Rockets assistant coach Royal Ivey named to Texas Athletics Hall of Honor

USA Today25-07-2025
Assistant coach Royal Ivey is joining Kevin Durant and DJ Augustin (front office) as current Rockets who are in the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor.
Houston Rockets assistant coach Royal Ivey, who previously played in college at the University of Texas and then for several NBA teams, will soon be inducted into the Texas Athletics Hall of Honor.
Ivey is among 10 individuals that will be recognized as the Class of 2025 during a Sept. 12 induction ceremony in Austin. Details on the ceremony are available here.
From his Texas Hall of Honor biography:
A four-year starter at both point guard and shooting guard during his career at Texas, Royal Ivey left his mark as one of the top one-on-one perimeter defenders in program history.
A two-time Big 12 Conference All-Defensive Team selection, he finished his collegiate career ranked first in games started (126), tied for third in games played (133), and 24th in scoring (1,036 points). Ivey helped lead the Longhorns to four consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, including three-straight trips to the Sweet 16 (2002, 2003, and 2004) and a spot in the 2003 Final Four.
In addition to Ivey's extensive NBA ties, both as a player and assistant coach, the 43-year-old was also the head coach when South Sudan secured its first-ever Olympic berth and victory during the 2024 Olympics cycle. He has been considered for NBA head coaching jobs in recent years and might soon land one, though he's returning to the staff of Ime Udoka for at least one more season in Houston.
As for the Texas Hall of Honor, Ivey joins Kevin Durant and DJ Augustin as current members of the Rockets who are part of that exclusive club of Longhorns legends. Durant was acquired by trade this offseason, and Augustin is a former player who is back with Houston as a front-office member.
Both Durant (2006-07) and Augustin (2006-08) also played at Texas during the 2000s decade, although a few years later than Ivey (2001-04).
More: Despite external coaching inquiries, Royal Ivey likely to stay with Rockets, Ime Udoka

Lakers and Luka Doncic agree to three-year, $165-million contract extension

Luka Doncic has provided the Lakers and their fans with good news for the future by signing a contract extension with the team on Saturday. Doncic signed a three-year, $165-million deal with a player option in 2028 on Saturday morning, his agent, Bill Duffy, confirmed to The Times. Signing that contract allows Doncic to eventually sign a maximum deal in 2028 that would give him 35% of the salary camp for five seasons, which would pay him about $369 million because of his 10 years of NBA experience. Doncic, who will earn $45.9 million this season, will hold a news conference with his representatives later Saturday at the Lakers' practice facility in El Segundo. 'I just signed my extension with the Lakers,' Doncic said in a release after he signed. 'Excited to keep working to bring championships to LA and make Laker Nation proud. Grateful to the Lakers, my teammates and all the fans who've shown so much love since day one. This is just the beginning.' At the end of the statement, Doncic posted two hearts in purple and gold, which are the Lakers' colors. Doncic signing his deal with the Lakers couldn't have come at a better time. Doncic was in Los Angeles on Saturday for his Jordan Brand event, which he also held earlier this week in New York and Chicago. Read more: Luka Doncic takes a jab at Mavericks while showing off his revenge body 'Today is a monumental moment for our franchise. Luka Doncic's future is with the Los Angeles Lakers,' Lakers president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka said in a statement. 'Luke is one of the game's most transcendent players, and his on-court dominance and passion is without comparison.' During his short time with the Lakers, Doncic has linked up with LeBron James to make them a worthy team that posted a 50-32 record last season and gave them the third seed in the rugged Western Conference. In 28 games with the Lakers after the shocking and blockbuster trade that saw Los Angeles get Doncic from Dallas in exchange for Anthony Davis on Feb. 4, he averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists in 35.1 minutes per game. Doncic shot 43.8% from the field and 37.9% from three-point range. In five playoff games, a first-round series the Lakers lost 4-1 to the Minnesota Timberwolves, Doncic averaged 30.2 points per game, 7.0 rebounds and 5.8 assists. He shot 45.2% from the field and 34.8% from three-point range. At 26, Doncic is the superstar that the Lakers always seem to have on their roster as the face of the future. While playing for the Mavericks, there were reports that said Doncic was heavily criticized because of poor conditioning and diet issues. This summer, Doncic has worked to change that narrative. In photos that accompanied in a 'Men's Heath' magazine feature, Doncic appears to be a changed man. He is toned and slimmed down in the photos from the magazine. 'Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better,' Doncic said in the story that was published Monday. Doncic was quoted in the article as having been at home in Croatia when his workouts began, and in subsequent interviews said he did not play basketball for a month. It was a variety of things that got Doncic looking so much more defined than in past years, from weightlifting, sprints and a change of his eating habits in committing to a better diet. Doncic talked in the story about how he wants to maintain his dedication to his body throughout the season. 'This year, with my [training] team, I think we did a huge step,' Doncic said in the article. 'But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop … if I stop now, it was all for nothing.' Doncic will once again play for the Slovenian national basketball team this month in the EuroBasketball 2025. His Slovenian team will face Poland on August 28, which will give Doncic a chance to show off his body and conditioning in a basketball game setting. Doncic also played a role in the Lakers getting two much-needed free agents this summer by helping recruit the players. Doncic reached out to center Deandre Ayton, who signed with the Lakers for two years and $16.2 million, giving the 6-6 guard and Los Angeles the big man they absolutely had to have for this upcoming season. Doncic also called guard Marcus Smart, who signed a two-year contract worth $11 million, giving the Lakers a much-needed wing defender after they lost Dorian Finney-Smith in free agency. Smart said Doncic called him twice to sell him on playing for the Lakers. Sign up for our weekly newsletter on all things Lakers. This story originally appeared in Los Angeles Times.

