Passport Damaged In Probe Agency ED Fire, Maharashtra Minister Allowed To Extend Foreign Trip
Mumbai:
A special court has allowed Maharashtra minister Chhagan Bhujbal and his son Pankaj to extend their international travel, considering that their passports got damaged due to a fire at the Enforcement Directorate's Mumbai office in April.
The father and son, in their pleas seeking extension of travel dates, claimed that the damage necessitated an urgent application for new 'tatkal' passports.
The two, currently on bail in a money laundering case, are required to seek the trial (PMLA) court's permission for foreign travel as per the directives of the Bombay High Court.
On April 29, the special court had allowed their pleas to travel abroad, which also included the return of passports held by the ED.
As per the pleas, the two received their passports on May 13, 2025, only to discover they were 'wet' and 'torn' due to a fire at the ED's Mumbai office on April 27.
A huge fire broke out at the ED's Kaiser-I-Hind building in south Mumbai in the early hours of April 27. It was doused after about a 12-hour operation.
The fire and the resulting damage necessitated urgent applications for new 'tatkal' passports. The delay in obtaining the new passport meant they could only secure their visas on May 22, valid from May 28, 2025, the court was informed.
Consequently, the Bhujbals were unable to commence their journey as originally planned – from May 24, 2025, to June 8, 2025, the pleas said. Their travel commenced on May 28, the court was told.
Citing these unforeseen difficulties, the Bhujbals sought an extension for their travel until June 12, 2025.
The prosecution opposed the application, contending it was likely that Bhujbal would abscond and delay the trial.
In his order of June 2, SR Navander, the special judge for cases under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA), noted that the accused had already been permitted to travel abroad.
Acknowledging that their passports were damaged in ED's custody, the court allowed the pleas for extension of travel dates.
NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal was sworn in as a minister in the Maharashtra government on May 20.

Robert Vadra seeks new date to appear before ED in Gurugram land deal case: Report
Businessman Robert Vadra reportedly sought a new date from the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to appear before the financial probe agency in connection with the Gurugram land deal case. Vadra, the husband of Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi, was summoned by the Enforcement Directorate on Tuesday. He, however, has "informed the central agency that he would not appear today and sought a fresh date," sources told news agency ANI. Vadra had earlier appeared before the Enforcement Directorate on April 17 — the third straight day — for questioning in a money laundering case linked to alleged irregularities in a 2008 Haryana land deal case. The Enforcement Directorate's probe involves properties in London and financial transactions during the UPA regime (2004–2014). The central agency alleged Vadra's involvement with Sanjay Bhandari through the London property, financial transactions, and personal associations, supported by email trails and Thampi's role, News 18 reported. Bhandari is allegedly a close aide of Vadra and had fled India in 2016. He is currently living in the United Kingdom. On April 17, after the Enforcement Directorate interrogated him on Thursday in connection with the Gurugram land case, businessman Robert Vadra said that the investigative agency was asking him repeated questions that he had already answered in 2019. "There was no new question; all the questions were repeated from 2019. If tomorrow were not a public holiday, I would have to celebrate my birthday in the ED office. "Tomorrow is Good Friday, and I will celebrate my birthday with my family; otherwise, they will keep calling me," Vadra told the media. Vadra slammed the action as a "political vendetta", accusing the government of misusing investigative agencies to target opposition voices. Vadra questioned the ED's impartiality, alleging selective action against leaders from non-BJP parties while vowing to continue his fight against "injustice". "This is a political vendetta. Agencies are being misused. This is wrong. How will there be trust in agencies when they are after any candidates for the CM position in the country, or when a party is doing well? Which BJP minister or member has been summoned by the ED? Why has none of them been summoned? Is everyone in the BJP good? Do they not have any allegations against them? "There are several allegations," Vadra said. Vadra also claimed that the ED's action against him was fueled when he started raising his voice over atrocities against minorities. "If I were to enter politics, which is what everyone wants, they (the BJP) would either speak of dynasty or misuse ED. This difficulty started when, a few days back, I gave messages through social media regarding atrocities against minorities. This is nothing else. Ever since I said that people wanted me to enter politics, this difficulty has started. But the ED summons has no basis," he said.

Robert Vadra skips ED summons, asks for another date
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) asked Congress leader Sonia Gandhi's son-in-law Robert Vadra to appear before it on Tuesday in connection with a money laundering probe linked to fugitive arms dealer Sanjay Bhandari, but the businessman sought another date for questioning, people familiar with the development said. Bhandari, 61, is under investigation by multiple agencies, including ED, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), the Income Tax department and the Delhi Police, for money-laundering, violation of foreign exchange as well as black money laws, and the Official Secrets Act for having access to sensitive defence documents. The Indian government sent two extradition requests against the fugitive businessman which were certified by the then UK home secretary Priti Patel in June 2020, after which British authorities arrested him on July 15, 2020. However, on February 28 this year, a King's bench division at the UK high court allowed Bhandari's plea against his extradition to India, primarily on the grounds that he would be at real risk of extortion, torture or violence in Tihar jail, from other prisoners or prison officials, which means his extradition to India is now not possible. 'We had summoned Vadra on Tuesday, but he sought adjournment and sought a next date. We will decide the next date soon,' said an officer. The federal agency has claimed that one of the properties at 12, Bryanston Square, London, acquired by Bhandari in 2009, is linked to Vadra, as it was 'renovated' on his directions and using his funds. The agency has also claimed that Vadra has stayed in this property 'three-four times'. The second property under the scanner is located at 6, Grosvenor Hill Court, 13 Bourdon Street in London. Both are being treated as 'proceeds of crime' of Bhandari and NRI businessman C C Thampi under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). In a charge sheet filed in November 2023, ED had alleged that Vadra and his wife Priyanka Gandhi Vadra bought land in Haryana through a Delhi-based real estate agent who also sold land to Thampi, while adding that Vadra and Thampi have a 'long and thick' relationship that extends to 'common and business interests'. Earlier, in April this year, ED questioned Vadra in connection with a separate probe related to a 2008 land deal in Gurugram's Shikohpur. HT reached out to Vadra on Tuesday for a comment but there was no response. The copy will be updated whenever it is received.
