IAS coach faces legal action over ‘defamatory' remark against judiciary
The court presided over by Manmohan Chandel Tuesday charged Divyakirti under multiple subsections of Section 356 of the BNS Act 2023. Divyakirti has been directed to appear in person before the court on July 22.
A petition filed in the court refers to controversial statements made by Divyakirti in a YouTube video titled "IAS versus Judge, who is powerful," where he allegedly made inappropriate comments about the process of becoming a high court or a Supreme Court judge.
The complainant, advocate Kamlesh Manowliya, presented social media clips where Divyakirti discussed "jugaad" (informal arrangements) in relation to judicial appointments and the collegium system.
The court was told that in the controversial video, Divyakirti allegedly claimed that files of potential judges could be delayed through govt red tape, even after collegium approval. He also allegedly made controversial comparisons between the powers of district judges and district magistrates, suggesting that judicial power is dependent on police cooperation. The complainant's legal team, including advocates Ashok Singh Rawat, Rajkumar Rawat and Rajesh Bhati, argued that such statements damage the judiciary's image.

Rahul Gandhi accused of making false statements in Savarkar defamation proceedings
A perjury application has been filed in the Special MP/MLA Court in Pune against Congress MP and Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, accusing him of misleading the court in a defamation case over his remarks on Vinayak Damodar 'Veer' Savarkar, made in London. The application has been filed by Satyaki Savarkar, the grandnephew of Veer Savarkar, through advocate Sangram Kolhatkar. It alleges that Mr. Gandhi falsely claimed in a 15-page pursis, or statement to the court, on July 29 that he had not received the defamatory video which forms the crux of the complaint. The plea states that Mr. Gandhi's advocate had acknowledged receipt of the documents, including a CD containing the speech, on May 9. Pen drives and CDs According to the application, Mr. Gandhi also admitted in his reply to having received a pen drive containing the video uploaded on YouTube but claimed that it was non-functional. A new pen drive was later provided and operated in court in the presence of his advocate. The application says that Mr. Gandhi still alleged non-receipt and filed a 'false pursis.' It further points to another application filed by Mr. Gandhi's advocate on May 28, admitting receipt of the pen drive but refusing to operate it, citing possible malware. The pen drive is currently in Court custody. The plea terms these actions a 'deliberate and malicious attempt to deceive, mislead, and make false statements before the court', arguing that such conduct from a constitutional office-holder is 'serious and unbecoming'. Unnecessary delays Speaking to The Hindu, the advocate Mr. Kolhatkar said, 'Multiple times we have handed him over the speech document, we even provided him the link, transcript of the entire speech that was around 17 minutes long. We have also submitted news reports of the speech. We believe they must have misplaced them again and again because they keep saying they cannot access the CD, then when we gave them the file in a new pen drive, they said it was corrupt, then another fresh pen drive was provided to them and this time they said the pen drive might contain malware and may damage their computer system.' He added, 'For so long, we have ignored each and every criticism but now enough is enough. We are compelled to file the perjury because we are fed up with their excuses. We want a fair trial. The case is going on since 2023 and the trial has not even started. So much time and money has been wasted, including the court's time.' Milind Dattatraya Pawar, the advocate representing Rahul Gandhi, countered, 'None of the files in the form of CD and pen drives provided by Satyaki Savarkar works. They provided us the copy of the London speech in a CD which has never worked. The pen drives too do not work. We will file our reply on September 10.' The court is scheduled to hear the matter on September 10, 2025.

I won't go to jail by denotifying land for Peripheral Ring Road-2 project in Bengaluru: DK Shivakumar
Bengaluru: Ruling out denotification of land notified for Peripheral Ring Road-2 (PRR-2) project, the govt Thursday said the 52-km stretch connecting Hosur Road with Mysuru Road will be implemented. The govt issued a primary notification for 2,716 acres of land in 2005-06, of which a final notification was issued for executing the Major Arterial Road (MAR) between Magadi Road and Mysuru Road, which forms part of PRR-2 alignment. The MAR stretch of over 10.7km is in advanced stages of completion. Replying to a question raised by BJP MLC HS Gopinath in the legislative council, deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar said there is no question of denotifying the land and the project will be implemented. Shivakumar said, "Though the primary notification was issued in 2005-06, successive govts did not issue a final notification for acquisition of land nor sanctioned the plan. I am not ready to denotify the land and go to jail. This is also the govt's stand." Shivakumar said wherever residential structures have come up along the alignment, flyovers will be built to avoid land acquisition. Six cases booked over provocative SM posts
Mangaluru: Dakshina Kannada district police registered six separate cases in two days against individuals accused of posting derogatory, obscene, and inflammatory content on social media platforms. The complaints, lodged at Belthangady and Venur police stations on Tuesday and Wednesday, allege that the accused targeted religious communities, posted obscene remarks, incited violence, and promoted caste-based enmity through Facebook and YouTube. In one case, Ajith Nagappa Basapur,32, of Chabbi village, Hubballi, alleged that activist Girish Mattennavar of Ujire, Belthangady, made insulting remarks about the Jain religion and its followers during an interview with the 'Kudla Rampage' YouTube channel. The channel's owner allegedly uploaded the video, hurting the religious sentiments of Jains. Belthangady police booked the duo under Sections 196(1)(A) and 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. In another complaint, Vijaya,41, of Belthangady, said she found an obscene post related to the Sowjanya case on a Facebook account named 'Vikas Vicky Hindu.' Venur police registered a case under Section 296 of BNS. Similarly, Dhananjay Jain,47, of Belthangady, alleged that a Facebook account titled 'Enri Gowdre' posted obscene messages. Venur police booked the case under Section 296 of BNS. On Aug 13, Prabhakar Gowda,51, of Belthangady, alleged that a Facebook user, "Lawyer Jagadeesh," posted a video related to the ongoing exhumation work in Dharmasthala, as part of the alleged mass burial case, allegedly inciting the public to commit offences by promoting unlawful assembly and use of deadly weapons. Belthangady police registered a case under Section 57 read with Sections 189(6) and 191(3) of BNS. In another case, the same complainant alleged that Lokesh Poojary posted messages on Facebook about Koti Chennaya, which could incite caste-based enmity and spread false rumours. Police booked the case under Section 353(2) of BNS at the Belthangady police station . In another case, Uday Poojary, 41, of Belthangady, alleged that Naveen Jain uploaded videos on YouTube, encouraging people to unlawfully assemble and commit offences that could disturb public peace. A case was registered under Section 57 read with Sections 189 and 190 of BNS at the Belthangady police station. Police said investigations are ongoing in all six cases.
