Oscar Piastri, F1 leader with 284 points, will race past his grandstand at the 2026 Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, ahead of Lando Norris and Max Verstappen.
Formula 1 championship leader Oscar Piastri will have the opportunity to race past his own grandstand at next year's Australian Grand Prix, held at Melbourne's Albert Park.
Late Monday, the Australian GP announced that the Piastri Grandstand would be situated on the main straight, opposite pit lane.
The 24-year-old Piastri, who was born and raised in Melbourne, currently leads the F1 championship with 14 of the 24 races completed. He finished second to his McLaren teammate Lando Norris at the Hungarian Grand Prix on August 3.
Piastri will join the ranks of other Australian drivers who have grandstands named after them, including Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Daniel Ricciardo, and Mark Webber.
'It feels very surreal, and I never thought this would happen but the support is incredible and I can't wait to see it all come together next March," Piastri said. 'Seeing all the fans in my own grandstand directly opposite the McLaren garage is going to be an amazing experience and I'm really looking forward to feeling the energy and the atmosphere."
Piastri leads the F1 standings with 284 points, having secured 12 podium finishes this season. He is followed by Norris with 275 points and the same number of podiums. Defending champion Max Verstappen is third with 187 points for Red Bull, George Russell in his Mercedes is fourth with 172 points, and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc rounds out the top five with 151 points.
The Australian GP will take place on March 8, 2026.

Malaysia rules out Formula One return eight years since last race at Sepang

The Malaysian Grand Prix had made its debut in 1999 at its Sepang International Circuit, with the last race held there in 2017. The Southeast Asian nation dropped out of the F1 calendar in 2018 amid rising costs of hosting the prestigious event. Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher steers her Mercedes car down the finishing straight at the Sepang International Circuit during the qualifying session for the Malaysian Grand Prix in 2012. Reuters Malaysia on Thursday ruled out Formula One returning to the country in the near future, citing costs and an already packed racing calendar. The Southeast Asian nation first hosted an F1 race in 1999 at its Sepang International Circuit, with the last grand prix held there in 2017. Malaysia dropped out of the F1 calendar from 2018 amid the rising costs of hosting the event. Sepang still annually stages MotoGP motorbike racing. Sports minister Hannah Yeoh said hosting F1 again would require the Malaysian government to pay about 300 million ringgit ($71.09 million) annually. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Beyond hosting rights, Yeoh said the circuit requires about 10 million ringgit a year to maintain to the required standards for top-level motor racing. 'Malaysia must also bind itself to a contract of between three to five years with Liberty Media (which holds F1's commercial rights), amounting to a commitment of about 1.5 billion ringgit during this period,' she told parliament on Thursday. 'The current race calendar is very tight and if Malaysia is interested in hosting again, we will have to compete with other countries for a place on the calendar,' she added. In the region, Singapore stages a night race and Thailand hopes to become the latest host. The Thai cabinet in June approved a $1.2 billion bid to stage F1 on the streets of Bangkok from 2028. Yeoh said Malaysia is not shutting the door completely on having F1 races again, if any corporate entities were willing to shoulder the costs. 'We are open to this and can cooperate,' she added. 'The Formula 1 is a very prestigious sporting event that is followed by many fans around the world. 'So if we could afford it, it's a good-to-have event in Malaysia.'
