantir Technologies' stock has handily outperformed Nvidia so far this year. Palantir should continue to enjoy commercial momentum, while the Trump administration's trade policies weigh on Nvidia. However, Palantir's sky-high valuation could become a problem. 10 stocks we like better than Nvidia › If Palantir Technologies (NASDAQ: PLTR) and Nvidia (NASDAQ: NVDA) were in the stock equivalent of a boxing match, we'd have a technical knockout so far this year. Palantir has crushed Nvidia, with its shares skyrocketing close to 70%, while Nvidia's stock is up by only a single-digit percentage. However, the match isn't over. Will Palantir stock trounce Nvidia in the second half of 2025? Palantir's tremendous momentum in the first five or so months of 2025 has been the result of several factors. The company's rapidly growing commercial revenue is one of its biggest tailwinds. Palantir reported commercial revenue of $255 million in the first quarter, up 71% year over year and 19% quarter over quarter. Its U.S. commercial total contract booking value soared 183% year over year to $810 million, the highest quarterly number in Palantir's history. Of course, Palantir still relies heavily on government contracts. That business is also booming, with the company's U.S. government revenue jumping 45% year over year in Q1 to $373 million. The prospects of congressional passage of President Trump's "Big, Beautiful Bill" have also excited Palantir shareholders. Palantir is one of several companies viewed as front-runners in developing the Golden Dome missile defense system included in the legislation. What about Nvidia? Instead of momentum, the tech stock has mainly experienced malaise. The Trump administration's export restrictions on artificial intelligence (AI) chips have created a dark cloud that's hovering over Nvidia's head. The company wrote off $4.5 billion in Q1 because of excess inventory and lower demand for its H20 GPUs as a result of those export restrictions. That wasn't the only example of President Trump's trade policies that are hurting Nvidia. Tariffs are having an impact, too. CFO Colette Kress acknowledged in the company's recent earnings call that "tariff-related uncertainty temporarily impacted" systems revenue in the first quarter. What's in store for Palantir and Nvidia in the second half of 2025? I'll do my best to peer into the crystal ball to predict the near-future for the two companies. For Palantir, I think continued commercial success is highly likely. Within three days after reporting its Q1 results, the software maker announced a new commercial collaboration with Elon Musk's AI company xAI and investment holding company TWG Global, as well as a partnership with nonprofit healthcare standards organization The Joint Commission. I expect Palantir's commercial revenue will keep growing robustly in the second half of the year. With Nvidia, I predict that its new Blackwell GPUs will remain a smashing commercial success. Blackwell is already the company's fastest ramp-up in its history. I look for Blackwell's profit margins to improve as the year progresses, boosting Nvidia's earnings. My crystal ball gets cloudy on two fronts, though. I'm not sure about whether the "Big, Beautiful Bill" will pass the Senate in its current form. And while I think Palantir has a good shot at winning part of the Golden Dome contract if the bill does become law, it's not a slam dunk. I'm also not confident predicting how the Trump administration's trade policies will affect Nvidia in the second half of the year. President Trump's plans change too frequently. It's also possible that the federal courts will ultimately pull the rug from underneath his efforts to levy steep across-the-board tariffs. Let's return to our original question: Will Palantir stock trounce Nvidia in the second half of 2025? I think the uncertainties surrounding Nvidia make it more likely than not that Palantir will outperform Nvidia through the end of the year. However, I wouldn't go as far as saying that Palantir will trounce Nvidia. There's also one key factor that could make Nvidia the better pick in the back half of the year: valuation. Palantir's forward earnings multiple is nearly 244. If the company's growth were accelerating, that nosebleed valuation might not be so alarming. However, Palantir's growth is slowing. Nvidia's growth is slowing, too. But the GPU maker's shares trade at 32 times forward earnings. That's still high. It isn't in the stratosphere like Palantir's, though. Maybe valuation won't matter over the next few months. However, valuation always matters over the long term. Because of this, I think Nvidia is a better stock to own over the long term than Palantir. Trump should fulfill his promise to create the Space National Guard
As America faces growing competition in the space domain, it's time to strengthen — not dismantle — one of its most proven space war-fighting tools. The creation of the U.S. Space Force in 2019 was a historic shift in national defense. But it remains incomplete without an essential piece: a Space National Guard. Today, more than 1,000 Air National Guard members across several states are executing critical space missions — missile warning, satellite command and control, space domain awareness, defensive cyber operations and expeditionary space electromagnetic warfare. These units represent nearly one-third of the Space Force's operational squadrons and are already integrated into global combatant command operations. Despite that, the Department of the Air Force is pursuing a plan to transfer these forces into the active duty Space Force — effectively dismantling seasoned units and starting over. Internal projections show only 8% of these Guardsmen are willing to leave their current status. The rest would walk, taking decades of hard-won experience with them. This approach isn't just shortsighted — it's expensive. The National Guard Bureau estimates that standing up a Space National Guard using existing personnel and infrastructure would cost just $250,000. By contrast, transferring and rebuilding units under active duty structures is projected to cost upwards of $700 million. That's a staggering figure, particularly as the proposed fiscal 2026 defense budget would force the Space Force to cut elsewhere. Trump promises to launch Space National Guard if elected More importantly, this move would eliminate a unique military advantage: surge capacity. National Guard space operators provide a combat-ready reserve force that can be activated quickly and cost effectively. Their hybrid civilian-military status brings deep technical expertise in aerospace, cybersecurity and telecommunications — skills the active duty force can't easily replicate. Their part-time model also allows for operational scale-up in times of conflict or crisis, giving U.S. commanders strategic flexibility without permanently growing the full-time force. In an era when near-peer competitors like China and Russia are accelerating their space capabilities, dismantling a surge-ready reserve component is not just inefficient — it's dangerous. The U.S. must preserve and enhance every ounce of operational capacity it already has. Support for a Space National Guard spans party lines. Multiple bills to establish the component have been introduced in Congress. Governors have expressed concern over losing control of their state-based units. And in 2024, then-candidate Donald Trump pledged before the National Guard Association that, if reelected, he would create the Space National Guard as the 'primary combat reserve of the U.S. Space Force.' That promise has not yet been fulfilled. The infrastructure exists. The mission sets are clearly defined. The personnel are trained and ready. What's missing is leadership at the national level to codify what's already working — and avoid the costly mistake of breaking it apart. This isn't a debate about force structure on a whiteboard. It's a matter of readiness, war-fighting continuity and strategic risk. The Space Force was designed to be lean, agile and focused. A Space National Guard complements that mission, providing surge-to-war capacity without burdening the active duty end strength or duplicating systems already in place. The U.S. needs a space reserve that's trained, trusted and ready to mobilize. We already have one. We should keep it. It's time for the administration and Congress to act. Create the Space National Guard — before operational capability is lost, taxpayer dollars are wasted and national readiness suffers. U.S. Air Force Gen. Joseph L.
