Gauff splits with coach Daly ahead of U.S. Open

Reuters7 hours ago
Aug 20 (Reuters) - Two-times Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff has parted ways with coach Matthew Daly just days before the start of the U.S. Open, ESPN reported on Wednesday.
World number three Gauff will continue to work with longtime coach Jean-Christophe Faurel and has also brought biomechanics specialist Gavin MacMillan.
She was seen training on Wednesday at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in New York with both Faurel and MacMillan, who previously worked with world number one Aryna Sabalenka, helping her with her serve and forehand.
Gauff's own serve has been under scrutiny. She committed 42 double faults in just three matches at the Canadian Open earlier this month, part of a season-long pattern that has seen her rack up a tour-leading 320.
Under Daly and Faurel, Gauff enjoyed some of the best results of her career, including winning the WTA 1000 China Open, the WTA Finals, and this year's French Open. However, her recent form has dipped, with just four singles wins since Roland Garros and a first-round exit at Wimbledon.
The U.S. Open main draw begins Sunday, with 2023 champion Gauff set to appear in a Thursday night exhibition at Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Yusei Kikuchi, Angels snap lengthy skid vs. Reds

August 21 - Luis Rengifo drove in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and Yusei Kikuchi allowed one run on seven hits over seven innings as the Los Angeles Angels snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Cincinnati Reds with a 2-1 on Wednesday night in Anaheim, Calif. Yoan Moncada hit a home run and Mike Trout went 2-for-4 to extend his on-base streak to 21 games for Los Angeles, which won for the second time in six games. Reid Detmers (4-3) picked up the win with a scoreless inning of relief and Luis Garcia, subbing for injured closer Kenley Jansen (ribs), pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to pick up his first save. Kikuchi didn't walk a batter and struck out four. He left after throwing 88 pitches, 58 for strikes. Ke'Bryan Hayes had two doubles and scored a run and Noelvi Marte went 2-for-4 with an RBI for Cincinnati, which had a three-game win streak snapped. It was Marte's fifth consecutive multi-hit game and also extended his hitting streak to 11 games. Graham Ashcraft (7-5) suffered the loss after allowing one run on three hits in 2/3 of an inning. The loss kept Cincinnati from moving into a tie with the New York Mets for the final wild-card spot in the National League. Cincinnati took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Austin Hays led off with an opposite field double down the right field line and scored two outs later on a single by Marte. Los Angeles tied it 1-1 in the fourth inning on Moncada's ninth home run, a 394-foot drive to left-center. The Angels took their first lead of the series in the eighth inning against Ashcraft. Bryce Teodosio led off with a double to left and scored what proved to be the game-winner one out later on a ground single to left by Rengifo. Los Angeles shortstop Zach Neto, the reigning American League Player of the Week, was hit by a pitch in the third inning and left the game before the start of the sixth inning with what was described by the team as left wrist soreness. --Field Level Media

Errani, Vavassori fight back to retain US Open mixed doubles crown

NEW YORK, Aug 20 (Reuters) - Italians Sara Errani and Andrea Vavassori retained their mixed doubles title at the U.S. Open on Wednesday, overcoming Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud 6-3 5-7 10-6 in the competition's reimagined format that drew some of the top singles players. The defending champions, who needed a wild card entry into the competition that prioritised singles rankings, relied on their veteran experience to outfox the Polish-Norwegian duo. The packed house at Arthur Ashe Stadium cheered wildly when Vavassori clinched it with a lethal forehand and hoisted Errani into the air in celebration, as the pair walked away with a $1 million prize. "We are doing something in these two years amazing," said Vavassori, who also won the French Open title with Errani earlier this year. "We showed today that doubles is a great product." Swiatek and Ruud had never played together before this year and at first appeared completely outmatched as the Italians went up 3-0 in the first set. Six-times Grand Slam singles champion Swiatek broke back with a superbly placed volley in the seventh game but that momentum evaporated as her double fault helped the defending champions to another break in the eighth. Vavassori then closed the first set with an unreturnable serve. The Italians went up a break in the second set in the seventh game but Ruud and Swiatek broke back in the 10th and levelled the match when the Pole struck a backhand winner in the 12th. Errani and Vavassori went up 4-0 in the tiebreak and were helped to the finish line after a double fault from Swiatek. "We pushed to the end, we tried to make it competitive," said Swiatek, standing on the same court where she won the U.S. Open singles title three years ago. Organisers have tested a novel format for the competition this year, hosting it during the week before the main singles draw with eight entries based on combined singles rankings of players and eight wild cards. It was an undeniable marketing success with a star-studded lineup that included Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic, but the format rankled some who felt it unfairly excluded veteran doubles players. Hundreds of fans had lined up in the rain outside Arthur Ashe Stadium 90 minutes before the first of two semi-final matches on Wednesday, hardly the crowd one might have expected for the penultimate stage of the mixed doubles in past years. "Playing with all these people is something incredible for us," said Errani. "This one is for all the doubles players who couldn't play this tournament."

Padres smack 4 homers to back JP Sears in win over Giants

August 21 - Gavin Sheets homered twice and JP Sears earned his first win with the San Diego Padres in their 8-1 rout of the visiting San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night. Sears (8-10), making his second start with San Diego after being traded there along with closer Mason Miller at the trade deadline on July 31, gave up only four hits and a run in six innings. Sears walked one and fanned two. Landen Roupp (7-7) absorbed the loss and suffered an injury to boot. Roupp permitted five runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings, walking two and striking out two. He left the game in the bottom of the third after Ramon Laureano smoked a 95.7 mph liner off the back of his left knee. Sheets accounted for half of the Padres offense with two swings. In the second inning, he lined his career-high 16th homer an estimated 369 feet into the seats in right field for a 2-0 lead. When Joey Lucchesi relieved the injured Roupp, Sheets welcomed him by belting a three-run shot just inside the right field foul pole, making it 6-0. It was Sheets' fourth two-homer game in his career and his second of the year. San Diego scored in each of the first three innings, giving Sears plenty of cushion. Ryan O'Hearn initiated the scoring in the first with a two-out RBI single to center that plated Fernando Tatis Jr., who led off with a double. The right fielder Tatis had robbed Rafael Devers of a homer in the top of the inning, lifting his glove a foot or so above the wall to bring back Devers' drive. Manny Machado led off the third with his 21st homer, jumping on a 3-0 pitch from Roupp and ripping it over the left-center field wall. San Francisco got its only run in the fourth when Casey Schmitt lined a homer to left, his eighth of the year. O'Hearn lofted a solo blast to center in the seventh, his 16th of the year and third with the Padres. Tatis capped the scoring in the eighth with a two-out RBI single. --Field Level Media
