Abu Dhabi ranked as the fifth smartest city in the world – and here's why

Abu Dhabi is officially one of the smartest cities on the planet.
The capital has soared to fifth place in the 2025 IMD Smart City Index, climbing five spots from last year.
From slick transport systems to park sensors and free Wi-Fi pretty much everywhere, it's no wonder residents are giving the capital top marks.
The ranking, which surveys locals in 146 cities worldwide, shows just how far Abu Dhabi has come in five years – jumping from 14th place in 2020 to its current top 5 status.
In a new global achievement, Abu Dhabi ranks among the top five smart cities worldwide in the IMD Smart City Index 2025, reflecting its leadership in urban development and smart governance, and its vision toward future-ready cities.#AbuDhabi #YearOfCommunity #SmartCityIndex pic.twitter.com/GVPb5XvZUA — دائرة البلديات والنقل (@AbuDhabiDMT) April 23, 2025
According to His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT), this rise is no fluke. He credits Abu Dhabi's smart transformation to a united government approach and a focus on making the city an even better place to live, work and explore.
So, what makes Abu Dhabi so smart? For starters, it's traffic. Or lack thereof. More than half of residents said congestion isn't much of an issue and over 82 percent gave a thumbs up to public transport – with more than 90 million bus rides and 168,000 water transport trips taken last year alone.
Not to mention the game-changing double-bridge project on Al Khaleej Al Arabi Street, which slashed peak-hour delays by up to 80 percent. We love to see it.
Then there are the green spaces. In 2024 alone, DMT opened more than 200 parks and beaches and 84 percent of residents say they're happy with the access and upkeep.
It's not just about numbers though – seven of those parks have gone full-on futuristic with smart sensors tracking everything from air quality to soil humidity. That's sustainability with a side of techy cool.
There's also free public Wi-Fi all over the city – on buses, beaches and in parks thanks to Hala Wi-Fi – making it easier than ever to stay connected. Around 75 percent of survey respondents said it helped improve access to services, which played a big role in boosting the city's ranking.
Add to that initiatives like Abu Dhabi Canvas – an urban beautification project using local creative talent to celebrate Emirati heritage – and the city's commitment to inclusive, forward-thinking development becomes crystal clear.
With the new regional office for the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organisation (WeGO) now based in Abu Dhabi, the capital isn't just setting standards locally – it's positioning itself as a regional hub for smart city innovation, knowledge-sharing and sustainable urban growth.
Fifth place never looked so good.

ADHA partners with banks to boost homeownership access

Arabian Post Staff -Dubai The Abu Dhabi Housing Authority has entered into agreements with three national banks to offer top-up housing finance at subsidised interest and profit rates. This initiative aims to enhance accessibility to homeownership for UAE nationals, a central goal of the authority's efforts to expand affordable housing options in the capital. The latest collaboration will allow individuals who have already received funding under the ADHA's housing loan programme to access additional financial support. The move is designed to ease the financial burden on homeowners by offering more flexible payment plans and lower rates, a critical factor in the current economic climate. ADVERTISEMENT The newly established partnerships involve top national banks, further broadening the scope of the ADHA's housing initiatives. By securing these collaborations, the authority aims to build stronger financial partnerships within the sector, ensuring more inclusive access to property ownership for citizens. In total, the initiative is expected to benefit hundreds of Emirati families, with an anticipated surge in demand due to the competitive financing terms. These agreements come as part of a broader strategy to increase homeownership rates across the UAE. In recent years, the government has intensified efforts to make housing more affordable for nationals, with various initiatives addressing the financing gap for first-time homeowners and those wishing to upgrade their homes. One key aspect of these new arrangements is the focus on easing the strain of high property prices, which have been a barrier to homeownership for many nationals, particularly in urban areas like Abu Dhabi. Under these new terms, eligible individuals can access additional funds to cover the increasing costs of property ownership while benefiting from interest rates that are considerably lower than the market average. For the participating banks, this initiative represents a further opportunity to tap into the growing demand for home loans. The ADHA's housing programme has already seen strong uptake, and these new partnerships are expected to foster a sense of long-term trust between the government and financial institutions. The banks are anticipated to leverage their extensive customer networks to ensure the accessibility of these financing options to as many eligible nationals as possible. With the UAE's real estate market still facing challenges, especially for first-time buyers, these developments signify a critical step towards more equitable homeownership opportunities. By working with national banks, ADHA is addressing the economic disparities that can prevent nationals from owning their homes, aligning with broader national goals of social stability and financial inclusion. This collaboration also ties into the broader vision of diversifying the economy and reducing reliance on non-housing sectors by fostering homegrown economic growth. Providing affordable housing options for nationals is a pivotal part of these ambitions, ensuring that families can build long-term wealth and stability through property ownership. The new financing schemes are part of an ongoing drive to not only increase the number of homeowners but also improve the living standards of UAE nationals by offering improved housing conditions. While much of the focus has been on infrastructure projects and urban development, there is now an increased emphasis on ensuring that the growing population of UAE nationals can access property that suits their needs and income levels.

Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque ranks 8th among world's top attractions, 1st in Middle East — global report

The iconic Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque has once again received global recognition, ranking 8th among the world's top attractions in TripAdvisor's 2025 Travelers' Choice Awards: Best of the Best . The landmark also secured the top spot in the Middle East, leading the Burj Khalifa, Dubai Frame, Qasr Al Watan, and The Dubai Fountain, all of which made it to the top 5 in the regional category. Out of over 8 million listings, fewer than 1% earn the coveted 'Best of the Best' distinction, which is based on the volume and quality of real traveler reviews over a 12-month period. A reflection of visionary leadership Dr. Yousif Al Obaidli, Director-General of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, attributed the global recognition to the UAE's forward-thinking leadership. 'This success crowns a continuous series of outstanding initiatives and services offered throughout the year. These efforts have included the development of both cultural and physical infrastructure, enhancement of facilities, excellence in specialist staff, and the empowerment of Emirati youth by qualifying them to deliver cultural tours and host the mosque's diverse visitors through distinguished programmes that embody the mosque's civilisational message,' he said. A growing global attraction In 2024, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque welcomed 6.58 million visitors and worshippers, marking a 20% increase from the previous year. The total included more than 4.2 million tourists and over 2.2 million worshippers and individuals observing fasts. Nearly 61,000 visitors also used the mosque's scenic jogging track. Religious events also drew significant crowds. Ramadan and Eid prayers alone attracted 617,458 attendees, with 87,186 people visiting on the 27th night of Ramadan, April 5 — the highest single-day attendance in the mosque's history. International visitors continued to make up the majority, accounting for 81% of the total, while 19% were residents of the United Arab Emirates.
