Automakers brace for profit hits in anticipation of tariff price hikes

After a wave of rushed buying, driven by looming tariffs, US car sales have started to slow, weighing on carmakers.
New car sales fell by 300,000 in June from 15.6 million to 15.3 million, according to data released by Cox Automotive last month.
'Now we've got sales slowing because [the pre-tariff buying] surge pretty much pulled ahead a lot of people that might have been in the market this year, who wanted to buy before tariffs hit,' Mark Schirmer, director of industry insights at Cox Automotive, told Al Jazeera.
This will only get harder for carmakers, dealerships and shoppers down the road.
'Price rises together with demand destruction,' Sina Golara, assistant professor of supply chain management at Georgia State's Robinson College of Business, told Al Jazeera. 'If consumers don't have the resilience to pay for those higher prices, they'll take a step back.'
United States President Donald Trump's erratic approach to tariffs, putting some in place and then taking them away, has made it difficult for businesses to plan. In April, car companies, including Stellantis, Ford and Volvo, suspended financial guidance as a result of the uncertainty.
Last month Volvo also said that tariffs will cost it $1.2bn in the second quarter. Ford then announced it expects a reduced annual profits to $3bn after taking an $800m hit from tariffs in the second quarter. GM announced that it expects a $5bn hit, and Toyota said it expects $9.5bn in tariff-driven blows to profits for the year.
In May, Ford also announced it would have to raise prices on some of its cars made in Mexico, including the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, Maverick pick-up truck and Bronco Sport, in some cases by as much as $2,000, the Reuters news agency reported. Those cars began to reach lots last month.
As a result, consumers are overwhelmingly opting for used cars that are not subject to tariffs, including foreign-made ones, as they are already on US roads.
Used car sales are up 2.3 percent from this time last year, according to Used Car Index report, an auto industry insight platform by Edmunds.
In part, this is because of the limited supply of used cars. Edmunds's report says that buyers, and sellers looking to upgrade but need the money from sale of a current car, are hesitant about undertaking expenses amid economic uncertainty.
The bigger impact of both those trends is of inventory piling up. On average, dealerships have 82 days worth of cars on the lot, a roughly 14 percent increase between May and June.
An expensive escalation
Cox forecasts prices could rise anywhere between 4 to 8 percent over the next six months as a result of the tariffs. The group expects new car sales of 13 million to 13.3 million this year.
'Tariffs will be inflationary on both the new and used vehicle market,' Schirmer said, adding, the main challenge right now is the unsold inventory that's piling up.
Analysts believe that prices will continue to rise amid Trump's tariffs, especially as companies try to move supply chains to the US, as demanded by Trump, an effort that is years in the making.
'The tariff 'relief' is like putting a band-aid on a bullet wound with US car companies now dealing with the repercussions moving forward as this Twilight Zone situation will change the paradigm for the US auto industry for years to come,' Dan Ives, analyst at Wedbush Securities, said in a note provided to Al Jazeera.
In the meantime, the cost to import a car is expected to increase by $1,000 this year to $5,700, according to Cox Automotive.
'The US imports a little less than half of the new vehicles sold, but dependence on imports varies substantially by segment. The most dependent segments are at the two ends of the price spectrum – the most affordable vehicles and luxury vehicles. Most of the vehicles priced under $30,000 would face added costs that would make them unaffordable,' Cox Automotive chief economist Jonathan Smoke said in a June conference call shared with Al Jazeera.
EVs hit hard
Trump's new tax legislation – signed into law last month and which cut the EV tax credit of up to $7,500 – has already led to a significant pullback specifically for the electric vehicle marketplace as demand for the products begins to fall.
'Our forecast had been for approximately 10 percent of new vehicle sales this year to be EV. We slightly lowered that to 9 percent,' Schirmer added.