Luka Dončić agrees to 3-year, $165 million max extension with Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers view Luka Dončić as the future of the franchise. The team inked the 26-year-old to a three-year, $165 million max extension Saturday. Per ESPN's Shams Charania, Dončić's deal features a player option in 2028, and he is now eligible for a projected five years and $417 million in 2028. [Join or create a Yahoo Fantasy Football league for the 2025 NFL season] The move doesn't come as a major surprise. Since he debuted with the Dallas Mavericks during the 2018-19 NBA season, Dončić has performed like one of the best players in the NBA. He won the Rookie of the Year Award that season, is a five-time All-Star and has five MVP finishes in the top eight. It was always expected the Lakers would sign Dončić to a long-term deal after the team traded Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a first-round pick to Dallas in February in exchange for Dončić. You don't acquire a player of Dončić's caliber and allow him to walk after just a year and a half. Prior to the extension, Dončić was set to enter what could have been the final year of his contract. He held a $48 million player option for the 2026-27 NBA season that he almost certainly would have declined in favor of receiving a massive deal on the free-agent market. The Lakers were never going to let Dončić get to that point, which is why a max extension was always assumed. The bigger question surrounding Dončić's next contract was its length. With Dončić signed, the Lakers now have their future secured. Dončić melded with the team well after being acquired in February. In 28 games in Los Angeles, Dončić averaged 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds and 7.5 assists, essentially the same numbers he averaged with the Mavericks. Following the Lakers' postseason elimination, head coach JJ Redick challenged the team to get in "championship shape," which many perceived as a challenge aimed at Dončić, whose conditioning has been questioned during his career. By all accounts, Dončić heard that message. He's reportedly dropped "significant weight" ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season. With LeBron James back, and Dončić possibly in the best shape of his career, the Lakers will enter the year with championship aspirations. While James' future with the franchise remains a question — he's 40 and only under contract for one more season — Dončić is talented enough to make the team a perennial contender after James leaves or retires. That was always the plan when the team pulled off its shocking trade for Dončić in February. Following Saturday's extension, it's now the team's reality.

Bam Adebayo satisfied with Heat's offseason moves: ‘It's a very good shake up for our team'

