South Africa's Lungi Ngidi surpasses Dale Steyn to become the third-highest wicket-taker for the Proteas in T20Is with 65 wickets in 45 matches.
South Africa pacer Lungi Ngidi has surpassed the legendary Dale Steyn to become the third-highest wicket-taker for the Proteas in T20Is after claiming a wicket in the second match of the Tri-Series against New Zealand on Wednesday.
Ngidi surpassed Steyn by dismissing New Zealand opener Tim Seifert, who was looking in good form before miscuing a pitch in the third over. Ngidi's slower cutter deceived Seifert, resulting in a catch by Senuran Muthusamy.
Ngidi now has 65 wickets in T20 internationals, achieving this milestone in 45 matches, two fewer than Steyn who accomplished it in 47 matches. Leading the list is left-arm wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi with 89 wickets from 70 matches, followed by Kagiso Rabada with 71 wickets in 65 games.
Bowler Matches Wickets
Tabraiz Shamsi 70 89
Kagiso Rabada 65 71
Lungi Ngidi 45 65
Dale Steyn 47 65
Imran Tahir 35 61
What Happened In South Africa Vs New Zealand?
In the match, South Africa won the toss and elected to field. New Zealand lost two wickets in the powerplay, with Seifert dismissed for 22 runs off 16 deliveries and his opening partner Devon Conway following shortly after. A half-century from Tim Robinson and a significant innings from Bevon Jacobs helped New Zealand reach 173-5 in their 20 overs, thanks to a crucial partnership between Tim Robinson and Bevon Jacobs.
In response, South Africa struggled with the bat. Chasing 174 for victory, South Africa began brightly through Lhuan-dre Pretorius, who played a lively cameo of 27. However, his dismissal triggered a collapse, with the Proteas slipping to 62/5 by the ninth over. Dewald Brevis and George Linde both contributed brisk 30s to revive hopes, but their untimely dismissals stalled the momentum. Gerald Coetzee fought valiantly towards the end, but the target proved too steep. South Africa were eventually bowled out for 152 with 10 balls remaining, giving New Zealand a confident start to the series.
Matt Henry and Jacob Duffy spearheaded the bowling attack with three wickets each, while Ish Sodhi contributed with two, and James Neesham added one. Mitchell Santner showcased a moment of brilliance in the field to dismiss Rassie van der Dussen. Despite solid spells from Kwena Maphaka and Senuran Muthusamy, South Africa could not avoid their first loss of the tournament. They now have one win and one defeat, while New Zealand start strong with a victory.
New Zealand had kicked off their Tri-Series campaign with a composed and clinical performance, securing a 21-run victory over South Africa.

What Rishabh Pant did was unmatched: Shardul

Agency: PTI Last Updated: Manchester, Jul 24 (PTI) India all-rounder Shardul Thakur on Thursday lauded Rishabh Pan't 'unmatched" courage and pain threshold after the latter came out to bat on day two of the fourth Test against England with a broken foot. Speaking to reporters, Shardul confirmed that Pant indeed suffered a fracture while batting on day one. 'I think it was always our plan (to try and bring Pant to the middle). There were quite a few efforts from the medical team. So, yes, kudos to them," said Shardul referring to Pant's fifty that helped India post 358 in their first innings. 'They could get Rishabh back onto the field. He could bat there for a while. And whatever he did, it's of course vital runs for the team he scored. 'And yes, he was in a lot of pain. And we have seen him doing a lot of amazing things. And this was just another amazing thing that he did for the team today," added Shardul. Shardul and the rest of his teammates were excited to see how Pant approached his innings after resuming at an overnight 37 when he retired hurt after copping a blow on his right foot while attempting a reverse sweep off England pacer Chris Woakes on Wednesday. 'Everyone was very excited to see how he would approach for his innings. And I think what he showed today, the passion he showed for the team is unmatched. We have seen a lot of instances in the past when they have batted with fractures. 'I think there was a time when Graeme Smith was batting in the South African team. His hand was fractured. So, in these moments, the grit of the player comes into play. 'And I think Rishabh's positivity and his grit keeps him away from all the pains and whatever pain he has. His pain bearing capacity is very high. If he is in pain, it is a big injury," said Thakur. On Pant batting in the second innings, Thakur said: 'That is his call and medical team's call. In the morning we thought maybe he will be able to bat. Earlier, I had to touch his feet and see if he was able to walk properly. If he is able to walk properly, then we can talk about batting. 'When we reached the ground and were warming up up, he was not there. And then I went for batting. I don't know what happened after that. And I think there is a fracture," confirmed Thakur. England opener Zak Crawley too was surprised to see Pant in the middle. 'Not many people can do what Pant did today," said Crawley, who put England in a good position by sharing a 166-run opening stand with Ben Duckett. England ended the day at 225 for two with Ollie Pope and Joe Root in the middle. Lovlina Borgohain, Nikhat Zareen return to Indian squad for World Championships