Volvo reported a 26 percent decline in sales for electric vehicles (12 percent overall). Ford EV sales tumbled by 31 percent. Rivian saw sales decline by 23 percent. Tesla saw a decline of 13.5 percent globally as CEO Elon Musk's political involvement hindered the brand's reputation. The cuts to the EV tax credit is expected to cost Tesla $1.2bn every year, JP Morgan forecast.
'Several dealers have also stated that these [EV tax credits] are the main drivers [for consumers]. So without those incentives, there would definitely be a significant hit through EV sales,' Golara added.
General Motors has been the exception to the rule. The Michigan-based auto giant doubled its EV sales in recent months.
Despite the dip in sales, Golora believes that the setback in the EV market is temporary.
'It's [the EV market] still compelling in the long run because many manufacturers have already reached a decision that this is where the industry is going,' Golara said.
'Investment [in EV production] doesn't look like a lost one. The payback period will be longer.'
Manufacturing strains
While US manufacturing ticked up overall in June, when it comes to motor vehicle and parts production, it is a different story. Production tumbled by 2.6 percent for the month as demand began to slow.
US auto manufacturing employment is also down. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment in auto manufacturing in the United States has tumbled by 35.7 percent since this time last year and down 2.4 percent from this time last month.
Al Jazeera reached out to the United Auto Workers for comment about the effect on car manufacturing jobs, but the organisation did not respond.
'Demand was not growing as fast as needed, and many manufacturers were caught by surprise. That's a problem, and it is kind of a longer-term, structural issue,' Golara said.

What are H-1B visas and how might the Trump administration change them?

President Donald Trump's administration wants to overhaul the nation's visa programme for highly skilled foreign workers. If the administration does what one official described, it would change H-1B visa rules to favour employers that pay higher wages. That could effectively transform the visa into what one expert called 'a luxury work permit' and disadvantage early-career workers with smaller salaries, including teachers. It could also upend the current visa programme's lottery system used to distribute visas to eligible foreign workers. 'This shift may prevent many employers, including small and midsize businesses, from hiring the talent they need in shortage occupations, ultimately reducing America's global competitiveness,' said David Leopold, a former president of the American Immigration Lawyers Association whose practice includes representing employers in the H-1B process. It's hard to find US workers in certain types of specialty fields, including software engineers and developers and some STEM positions. A White House office proposed the change on August 8, Bloomberg Law reported. Once the proposal appears in the Federal Register – the daily public report containing notices of proposed federal rule changes – the plan will become subject to a formal public comment period. It could be finalised within months, although it is likely to face legal challenges. Joseph Edlow, the director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services, told The New York Times in July that H-1B visas should favour companies that plan to pay foreign workers higher wages. The proposal Bloomberg Law described was in line with that goal. PolitiFact did not see a copy of the proposal, and the White House did not respond to our questions. But the Department of Homeland Security submitted the proposed rule to a Trump administration office in July, the Greenberg Traurig law firm wrote. Trump sought to reform the H-1B program during his first term but made limited progress. In January 2021, near the end of Trump's term, the Department of Homeland Security published a final rule similar to the current proposal, but the Biden administration did not implement it. Work visas were not a central part of Trump's 2024 immigration platform, but it was a point of debate in the weeks before he took office, with billionaire businessman Elon Musk – a megadonor to Trump who would briefly serve in his administration – speaking in favour of them. What are H-1B visas? The H-1B visa programme lets employers temporarily hire foreign workers in specialty fields, with about two-thirds working in computer-related jobs, according to the Congressional Research Service. Most H-1B visa holders come from India, followed by China. Currently, prospective H-1B employers must attest that they will pay the H-1B worker actual wages paid to similar employees or the prevailing wages for that occupation – whichever would result in the highest pay. To qualify for the non-immigrant visa, the employee must hold a specialised degree, license or training required by the occupation. The status is generally valid for up to three years and renewable for another three years, but it can be extended if the employer sponsors the worker for permanent residency, which includes permission to work and live in the US. Leopold said that the proposed change goes beyond the law's current wage mandate. 