AIFF counsel to mention ISL impasse to Supreme Court on Monday
The apex court has reserved its judgement on draft AIFF constitution and a hearing is scheduled for Monday.
Hundreds of Indian and foreign footballers are living in uncertainty as the Masters Rights Agreement (MRA) between Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL) and AIFF with regards to Indian Super League is yet to be signed. The clubs have decided not to pay salaries to the players and support staff till the impasse continues.
'A discussion was held between the legal representatives of the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and the Indian Super League (ISL) clubs, on Thursday, August 14, 2025," AIFF issued a statement on 'X'. 'It has been agreed by all parties that the concerns of the ISL clubs pertaining to the delay in the commencement of the 2025-26 ISL season, and the hardship being felt by the players and other stakeholders will be conveyed to the Hon'ble Supreme Court next week, for its kind consideration," it further stated.
In fact, an AIFF source said that they are willing to file a written application if the court asks for one.
'Yes we will be attempting to mention but since judgement is reserved we have to see how the judges takes it. If they feel there is merit in appeal, they may ask for an application to be filed. The plight of the players, clubs and football need to be brought to their notice, " a club source told PTI.
The AIFF on Wednesday had asked the legal counsels of the game's apex body and the ISL clubs to 'hold discussions" on the teams' concerns about the uncertainty over the upcoming season of the top-tier league.
Last week, 11 Indian Super League clubs had urged the AIFF to urgently bring the 'current situation" of Indian football, arising out of the uncertainty over ISL's future, to the attention of the Supreme Court before which a case relating to the constitution of the national federation is pending.
The ISL clubs, in a letter, said that they will have no option but to seek judicial recourse independently if the AIFF does not act on their request.
'On August 13, the AIFF responded and requested that the legal counsels of the clubs and the federation meet to hold discussions on the matter and decide on further action," the AIFF tweeted.
The clubs requested the AIFF to approach the top court a day after the national federation proposed the Super Cup in September to ensure sufficient competitive matches for the clubs after ISL organisers FSDL put a 'pause" on the league due to uncertainty over the renewal of Master Rights Agreement (MRA) it signed with them in 2010.
The crisis deepened after ISL organisers FSDL put the 2025-26 season 'on hold" on July 11 due to uncertainty over the renewal of the MRA, prompting at least three clubs to either pause first-team operations or suspend player and staff salaries. PTI KHS ATK KHS ATK

How Lionel Messi was convinced to visit India for exhibition tour: Ronaldinho, Emiliano Martinez, and Durga Puja statue
In one of the most eagerly-anticipated moments of the year for Indian football fans, four cities across the country will get the chance to welcome Lionel Messi to their homes this winter. There are no two ways about it: when it comes to sport, Messi is a god-like figure, with nobody inspiring quite as much awe as the little Argentinian. Lionel Messi in action during a recent match for Argentina.(REUTERS) So how is it that he was convinced to visit India for a taxing four city tour in the twilight of his career, 14 years on from the first time he visited? Kolkata-based sports promoter Satadru Dutta, responsible for this set of exhibitions, had a fairly simple reasoning: getting good reviews of India into the ears of Leo Messi. Messi's teammates Emiliano Martinez, who helped lift the 2022 FIFA World Cup for Argentina, and Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho had both arrived in India last year for similar events organised by Dutta. As per the promoter, asking them to get a word in edgeways with Messi was the only way. 'The football world is a small circle. When I got Emi Martinez and Ronaldinho to Kolkata, I told them that I am trying to bring Messi to India and your review will matter,' he explained to the Indian Express. 'If you can give a good review to his team and even Messi himself, it will help. Touchwood, I executed it in a neat and clean way, they gave a very good review to Messi,' he continued. How nostalgia and a Durga Puja statue helped convince Messi The good news for Dutta was that Messi agreed, even if not immediately, but that the deal was cut thanks to the help of Messi's former teammates. Dutta revealed that a chat with Messi in 2024 led to the decision that within that year would not be possible, but it would be on Messi's agenda for the future 'I just said if it would be possible over the next one or two years, he said 'I love the idea',' Dutta continued. He further revealed that a couple of flourishes helped seal the deal, such as showing Messi videos of his last time in India in 2011, which happened to be the first of many times he wore the skipper's armband for the Albiceleste, as well as a picture of a Messi statue that was installed on a Durga Puja pandal in a football-crazed Kolkata. Messi will first be flying to Kolkata, the first stop on a four-city tour also including Ahmedabad, New Delhi, and Mumbai. The multi-city model for the tour would be tougher to organise, but also essential for it to be lucrative, said Dutta: 'If it is not multiple cities, it won't be financially viable.' The Argentinian megastar is expected to take part in several functions, meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and also participate in seven-a-side games from legendary Indian athletes to Bollywood celebrities — and potentially even try his hand at cricket alongside some modern-day Indian greats, if reports are to be believed.

Russia ‘lost oil client' India: Trump claim on whether tariffs brought Putin to table in Alaska
US President Donald Trump claimed on Friday that Russia lost an "oil client", India, when asked if "there is an economic side" to Russian President Vladimir Putin agreeing to hold a meeting in Alaska. In an interview with Fox News, Trump was asked, "Would you sense that Putin comes to this table maybe in an economic pinch? Maybe the things you've already done have put him in an economic pitch. Is there an economic side to this as Russia hoping to open up?" Trump responded by saying, "Well, he [Putin] lost an oil client, so to speak, which is India, which was doing about 40% of the oil." 'China, as you know, is doing a lot [ of oil trade with Russia]...,' he said. Trump had earlier threatened sanctions on Moscow and secondary sanctions on countries that buy its oil if no moves are made to end the war in Ukraine. China and India are the top two buyers of Russian oil. Donald Trump said on Friday he did not immediately need to consider retaliatory tariffs on countries such as China for buying Russian oil but might have to 'in two or three weeks.' "…if I did what's called the secondary sanction or a secondary tariff, it would be, you know, very devastating from their standpoint. If I have to do it, I'll do it. Maybe I won't have to do it," Trump said. Trump's comments came ahead of his meeting with Putin in Alaska on Friday. The two leaders held three-on-three meeting on Friday to discuss Ukraine war. After the summit, Trump was asked if he was now considering such action against Beijing after he and Putin failed to produce an agreement to resolve or pause Moscow's war in Ukraine. He said, "Well, because of what happened today, I think I don't have to think about that," Trump said after his summit with Putin in Alaska. 'Now, I may have to think about it in two weeks or three weeks or something, but we don't have to think about that right now. I think, you know, the meeting went very well.' Earlier this month, Trump threatened buyers of Russian energy with additional tariffs as a means of pressuring Putin into peace talks with Ukraine. The US president already doubled duties on Indian products to 50 percent starting August 27 over its purchases of oil from Moscow. But raising tariffs on China would risk breaking a trade truce that Trump on Monday agreed to extend for another 90 days. That agreement saw Washington and Beijing lower duties on each others' goods that reached astronomical levels in the spring, which spooked global markets. China has defended its imports of Russian oil as lawful and necessary for its energy security.
