SA and NZ set to write another chapter in special rugby rivalry
The Junior Boks during their World Rugby U20 Championship semifinal win over Argentina in Italy on Monday night. Picture: Emmanuele Ciancaglini/The rugby rivalry between South Africa and New Zealand will enter another chapter on Saturday when the Junior Springboks face the Junior All Blacks in the final of the 2025 World Rugby U20 Championship in Rovigo, Italy.
The Junior Boks qualified for their first final appearance since 2014 when they defeated Argentina Monday evening in Viadana, while New Zealand beat France in their semi-final played earlier in the day at the same venue.
Junior Springbok head coach Kevin Foote spoke of the significance of the occasion set to happen on Saturday, highlighting the rivalry and rugby culture shared by both nations.
'Every child in South Africa and every child in New Zealand who has ever picked up a rugby ball dreams of this occasion. It's a special moment, and they (NZ) are a special side. A final between these two teams is fantastic for the game of rugby,' said Foote.
Junior Bok captain Riley Norton echoed his coach's sentiments, calling the final the 'ultimate test' for the South African U20 side.
No extra motivation
'You don't need any extra motivation for a final like this. As coach Kevin said, you dream of a match like this. Facing the haka on Saturday, the history and tradition of rugby between SA and NZ is just unbelievable,' explained Norton.
'We love playing each other and have great respect for one another. It's going to be an 80-minute battle. We're extremely excited for Saturday, and I know the guys are up for it and very keen.'
While the SA U20s are excited for the final, Foote emphasised that the Junior Boks remain focused on growth and continuous improvement: 'We'll keep improving, and the thing is that we've played some awesome rugby in this tournament. I couldn't be prouder of this group.
'I told them in the changeroom (after the Argentina victory) how proud I am, to be on this journey with them is very special. They are absolute warriors and remain humble.'
The Junior Boks enjoyed a non-training on Tuesday to recover from their energy-sapping semi-final against Argentina and will resume preparations on Wednesday at their base in Valpolicella outside Verona.
The matchday squad to face New Zealand will be announced on Thursday afternoon. Saturday's final marks the first time the two sides meet in a World Rugby U20 Championship final since South Africa's memorable victory over New Zealand in the 2012 sold-out final at Newlands in Cape Town.

BREAKING: Springboks announce squad for Rugby Championship tests vs Australia
The World Champion Springboks have announced a 37-man squad to face the Wallabies over two tests in the Rugby Championship. South Africa faces Australia on Saturday, 16 August at Ellis Park. The sides meet again on Saturday, 23 August at Cape Town Stadium. The Springboks have released their 37-man squad to tackle the Wallabies. Do you see any weaknesses? Coach Rassie Erasmus was effusive in his praise of the Junior Springboks. Three of them will train with the senior side. 'We are tremendously proud of the Junior Springboks for winning the World Rugby U20 Championship, and we were thrilled to see the talent coming through the junior ranks, so we opted to invite three of them to join us to expose them to our structures and the standards required at top international level. 'We believe this camp will benefit them significantly, and we are excited to see how they slot in and train with us. 'Unfortunately, we had to limit the size of the squad to ensure maximum outputs and more individual attention at our training sessions, so although more players could have been invited, we could only select three.' Kaizer Chiefs strongest XI with new signings this season
Kaizer Chiefs will open their 2025/26 Betway Premiership season against Stellenbosch on 10 August. Having returned from their pre-season in the Netherlands, Amakhosi have just over two weeks to prepare for the big clash. Unfortunately for them, they won't feature in the MTN8 competition after failing to finish in the top 8 last season. This weekend, they will play Asante Kotoko of Ghana in the Toyota Cup in Durban, where supporters will see new players in action for the first time on South African soil. Goalkeeper: Brandon Petersen The experienced keeper appears to be Nabi's first-choice keeper this season. His leadership has been vital, especially in the final of the Nedbank Cup, where Amakhosi were victorious. Defenders: Reeve Frosler (RB) The experienced defender is more likely to be Kaizer Chiefs' first choice as opposed to new signing Thabiso Monyane. Dillan Solomons could also be used as a sub rather than a starter. Miguel Inacio (CB) Miguel is set to be the new Amakhosi captain with the departure of Yusuf Maart. He has looked solid in big games, but his disciplinary record has to improve. On his day, the Angolan international is one of the best defenders in the PSL. Aden McCarthy (CB) The young centre-back who impressed during pre-season in the Netherlands. He has become a new favourite and expect him to bench Given Msimango when in the opening matches. With regular centre-back Rushwin Dortley still not fit, McCarthy will no doubt be Miguel's defensive partner. Bradley Cross (LB) Bradley Cross is more likely to start ahead of Nkanyiso Shinga at left-back. Shinga has looked vulnerable and it's more likely that Nasreddine Nabi will opt for Cross in the opening matches. Paseka Mako could be an option when he recovers from injury. Midfielders: Thabo Cele (CM) Thabo Cele is no doubt Kaizer Chiefs' best player. Since his arrival, he had looked like the leader the club needs. During pre-season, he was far the best player and looks like he is getting more comfortable in the midfield role alongside Sibongiseni Mthethwa. Nkosingiphile Ngcobo (AM) Ngcobo has excelled this pre-season and looks like a different player. If he can carry the form that he showed in Holland, he will be an asset for Amakhosi this season. Siphesihle Ndlovu (DM) He might be one of Kaizer Chiefs' surprise signings. Ex-player Reneilwe Letsholonyane has praised the former SuperSport United midfielder, saying he is the kind of player who will fight for every ball and show commitment. Forwards: Makabi Lilepo (LW) The Congolese attacker is one of the few standout players from last season. He will no doubt start most of Amakhosi's matches but it remains to be seen if he will show the same explosiveness he showed in his first three months at the club. Pule Mmodi (RW) Mmodi has been hot and cold for Kaizer Chiefs and perhaps this could finally be his season where he impresses. Flavio Silva (Str) Nabi has always preferred to have a target man, hence he signed Silva. If the 29-year-old striker can find form early in the season, Amakhosi could play him upfront while Lilepo, Mmodi and Ngcobo provide. Rassie Erasmus involves Junior Bok stars in Springboks' preparations for Wallabies Tests
Junior Springboks star Bathobele Hlekani will get an opportunity to train with the Springboks ahead of the Rugby Championship Tests against Australia. Springbok coach Rassie Erasmus has selected a strong 37-man squad for the first two Tests in the Rugby Championship against Australia, featuring 24 World Cup-winners and five players who made their Test debuts during the recent matches against Italy and Georgia. The Bok coach also invited three young guns, who were members of the triumphant Junior Springbok World Rugby U20 Championship squad – Bathobele Hlekani, Cheswill Jooste, and Haashim Pead – to train with the group during their two-week conditioning camp in Johannesburg starting on Sunday 27 July, to orientate them into the Springbok culture. The five players who earned their first Springbok Test caps in July are Ethan Hooker (utility back), Asenathi Ntlabakanye, Boan Venter (both props), Marnus van der Merwe (hooker), and Cobus Wiese (utility forward). Bath prop Thomas du Toit has been granted a compulsory two-week rest as agreed with the Gallagher Premiership, although he is eligible to be called up at any stage should the need arise, while No 8 Jasper Wiese is currently serving a four-week suspension, ruling him out of this squad.
