This morning, the Astros announced that they are placing McCullers on the 15-day IL for a right finger blister, making him the 17th Astros player on the IL and the seventh starting pitcher. The team called up Nick Hernandez from Triple-A to take his roster spot.
He joins Spencer Arrighetti, Ronel Blanco, J.P. France, Luis Garcia, Cristian Javier and Hayden Wesneski on the IL of the most injury-ridden rotation in baseball.
Since his debut over 10 years ago, McCullers has had more than 20 starts four times in his career, hitting the 25 mark twice. He has also spent three seasons on the sidelines dealing with multiple different surgeries, including Tommy John.
McCullers started the 2025 season on the IL with a right foot strain, having not pitched since the 2022 World Series, and made his first start for the Astros on May 4th.
He is coming off an outing just a few days ago on July 19th where he went 2.2 innings in the Astros 7-6 loss to the Mariners, allowing four runs on five hits, moving his season ERA up to 6.90 in 11 starts.
With McCullers down again, that leaves just Hunter Brown and Framber Valdez to lead the rotation as the only non-rookies. Behind them, the team will have to continue to rely on guys like Ryan Gusto, Colton Gordon and Brandon Walters.

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Kevin Newman, Taylor Ward and Luis Rengifo homered to help the Los Angeles Angels beat Texas 6-4 on Monday night, snapping the Rangers' six-game win streak. Kenley Jansen pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning for his 19th save. The 37-year-old Jansen hasn't allowed an earned run in 16 consecutive appearances, the longest active streak in the American League and the third-longest of his career. Jacob deGrom (10-3), who was 6-0 in his previous 10 starts, gave up five runs and seven hits with eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. The two-time NL Cy Young Award winner has allowed at least one home run in five consecutive games in the same season for the first time in his 12-year career. Ward's leadoff homer in the sixth gave the Angels the lead for good, and Rengifo added a two-run drive off reliever Jacob Webb to make it 6-3. The Angels, who beat Seattle 4-1 on Sunday, have won back-to-back games for the first time since defeating Arizona on July 11 and 12. Patrick Corbin (6-7, 3.78 ERA) is scheduled to pitch for Texas on Tuesday against Yusei Kikuchi (4-7, 3.23) in the middle game of the series.

Sean Payton: Dre Greenlaw plays like Mike Tyson
Linebacker Dre Greenlaw made the most of the first day in pads at Broncos training camp. Greenlaw filled gaps and delivered hits throughout team drills in Denver and head coach Sean Payton said you didn't even have to be watching to know that Greenlaw was the one landing blows. Payton said "you can hear it" when Greenlaw makes a hit and then went on to compare his style to another knockout artist from a different sport. "He plays like Mike Tyson," Payton said, via the team's website. "He's tough, he's physical. He's built that way. There's not a lot of leaky yardage. Some guys [allow that]. He's a knock-back tackler. They stop where he hits them. There's an intensity to how he plays. He's one of those players that if you put the film on and didn't say anything, at some point early, you'd ask, 'Who is this guy?'" Greenlaw was limited to two games for the 49ers last year because of injuries and a quad injury interrupted his first offseason in Denver, so one key for the Broncos will be making sure Greenlaw's healthy enough to deploy that physicality on a regular basis. If he is, facing an already tough Broncos defense will be even less enjoyable for opposing offenses in 2025.

Commanders put OL Nate Herbig on reserve/retired list
Veteran offensive lineman Nate Herbig is walking away from football. Herbig signed with the Commanders this offseason, but the team announced on Tuesday morning that he has been placed on the team's reserve/retired list. He will no longer count against the team's 90-man roster limit. Herbig spent the last two seasons with the Steelers, but did not play at all in 2024 after a rotator cuff injury. Herbig appeared in 17 games for the Steelers in 2023 and he started 11 games at guard for the Jets in 2022. The Eagles signed Herbig as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and he started 17 of the 33 games he played while with Philadelphia. Nick Allegretti and Chris Paul remain on hand as depth options at guard in Washington.