'This statutory mechanism is designed to prevent employers from paying H-1B workers less than their American counterparts, thereby protecting US workers from displacement,' Leopold said. Congress caps new H-1B visas at 85,000 per fiscal year, including 20,000 for noncitizens who earned advanced degrees. The government approved 400,000 H-1B applications, including renewals, in 2024, according to the nonpartisan Pew Research Center. Amazon has led the nation's employers since 2020 in its number of H-1B workers, Pew found. The New York metro area received more H-1B application approvals than any other metro area; College Station, Texas had the highest concentration of approvals. What could change with H1-B visas? The proposed policy favours higher-paid employees, experts said. Malcolm Goeschl, a San Francisco-based lawyer, said the rule will likely benefit tech companies, including many specialising in artificial intelligence. Such companies pay high salaries, including for entry-level positions. He said it will harm traditional tech companies' programmes for new graduates. 'There will likely be plenty of lottery numbers available at the top of the prevailing wage scale, but very few or none at the bottom,' Goeschl said. 'You may see young graduates shy away from the US labour market early on because of this. Or you could see companies just pay entry-level workers from other countries much higher salaries to get a chance in the lottery, leading to the perverse situation where the foreign workers are making a lot more money than similarly situated US workers.' The prevailing wage requirements are designed to protect US jobs from being undercut by lower paid foreign workers. David Bier, director of immigration studies at the libertarian Cato Institute, said the change would likely make it nearly impossible for recent immigrant college graduates, who tend to earn lower wages, to launch their careers in the United States on an H-1B visa. 'The short-term benefit would be the people who get selected are more productive, but the long-term cost might be to permanently redirect future skilled immigration to other countries,' Bier said. 'It would also effectively prohibit the H-1B for many industries that rely on it. K-12 schools in rural areas seeking bilingual teachers, for instance, will have no chance under this system.' Amid a nationwide teacher shortage, some school districts have hired H-1B visa holders, including smaller districts such as Jackson, Mississippi, and larger districts, including Dallas, Texas. Language immersion schools also often employ teachers from other countries using this visa programme. Why is there a debate about H-1B visas? The debate around H-1B visas does not neatly fall along partisan lines. Proponents say the existing visa programme allows American employers to fill gaps, compete with other countries and recruit the 'best minds'. Critics point to instances of fraud or abuse and say they favour policies that incentivise hiring Americans. In December, high-profile Republicans debated the visa programme on social media. MAGA influencer Laura Loomer denounced the programme and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon called it a 'scam'. On the other side, billionaire Elon Musk, a former H-1B visa holder whose companies employ such visa holders, called for the programme's reform but defended it as an important talent recruitment mechanism. Trump sided with Musk. 'I have many H-1B visas on my properties,' Trump told the New York Post in late December. 'I've been a believer in H-1B. I have used it many times. It's a great programme.' Senator Bernie Sanders disputed Musk, saying corporations abuse the programme as a way to get richer and should recruit American workers first. Such visa debates have continued. When US Representative Greg Murphy, a urologist, argued on X August 8 that the visas 'are critical for helping alleviate the severe physician shortage', thousands replied. Christina Pushaw, a Republican who works for Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, pushed back: 'Why not figure out the causes of the domestic physician shortage and try to pass legislation to address those?'

