Denza's expansion: Two additional models South Africa could get

For the moment, only one model as been confirmed, however, a likely expansion could potentially bring the brand's flagship MPV and SUV.
Its arrival in South Africa taking place next year, BYD-owned Denza will become the 15th Chinese brand to have a presence in the local market.
Joining a growing list
Debuting in early 2026 with the B5, a rebadged version of its Fangchengbao brand's Bao 5 SUV based on the same platform as the BYD Shark bakkie, the debut of Denza will follow those of its parent company, as well as the current marques from the People's Republic:

In addition, further arrivals from Changan and Deepal, as well as the pending return of Geely and JMC will bump the number to 19 before the end of the year.
Arriving next
A joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz started 15-years ago, but wholly owned by BYD since last year, the global Denza range consists of five products motivated either by a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or all-electric powertrain.

In addition to the Fangchengbao Bao 8 possibly making landfall as the Denza B8 to rival the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Fortuner, Ford Everest, Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Isuzu MU-X and Mahindra Scorpio-N as well, in-house Denza options could include the PHEV versions of the D9 MPV and the N9 SUV.
As a result of BYD marketing the Seal locally, the Z9 sedan and its Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo-inspired Z9 GT fastback estate are not expected to be offered, with the same likely to apply to the all-electric N7 crossover.
D9
The oldest model's in Denza's product range having debuted three years ago, the Kia Carnival-rivalling D9 comes in both PHEV and electric guises, with the former presenting the best option in the case of sales being approved for South Africa.
On-sale since the end of last year in Thailand, thus making it available with right-hand-drive, the D9 has measurements of 5 250 mm in overall length, a wheelbase of 3 110 mm, height of 1 920 mm and width of 1 950 mm.
The recipient of a mid-life refresh last year in preparation for its Thai debut, the D9, in China, comes with seven seats, however, an ultra-luxurious four-seater, called the Pioneer, can be had in which the centre row makes way for a bulkhead partition with an integrated screen.

In addition, a console separates the pair of captain's style chairs, complete with an integrated tablet-style display, storage areas and an upper cooled storage hold.
The seats themselves, meanwhile, are electric and feature ventilation, heating and massaging functions.
Based on BYD's DM-i platform made specifically for plug-in hybrids, the D9's choice of powerunits comprises two options, both modelled around a turbocharged 1.5-litre petrol engine.

In the first instance, the petrol's 102 kW is backed-up by a 20.3-kWh Blade battery pack powering a single 170 kW electric motor.
Combined, the system produces 221 kW and allows for an all-electric range of 103 km based on China's CLTC measurements.
Unofficially called the 'long range' option, the second variant involves a 40-kWh battery with the same electric motor and outputs, but an EV-only range of 200 km.