Miami Heat captain and cornerstone Bam Adebayo predicted an offseason of change for the franchise. 'There are going to be a lot of changes this summer,' Adebayo said in late April just a few days after the Heat was eliminated in the first round of the playoffs for the second straight season. 'Just from my point of view, understanding how the guy with the silver hair [Heat president Pat Riley) works. So just be prepared for that.' So far, the Heat has three new faces on its standard roster for next season — Simone Fontecchio, Kasparas Jakucionis and Norman Powell. Those from last season's season-ending standard roster who are no longer with the Heat are Kyle Anderson, Alec Burks, Kevin Love and Duncan Robinson. Is that enough change for a Heat team that has been eliminated in the first round of the playoffs in each of the last two seasons, has needed to qualify for the playoffs through the NBA's play-in tournament in each of the last three seasons, and finished this past regular season with a losing record for the first time since the 2018-19 season and just the sixth time in Riley's 30 seasons with the organization? 'It's a very good shake up for our team and now there's a different dynamic to it,' Adebayo said Saturday, making his first comments to South Florida media since the end of last season during a break at his sixth annual youth basketball clinic at SLAM! Miami charter school. While Adebayo has not yet won an NBA championship, the three-time NBA All-Star knows what it takes to make a deep playoff run. Boston's Jaylen Brown (135 playoff appearances) and Jayson Tatum (121 playoff appearances), Denver's Jamal Murray (79 playoff appearances) and Adebayo (78 playoff appearances) are the only players in the league currently younger than 29 years old who have already appeared in at least 78 playoff games during their NBA careers. Adebayo hopes the addition of Powell, who produced All-Star caliber numbers last season, can help the Heat get back to winning playoff series. Powell averaged a career-high 21.8 points to go with 3.2 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.2 steals per game while shooting 48.4% from the field and 41.8% on 7.1 three-point attempts per game for the Los Angeles Clippers last season. Powell was among six NBA players who averaged at least 21 points per game while shooting better than 48% from the field and better than 40% from three-point range last regular season along with Nikola Jokic, Kevin Durant, Karl-Anthony Towns, Zach LaVine and Kawhi Leonard. 'I feel like Norman is one of those guys that floats under the radar,' said Adebayo, who turned 28 on July 18 and has already played in three Eastern Conference finals and two NBA Finals. 'But as you saw this year, he's really shown that he can be an All-Star caliber player. You've seen what he's done and you've seen him grow in this league. And, obviously, he wants to take the next challenge. Obviously, the next challenge is being with the Miami Heat. So I'm happy to have him.' The Heat also retained guard Davion Mitchell in free agency this offseason. Mitchell agreed to a new deal this summer worth $24 million over two seasons to return after thriving in Miami following his mid-season trade to the Heat as part of the Jimmy Butler deal in February. Following the trade to Miami, Mitchell averaged 10.3 points, 2.7 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.4 steals per game while shooting 50.4% from the field and 44.7% on 3.1 three-point attempts per game in 30 regular-season appearances (15 starts) for the Heat. Mitchell's point-of-attack defense also immediately helped the Heat, as Miami allowed 3.4 fewer points per 100 possessions with Mitchell on the court compared to when he wasn't playing after the February trade. 'Davion being back, obviously, we've been missing somebody that can really play on-ball defense,' Adebayo said. 'And having him come in and be that guy and understand his role, I'm looking forward to him being here for a full year and all of us being together and getting to know one another and turning this into more of a brotherhood. We were kind of disconnected a little bit trying to figure out everybody's role and trying to figure out everybody's style of play. But now we're going to have a good training camp and then we go from there.' While Adebayo is satisfied with the Heat's roster changes this offseason, he has mixed emotions about some of the moves made because of the teammates he lost. 'I'm going to miss them, obviously,' Adebayo said of losing Robinson and Love as Heat teammates. 'Just because Duncan has been here for eight years and having that connection was special. And then K-Love was a leader that could speak to somebody from a championship level, could obviously encourage the younger group, be an example, but also he was the bridge between some of the coaches and the players. So like I said, I'm going to miss both of them. I'm glad we had the time that we did. It was, obviously, helpful for my growth and my development as a player and as a captain.' Adebayo's time in Miami continues after spending the first eight seasons of his career with the Heat. Hosting his sixth annual youth basketball clinic in Miami is a reflection of his long Heat tenure. 'It just speaks to what I've done in the community and that people believe in Bam camp,' Adebayo said. 'They see it as an opportunity for kids to get better, kids to start understanding the game better. I take pride in that because these kids are our future. So it's my job to invest in them now and you never know what can happen.' As the Heat's captain and highest paid player, Adebayo hopes his ninth season with the Heat is his best yet. 'I care. That's the one thing that people don't understand about me – I care,' said Adebayo, who is under contract with the Heat through the 2028-29 season. 'I value relationships, I value me being loyal to this community.'
