Britain will lower its voting age to 16 in bid to strengthen democracy

News185 days ago
London, Jul 17 (AP) Britain will lower the voting age from 18 to 16 before the next national election as part of measures to increase democratic participation, the government announced Thursday.
The centre-left Labour Party pledged before it was elected in July 2024 to lower the voting age for elections to Britain's Parliament. Scotland and Wales already let 16 and 17-year-olds vote in local and regional elections.
Britain will join the short list of countries where the voting age is 16, alongside the likes of Ecuador, Austria and Brazil.
The move comes alongside wider reforms that include tightening campaign financing rules to stop shell companies with murky ownership from donating to political parties. Democracy Minister Rushanara Ali said the change would strengthen safeguards against foreign interference in British politics.
The government also said it will introduce automatic voter registration and allow voters to use bank cards as a form of identification at polling stations.
The previous Conservative government introduced a requirement for voters to show photo identification in 2022, a measure it said would combat fraud. Critics argued it could disenfranchise millions of voters, particularly the young, the poor and members of ethnic minorities.
Elections watchdog the Electoral Commission has estimated that about 750,000 people did not vote in last year's election because they lacked ID.
Turnout in the 2024 election was 59.7 per cent, the lowest level in more than two decades.
Harry Quilter-Pinner, head of left-leaning think tank the Institute for Public Policy Research, said the changes were 'the biggest reform to our electoral system since 1969," when the voting age was lowered to 18 from 21.
The changes must be approved by Parliament. The next national election must be held by 2029.
'For too long public trust in our democracy has been damaged and faith in our institutions has been allowed to decline," Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner said. 'We are taking action to break down barriers to participation that will ensure more people have the opportunity to engage in UK democracy." (AP) SKS RD RD

Ghislaine Maxwell's photo from Chelsea Clinton's wedding resurfaces as Trump-Epstein videos go viral

However, the photo became infamous after it was noticed that Ghislaine Maxwell was among those in the audience as Bill Clinton and Chelsea walked down the aisle. Former First Lady Hilary Clinton was also in attendance, but the photo does not capture her. Chelsea Clinton married Marc Mezvinsky, an investment banker, in a private inter-faith ceremony. Here's the photo: Despite some claims that the photo is doctored, it is a real photo, taken by Genevieve de Manio for Getty Images. The fact that Epstein was in attendance as Trump and Maples tied the knot was not a widely known fact. Additionally, CNN looked into footage of Trump's public appearances in in the 1990s and found a footage of him with Epstein at the 1999 Victoria's Secret fashion show. The CNN photos came on the back of Wall Street Journal Publishing a letter that Trump wrote to Epstein on the latter's 50th birthday. Described as "bawdy," the letter contained a birthday wish in typewritten text inside the background of a naked woman drawn with a marker. Trump's signature was in place of the pubic hair of the figure. Trump, however, has dismissed both reports as "fake news."

Modi, who annoiunced the Free Trade Agreement on social media, said he is looking forward to welcoming Starmer to India. Reuters The Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved the India–UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA), just days before Prime Minister Narendra Modi's scheduled visit to the United Kingdom, where he is expected to formally sign the deal with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on June 24. Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal will also accompany him for the great milestone completion. Although the agreement was announced on May 6, the full text was held back pending final legal review. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The trade pact, however, will only take effect once it is ratified by the British Parliament. PM Modi's trip includes a four-day visit to the UK and the Maldives, beginning Wednesday. The deal comes after years of political upheaval in the UK, which saw three different Prime Ministers before the Labour Party returned to power with a strong majority. This marks India's first major trade deal with a Western nation since it opted out of the China-led RCEP in 2019. The agreement is set to boost access for Indian exports, especially in textiles and leather, while also addressing concerns over the UK's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) that could impact India's metal exports. In return, India will allow phased entry of high-end British cars and whisky. The Commerce Ministry said the FTA covers almost all of India's export interests, with tariffs eliminated on about 99% of trade lines, representing nearly the entire trade value. It aims to strengthen ties between India's and the UK's advanced services sectors. The pact includes chapters on trade in goods and services, innovation, intellectual property, government procurement, and also finalizes a social security agreement between the two countries.

Obama office rejects Trump's 'treason' charge as weak distraction attempt

Former US President Barack Obama has denied allegations by the Trump administration that he manipulated intelligence related to Russian interference in the 2016 election, calling the claims "bizarre" and "a weak attempt at distraction," The Hill reported. "These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction," Patrick Rodenbush, a spokesperson for Obama, said in a statement sent to NewsNation, The Hill's sister company. "Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes. These findings were affirmed in a 2020 report by the bipartisan Senate Intelligence Committee, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio," he added, according to The Hill. The Hill reported that Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard issued a report last Friday detailing the alleged election fraud, stating that officials involved were engaged in a "treasonous conspiracy." Gabbard also stated that her office was turning over evidence to the Justice Department for possible criminal referrals, with the support of President Donald Trump. "He's guilty, it's not a question," Trump told reporters referring to Obama. "This was treason, this was every word you can think of," The Hill quoted him as saying. Trump also claimed that several former top officials, including then-Vice President Joe Biden, former FBI director James Comey, former DNI director James Clapper and former CIA director John Brennan, could face criminal charges, The Hill reported. The allegations stem from a recent memo Trump issued in March, directing the declassification of all files related to "Crossfire Hurricane," the FBI's codename for the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. The Hill further noted that Trump has consistently denied that Russia had any influence on his 2016 campaign victory over Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton. Meanwhile, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) and the Clinton campaign were fined by the Federal Election Commission (FEC) for failing to disclose spending on the investigation into Trump's alleged ties to Russia. According to a letter sent by the FEC, the DNC was fined $105,000 and the Clinton campaign was fined $8,000. The investigation was led by law firm Perkins Coie, which used research from Fusion GPS. The firm later hired retired British spy Christopher Steele to probe foreign involvement in the US election, The Hill reported.