Agencies China's new yuan loans contracted in July for the first time in 20 years as the economy struggled, falling well short of analysts' forecasts, but improvements in broader credit growth suggest the central bank is in no rush to ease policy. While new loans typically fall in July after strong gains in June when banks strive to meet quarterly targets, the latest reading was well below even the most pessimistic analyst's forecasts, pointing to weak private sector demand as Beijing tries to negotiate a durable trade deal with Washington. 'The July credit data was weak, but money supply exceeded expectations, reflecting the impact of last year's low base and debt resolution efforts,' said Xing Zhaopeng, senior China strategist at ANZ. 'At present, monetary policy has entered a period of observation, and a rate cut is unlikely in the short term. From the perspective of liquidity needs, a reserve requirement ratio (RRR) cut could also be delayed. Structural monetary policy remains the main tool for easing.' New yuan loans contracted by 50 billion yuan ($6.97 billion) in July, falling well short of analysts' forecasts and plunging from 2.24 trillion yuan in June, according to Reuters calculations based on data released by the People's Bank of China. That marked the first contraction since July 2005 and the largest monthly decline since December 1999, according to central bank data. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected new yuan loans last month to reach 300 billion yuan, compared with 260 billion yuan a year ago. Along with seasonal trends which buoyed June's tally, credit demand also had rebounded sharply that month as sentiment improved following rounds of trade talks in Europe and a tentative easing of trade tensions with the US. The central bank does not provide monthly breakdowns. Reuters calculated the July figures based on the PBOC's January-July data released on Wednesday, compared with the January-June figure. In the first seven months of the year, banks extended 12.87 trillion yuan in new loans, versus 12.92 trillion yuan in January-June, implying a net reduction of 50 billion yuan in July. Banks issued 13.53 trillion yuan in new loans in the same period last year. Household loans contracted 489.3 billion yuan in July, versus a rise of 597.6 billion yuan in June, according to Reuters calculations, as a prolonged property market crisis showed no signs of easing. Corporate loans plunged to 60 billion yuan from 1.77 trillion yuan in June. The PBOC release did not give any explanations for changes in credit trends. China's economy slowed less than expected in the second quarter due in part to policy support and as factories took advantage of a US-China trade truce to front-load shipments. But analysts warn the second half will be tougher as weak domestic demand, the property slump and rising global trade risks ramp up pressure on Beijing. The United States and China agreed early this week to extended their tariff truce for another 90 days, staving off triple-digit duties on each other's goods, but business confidence remains fragile, with some factories cutting selling prices, shifts and workers' pay. On Tuesday, China announced it would offer interest rate subsidies for businesses in eight consumer service sectors, as well as for individual consumers. Eligible businesses and consumers can receive an annual interest subsidy of one percentage point on loans. Beijing has ramped up infrastructure spending and consumer subsidies, alongside steady monetary easing.

Brazil plans aid packages for businesses impacted by Trump tariffs

The Brazilian government has unveiled a plan to support local exporters impacted by the 50 percent tariff imposed by the United States. Officials announced what has been dubbed 'Sovereign Brazil', a credit lifeline of 30 billion reais ($5.5bn) on Wednesday. Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva described the plan, which includes a bill to be sent to Congress, as a first step to help local exporters. Congressional leaders attended Wednesday's ceremony, a first in months, in a sign of growing political support for the leftist leader in response to US President Donald Trump's tariffs. Other measures announced by the Brazilian government include postponing tax charges for companies affected by US tariffs, providing 5 billion reais ($926,000) in tax credits to small and medium-sized companies until the end of 2026 and expanding access to insurance against cancelled orders. The plan also incentivises public purchases of items that could not be exported to the US. The measures take effect immediately, but will only stay in place for four months unless Congressional leaders act. 'We cannot be scared, nervous and anxious when there is a crisis. A crisis is for us to create new things,' President Lula said. 'In this case, what is unpleasant is that the reasons given to impose sanctions against Brazil do not exist.' The tariffs have drastically weighed on sectors across the South American nation, including the beef industry. In July, when Trump first announced the plan, Robert Perosa, president of industry trade group Brazilian Beef Exporters Associations (ABIEC), said that the tariffs would make it 'economically unfeasible' to continue to export to the US market. Trump has directly tied the 50 percent tariff on many imported Brazilian goods to the judicial situation of his embattled ally, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who is currently under house arrest. In late July, the White House said that the order to impose this rate of tariffs is because of 'the Government of Brazil's politically motivated persecution, intimidation, harassment, censorship, and prosecution of former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and thousands of his supporters are serious human rights abuses that have undermined the rule of law in Brazil'. The former Brazilian leader is accused of trying to facilitate a coup after losing the election in 2022.