Agency: PTI Last Updated: New Delhi, Jul 24 (PTI) Star boxers Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain were on Thursday named in India's squad for the World Championships set to take place in Liverpool in September. The 20-member squad was finalised after the boxers went through a week-long assessment at the National Institute of Sports (NIS), Patiala. The tournament, to be held from September 4 to 14, will be the first World Championships held under the aegis of the new governing body of the sport, World Boxing. It will feature competitions in 10 weight classes for men and women. It will also be for the first time ever that male and female boxers would compete in an Olympics-style boxing at the same event for the title of World Boxing Champion. Both Zareen and Borgohain had missed the women's nationals in March. While the two-time world champion Zareen was injured at the time, the Tokyo Olympic bronze medallist Borgohain had missed the event as the Assam state unit refused to send her due to infighting in the federation. The duo had competed at the Elite Women's Boxing Tournament in Hyderabad earlier this month to return to the national camp, but they had also missed the recent World Cup in Astana. The men's squad includes Asian Games bronze medallist Narender Berwal (90+ kg), two-time World Cup winners Hitesh Gulia (70kg) and Abhinash Jamwal (65kg) among others. Squads Women's: Meenakshi Hooda (48kg), Nikhat Zareen (51kg), Sakshi (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Sanju Khatri (60kg), Neeraj Phogat (60kg), Sanamacha Chanu (70kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg), Pooja Rani (80kg), Nupur Sheoran (80+ kg). Men's: Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (50kg), Pawan Bartwal (55kg), Sachin Siwach jr (60kg), Abhinash Jamwal (65kg), Hitesh Gulia (70kg), Sumit Kundu (75kg), Lakshya Chahar (80kg), Jugnoo Ahlawat (85kg), Harsh Chaudhary (90kg), Narender Berwal (90+ kg). Hussain Slams Shubman Gill's Captaincy: 'Handed Back Rishabh Pant's Runs'

Nasser Hussain criticized Shubman Gill's captaincy and India's bowling in the Old Trafford Test, questioning the choice of debutant Kamboj over Siraj for the new ball spells. Former England captain Nasser Hussain was critical of Shubman Gill's captaincy and India's bowling in the Old Trafford Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy on Thursday (July 24). He said the bowlers were 'very poor' with their lines in England's first innings, while Gill's decision to give the new ball to debutant Anshul Kamboj over Mohammed Siraj was 'odd', with the combination just 'giving back' the hard-earned runs. Batting seemed much more difficult when India were bowled out for 358 in the first innings. Only three batters crossed the 50-run mark, including Pant, who was retired-hurt due to a foot fracture on Wednesday, and came back limping when India were six wickets down to reach a 75-ball 54. In reply, the visitors failed to pick any wickets in the 14 overs they bowled in the second session. England eventually went to stumps at a cozy 225/2. 'Slightly changing conditions, but they bowled very poorly," Hussain told Sky Sports after the second session. 'A change in overhead conditions doesn't make you bowl both sides of the wicket. Too many balls on the pads. Captain's decisions… didn't quite agree with, to be honest. Kamboj wasn't in the squad a week ago, to bring him into the team and give him a new ball ahead of Siraj… seems odd," he added. 'I would've gone for Siraj for a short burst, then switched him to the other end to follow Bumrah. We've all been talking about the green channel on the strip across… this is the end where Stokes bowled and got his fifer, and got uneven bounce and sideways movement. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong… Rishabh Pant went out there on one leg, and got valuable runs today. They've just handed those runs back to England." Ben Duckett and Zak Crawley put up a 166-run stand which was broken by spinner Ravindra Jadeja in the 32nd over, deep into the final session of the day. Kamboj was brought back for a second spell and took the important wicket of Gill but Joe Root and Ollie Pope survived some more harmless bowling. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
