Nic Vansteenberghe speaks on Cierra Ortega's exit

Express Tribune16-07-2025
In a July 15 interview on Chicks in the Office, Love Island USA Season 7 alum Nic Vansteenberghe addressed former partner Cierra Ortega's departure from the show following resurfaced social media posts that included a racial slur.
Ortega exited the villa during the July 6 episode. At the time, her removal was described on air as related to a 'personal situation.'
Vansteenberghe explained that he was not informed of the actual reason for her departure while still in the villa.
'It was a completely normal day,' he said. 'She just left.'
He added that producers provided only a 'very vague' explanation, citing a 'personal reason' and offering no further details.
Vansteenberghe, 24, said he had a 'really close' relationship with Ortega and was considering leaving the show alongside her. Ultimately, he chose to remain.
'If whatever is happening in the outside world is something I don't align with, then that could be perceived as me supporting that,' he said.
After filming concluded, Vansteenberghe learned about the resurfaced content and said he was now able to 'have a better perception' of the situation based on his values.
In response to criticism that he moved on quickly with contestant Olandria Carthen, Vansteenberghe clarified that their connection formed gradually.
'It took a lot of time and conversation,' he said. 'We both felt lost and confused together.'
Ortega issued a public video statement on July 9 acknowledging the slur and stating she was unaware of its offensive nature at the time. She said she agreed with the network's decision to remove her from the show and accepted responsibility.

Netflix renews Wednesday season 3, explores Addams Family spinoff with Tim Burton and Jenna Ortega

Netflix has officially renewed its hit series Wednesday for a third season, with early discussions underway for a potential spinoff based on other Addams Family characters, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The announcement comes ahead of season two's premiere on August 6. In their first joint interview, director Tim Burton and star Jenna Ortega reflected on the show's success, the intensity of production, and navigating public scrutiny. Ortega, now also a producer on the series, described the early filming experience as 'chaotic and stressful,' having started at just 17. 'I don't think I've ever shot a scene that hasn't kept me up at night,' she admitted. Despite these challenges, Wednesday became Netflix's most-watched English-language series, racking up 252 million views globally. Ortega's comments in a past podcast, where she mentioned changing lines to better fit the character, sparked controversy. Reflecting on the incident, she said, 'In no way did I mean to come across that way… it was a good lesson.' Burton, who directed both Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, praised Ortega's instinctual understanding of the role. 'You need this weird internal strength and clarity… you can't manufacture it,' he said. Showrunner Alfred Gough echoed this sentiment, noting, 'She has a 360-degree view… you don't find that with most actors.' With an expanded cast in season two — including Steve Buscemi and Billie Piper — the team has leaned into a bigger scale and more creative freedom. 'Netflix has a lot more trust this time around,' Ortega said. Beyond the show, both Ortega and Burton criticized the growing influence of AI in entertainment. Ortega warned that AI-generated content creates 'junk food for the brain,' while Burton said it left him feeling like something had been taken away from his work. While Warner Bros. hinted at early development for Beetlejuice 3, Burton stated he hasn't been officially approached. 'It took 35 years to make the second one… I know those odds aren't good,' he said. Ortega firmly added she wouldn't return to the project without Burton at the helm: 'It is what it is because of Tim.' As for the future of Wednesday, neither Burton nor Ortega are making long-term plans. 'I don't even have plans for tomorrow,' Ortega said. Burton agreed: 'Me either.'

Sia holds hands with Harry Jowsey, then signs up to compete for his heart on new Netflix show

Singer-songwriter Sia has stirred buzz online after being seen holding hands with reality TV personality Harry Jowsey in Los Angeles, just as he announced his new dating show, Let's Marry... Harry. The sighting led to widespread speculation about a potential romance between the two, but recent social media activity suggests the moment may have been more promotional than personal. On Monday morning, Sia took to Instagram to support Jowsey's upcoming Netflix series by posting a casting call inviting women to apply for a chance to win his heart. In a playful twist, she added that she herself would be signing up, fueling further intrigue. Jowsey responded to the post by sharing it on his Instagram Stories with the caption 'love you,' along with a laughing emoji and a red heart—indicating the pair's close, possibly platonic relationship. -Instagram. The public was quick to jump to conclusions after Sia, 49, and Jowsey, 28, were photographed leaving a restaurant in Los Angeles hand-in-hand over the weekend. Given their 21-year age gap and Sia's recent divorce filing from Dan Bernard, the images sparked immediate dating rumors. However, with both stars actively promoting Let's Marry... Harry, the outing appears to have been a strategic move to generate buzz around the show. Jowsey, best known for his appearances on Too Hot to Handle and Love Island USA, will lead the upcoming dating series, expected to premiere in 2026. While the nature of his connection with Sia remains ambiguous, their coordinated public appearance and online interactions suggest a friendship possibly rooted in mutual promotion. As of now, neither party has confirmed any romantic involvement. Their playful posts have, however, successfully drawn attention to Jowsey's latest venture into reality television.

Cierra Ortega takes loaded swipe at Nic Vansteenberghe after 'Love Island' exit amid racism scandal

Cierra Ortega, a former Love Island USA contestant, has responded to her exit from the show with a direct message from Greece. In a pointed Instagram post, the 25-year-old reflected on her journey and called out her former partner, Nic Vansteenberghe. Sharing a sun-drenched video from Mykonos, Ortega wrote, "Thanks, I booked a flight to Mykonos after surviving the villain edit on reality TV and I didn't end up with the guy who never actually liked me and wanted my friend the entire time." Ortega was removed from the villa mid-show after producers learned of her past use of a racial slur. She later addressed the controversy in a video, stating, "This is something that deserved punishment, and the punishment has absolutely been received." While she expressed remorse, she also asked viewers not to target her family, citing harassment and threats. Following her departure, Vansteenberghe quickly recoupled with Olandria Carthen and the two ultimately placed second in the finale. In a podcast appearance, he said, "She just left. It was some sort of personal reason or something along those lines." He added, "If whatever is happening in the outside world is something I don't align with, then that could be perceived as me supporting that." While Olandria has not commented, fans continue to debate the authenticity of the final pairings and the show's handling of accountability and redemption.
