TCS splits AI.Cloud unit for higher growth, Krishna Mohan to lead cloud biz

TCS, the country's biggest IT services provider by market capitalisation, has reorganised its AI.Cloud division into two distinct business units as the company aims for higher growth in the artificial intelligence cloud business, a senior company official said.
TCS established its AI.Cloud unit in August 2023 to unlock greater business value by harnessing the power of cloud and generative AI (GenAI).
Siva Ganesan, now leading the newly formed AI.Cloud unit, remarked, "AI is getting more pervasive by the day and featuring in every conversation now," adding that this trend is expected to "get bigger and more intense as we go ahead."
Krishna Mohan, formerly the deputy head of the AI.Cloud unit, will now lead the cloud division. Meanwhile, Ashok Krish has been named the global head of AI, and Satish Byravan will serve as the global head of Data.
In what's seen as a strategic move to harness the potential of artificial intelligence (AI), the Tata Group company has established a dedicated unit for AI and another for cloud services, according to senior executives.
Ganesan told PTI, "For us, the volume and the vibrancy of activity we are seeing in the AI and data space has grown many fold in the last 12 months." He did not disclose specific figures, as TCS does not report separate revenue for AI. He explained the unit will act as a "central unit, a repository of all AI things."
Executives highlighted that both AI and cloud have substantial growth prospects and largely untapped markets, justifying the creation of distinct business units.
The company is actively hiring AI experts from the market while also enhancing internal capabilities by updating training programmes for existing employees.
One official elaborated that the AI unit also encompasses data because of their close connection. In instances where clients' data infrastructure isn't yet AI-ready, TCS can offer comprehensive solutions combining AI and data services.

Indore Metro begins commercial operation

Indore Metro commenced commercial operations on Sunday, marking a transformative step in the city's urban transportation landscape. While the initial hours saw a relatively low passenger turnout, riders steadily increased by noon, Metro officials reported and said despite the introduction of fares, public enthusiasm remained strong, with expectations of further growth in commuter numbers by evening. Currently, Indore Metro lacks an automated ticketing system, requiring manual compilation of ticket sales and passenger data. Authorities are working toward implementing a streamlined digital system, but for now, ticketing operations continue to be handled manually. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had inaugurated the first phase of the Indore Metro project on May 31, 2025, via video link from Bhopal. The launch coincided with the 300th birth anniversary celebrations of Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar – the revered ruler of Malwa, where the Prime Minister addressed the 'Women Empowerment Mega Conference". During his speech, PM Modi highlighted Indore's global reputation for cleanliness and expressed confidence that the city would now also be recognized for its metro connectivity. The metro's initial operational plan included 50 trips per day, metro authorities said. However, due to the overwhelming response to free travel during the launch phase, the number of daily trips exceeded 100. Starting Monday, the metro service will revert to its original schedule of 50 trips per day. The fare structure has been set at concessional rates, with passengers paying a minimum of five rupees for short distances and eight rupees for a seven-kilometer journey. Promotional discounts will be in effect for the first three months, with fares gradually increasing to standard rates. Officials are now focusing on the upcoming 17-km trial run, which will extend the metro service from Gandhi Nagar to Radisson Hotel Square. This expansion is expected to significantly boost regular ridership, particularly among employees and students from major institutions such as TCS and Infosys, whose campuses are located along the route. Currently, the Metro operates within a seven-km stretch, primarily covering commercial zones. However, as the network expands, its impact on urban mobility and connectivity will become more pronounced, offering residents a modern and efficient transit system. The broader metro network, once fully operational, is expected to cover 31.32 km with 28 stations, further enhancing Indore's public transportation infrastructure.

Apple under pressure to shine after AI stumble

SAN FRANCISCO: Pressure is on Apple to show it hasn't lost its magic despite broken promises to ramp up iPhones with generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) as rivals race ahead with the technology. Apple will showcase plans for its coveted devices and the software powering them at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) kicking off Monday in Silicon Valley. The event comes a year after the tech titan said a suite of AI features it dubbed "Apple Intelligence" was heading for iPhones, including an improvement of its much-criticised Siri voice assistant. "Apple advertised a lot of features as if they were going to be available, and it just didn't happen," noted Emarketer senior analyst Gadjo Sevilla. Instead, Apple delayed the rollout of the Siri upgrade, with hopes that it will be available in time for the next iPhone release, expected in the fall. "I don't think there is going to be that much of a celebratory tone at WWDC," the analyst told AFP. "It could be more of a way for Apple to recover some credibility by showing where they're headed." Industry insiders will be watching to see whether Apple addresses the AI stumble or focuses on less splashy announcements, including a rumoured overhaul of its operating systems for its line of devices. "The bottom line is Apple seemed to underestimate the AI shift, then over-promised features, and is now racing to catch up," Gene Munster and Brian Baker of Deepwater Asset Management wrote in a WWDC preview note. Rumors also include talk that Apple may add GenAI partnerships with Google or Perplexity to an OpenAI alliance announced a year ago.
