Boy killed in cylinder blast; CM announces 5 lakh compensation
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announced after visiting the blast spot and hospitals that Rs 5 lakh compensation will be given to the family of the deceased.
'And the medical expenses of those injured will be borne by the government," he added.
The victim was identified as Mubarak.
The incident happened at Chinnayanpalya of Wilson Garden, Central Bengaluru, a tightly packed predominantly residential neighbourhood where houses abut each other.
After visiting the site, Siddaramaiah told the reporters that prima facie, a cylinder blast was the cause for the incident.
'There is no smell, but according to police and Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike reports, a cylinder blast might have taken place," he said.
He further said nine people were injured, and that Mubarak was declared dead at the Sanjay Gandhi Hospital. Officials had earlier said 12 persons sustained injuries in the blast.
The house where the blast occurred belongs to one Kasturamma, who is also admitted in hospital with burn injuries, added the CM.
According to him, 13 houses have been damaged.
'I have instructed the BBMP Commissioner to get the houses repaired. If the house has collapsed completely, we will get them constructed," he added.
Earlier, speaking to reporters, City Police Commissioner, Seemanth Kumar Singh said the house in which the blast occurred, was being rented by a three-member family.
'The man works as a labourer and had left for work early in the morning as usual. The mother and the child at home were injured. But the boy who died was in a neighbouring house," said Kumar.
He said the police control room received the call around 8.30am.
'We immediately informed the Bomb Disposal Squad, Anti-Terrorism Squad, State Disaster Response Force, Fire Brigade as well as the local police," Singh added.
'We are clearing the houses that are damaged, investigation is on." It was too early to say what exactly caused the blast, said Kumar. PTI JR SA

London School of Economics graduate among 3 arrested in Delhi cyber-extortion case
Three men, including a 31-year-old graduate of the London School of Economics, were arrested in Delhi on Thursday for allegedly attempting to extort Rs 2 crore from a businessman by using the name of a notorious gangster, the police said. The case began on August 11, when the complainant reported receiving an international WhatsApp call from an unknown number. The caller, identifying himself with the gangster's name, threatened to kill the complainant's children if the money was not paid. A QR code for cryptocurrency transfer was also sent as part of the extortion attempt, the police said. A case under Section 308(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita was registered at the Desh Bandhu Gupta Road police station. The cybercrime unit, working with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre of the Ministry of Home Affairs, traced the call and the QR code. Investigators said the cryptocurrency trail led to Thailand, where the accused had purchased an international SIM card in an effort to disguise their location. 'Simultaneously the field level surveillance team kept a close watch on the suspects' addresses in India. Once the suspects landed back in India, they were immediately apprehended,' said Nidhin Valsan, deputy commissioner of police for the Central district. 'During interrogation, the accused persons revealed that all three of them were heavily debt-ridden, and to pay off their debts in an easy way, they chose this extortion plot. One of the accused, Sumit, who works in the jewellery business, was well acquainted with the complainant and his family. To instil fear, they used the name of a well-known gangster.' The men were identified as Sumit, 42, a commerce graduate from West Punjabi Bagh; Prince, 35, a school dropout from Roshanara Road; and Nitish, 31, a master's degree holder in software management from the London School of Economics who resides in Moti Nagar. Police said they recovered two mobile phones: one used to generate the cryptocurrency QR code and another to place the international WhatsApp call. The police added that the three conspired in India but travelled to Thailand to avoid detection before placing the extortion calls.

Hit & run off Neendakara: Flees after crashing into fishing boat off Kollam
KOCHI: Fort Kochi coastal police have registered a case against the captain in-charge of a ship which collided with a fishing boat near Neendakara Harbour and fled from the scene without attempting to rescue the fishermen on board. The incident occurred approximately 20 nautical miles off Neendakara coast. Following the incident, MMS 6N CR TETHYS, a chemical and oil products tanker, has been booked under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for rash navigation of a vessel and acts endangering human life. 'The collision took place when the boat was engaged in fishing. All six fishermen on board were thrown into the sea. Fortunately, they swam to safety,' said Sangeeth Job, SHO, Fort Kochi coastal police station. According to the complaint, the incident happened around 6.15 pm on Thursday. The tanker, travelling at high speed through the Arabian Sea, hit the rear side of the fishing boat named 'Nisniya'. The impact caused serious injuries to two fishermen and completely damaged the boat's rear section, resulting in an estimated financial loss of over Rs 30 lakh.

25-year-old kidnapped, robbed day before wedding in Karnataka
BENGALURU: A 25-year-old man from Mandya who had come to the city to invite his friends and relatives for his wedding, which is on August 17, was kidnapped and robbed by four carborne miscreants around 2 pm. The incident happened on the Shikaripalya Road near Jigani Industrial Area. The accused had escaped with his gold ornaments and cash, all worth around Rs 2.5 lakhs. The Hebbagodi police have registered a case. The victim, Kumar (name changed), who is into farming, hails from Malavalli taluk in Mandya. While Kumar was on his way to Banashankari, where his sister lives, on a bike with his friend, the accused hit the bike with the car and got into a fight. The accused started beating both of them. Two of the four accused threatened Kumar and initially took him on their bike. 'The gang, after beating Kumar's friend, left him alone. The accused, who first took Kumar on his bike around 2 pm, later pulled him inside their car and robbed him of his gold ornaments and Rs 40,000 in cash. They also took his phone number and made him transfer Rs 10,700 through UPI. On the way, the accused abandoned the victim's bike. They have also attacked him with an iron rod. The accused dropped Kumar at a deserted place around 5.30 pm on the Harohalli Road,' said an officer based on the victim's complaint.