Combined with the petrol engine, the 'long range' has a claimed distance of 1 050 km versus the 'standard's' 970 km.
Serving as the range's flagship, the all-wheel-drive D9 adds a second 45 kW electric motor to the front axle for a total output of 299 kW. The claimed electric range is 180 km and the combined, 980 km.
Pricing in China kicks-off at 339 800 yuan, which amounts to R852 594 when directly converted.
N9
Revealed as the end of last year as its flagship SUV, the N9 not only serves as Denza's flagship SUV, but also its most powerful plug-in hybrid product.
Utilising a 2-2-2 seating arrangement, in addition to being inclusive of BYD's latest LiDAR system, the N9 rides on its parent company's latest e-Platform 3.0 with dimensions of 5 258 mm in length, a wheelbase of 3 125 mm, width of 2 030 mm and height of 1 830 mm.
Reportedly equipped with a crab walking function as well as a tank turn-style, up front, N9 combines BYD's 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 46.9-kWh Blade battery powering no less than electric motors.
In total, this amounts to 680 kW, a reported top speed of 230 km/h, according to carnewschina.com, and an electric-only range of 202 km. The combined is 1 302 km.
On the spec front, and depending on the trim level, the N9 sports a Head-Up Display projected onto the windscreen, a 26-speaker sound system, a BMW 7 Series-style 17.3-inch flip-down screen, refrigerated second-row centre console, a 3.2 m3 panoramic glass roof, electric, cooled, heated and massaging second-row, and Nappa leather upholstery.
As standard, Denza has fitted the N9 with three displays; a 13.2-inch instrument cluster, a 17.3-inch infotainment and a 13.2-inch on the passenger side.
For the moment, neither the mentioned models have received approval and as mentioned, expect final confirmation to only emerge at the end of the year or before Denza's official product launch next year.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi elaborated on the state of the province and developments on the international front. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi is bullish over the province's future, as he believes a new trade partnership will help absorb the looming impact of tariffs imposed by the United States (US). The premier was in the provincial legislature on Tuesday, fielding questions from opposition parties on the state of Gauteng. Lesufi touched on several issues, but explained at length his administration's position on the US, China and the Middle East. China to rescue Gauteng A 30% tariff on trade goods imposed by the US government is set to take effect this week, placing pressure on exporters across the country. Lesufi stated that he and his team were in China in June to conclude a memorandum of understanding with the province of Hunan. The agreement will see the two provinces form a skills and resources pipeline that would be mutually beneficial for the trade, infrastructure, manufacturing and agriculture industries of both provinces. He said representatives were finalising the 'operationalisation' of the deal. This will include the opening of a steel factory in Gauteng and various other urban initiatives. 'They have agreed to assist us to revitalise the inner-city of Johannesburg — the Chinese. They are also going to give us support in terms of rail and infrastructure,' explained Lesufi. 'They are also going to provide us with support in crime-combating initiatives in Gauteng and further give us support in agriculture and an agro-processing export programme for Gauteng exports into the Hunan–China market.' 'Never' abandon Palestine The idea that the tariffs were a punishment for South Africa's black economic empowerment policy has been suggested and denied from various quarters, with Lesufi putting forward another position. 'We are of the strong view that the decision taken by the US is nothing but the punishment for the posture to defend the people of Palestine. 'We will never abandon the people of Palestine, regardless of the intimidation tactics imposed on us as a country. 'The people of Palestine remain our ally, and we will defend them,' stated Lesufi. Lesufi says no 'bully' will dictate SA's trade He added that the new deal with the Chinese was conducted on a 'friendly basis', not through the perceived strong-arm tactics used by the US. 'The agreement we have reached with China on this trade confirms and affirms the decision taken to diversify our market and not rely on a bully to dictate to us where we can buy and where we can trade,' he said. However, the premier admitted that the consequences of the tariffs could be widespread and severe. 'We are looking forward to the negotiations that have been initiated to convince the US not to impose the 30% tariffs on our country, and create a bloodbath of unemployment in various sectors of society,' Lesufi concluded. E-toll gantries and debt E-tolls may no longer be a concern for motorists, but members of the legislature wished to know what would happen to the gantries dotting the province's freeways. ALSO READ: Gauteng pays R5.44 billion e-toll debt amid budget constraints Lesufi explained that provincial leadership had met with transport minister Barbara Creecy, who has taken ownership of the infrastructure. 'It was agreed that we leave all e-toll related matters with [Creecy] and the South African National Roads Agency Ltd (Sanral) board,' he said. 'While the province has proposed what the repurposing can entail, the gantries remain the assets of the national government, and we will await the board of Sanral and the engagement with the minister to finalise these matters.' The provincial government has paid almost R10 billion toward e-toll this year alone, and Lesufi defended the decision to scrap the tax and absorb the debt. 'When we took a decision to pay the principal amount, it also allowed Sanral to go to the market to raise money to improve roads across the country — including in the Western Cape. 'This decision to pay e-tolls has unlocked our road infrastructure and has allowed us to go to the next phase of building new highways in our province,' the premier said. In recent additional expenditure, Lesufi said the provincial government had released R2 billion on 30 June for the maintenance of roads across the province. Lesufi challenges DA Democratic Alliance members grilled Lesufi on the decay of arts and culture monuments, as well as contracts awarded to family members of Deputy President Paul Mashatile. DA's Jack Bloom highlighted a R49 million contract for fire prevention services given to Mashatile's sons, stating that allegations routinely went investigated. 'Alarm bells should ring when politicians live in a style way beyond their means while their friends and family get lucrative contracts,' said Bloom, as he held up a large photo of Mashatile's Cape Town mansion. Bloom was reprimanded for the prohibited use of props in the legislature, before Lesufi challenged the DA's claims. 'I act on evidence, not shouting and screaming. If the DA has evidence of corruption or any wrongdoing, I am asking them now to give it to me. 'If you want to dictate who controls me, there is only one formation that controls me, and that formation is the ANC,' the premier concluded. South Africa's biggest grocery retailer Shoprite Holdings said on Tuesday it is selling its operations in Ghana and Malawi, marking another step towards consolidation of its activities across Africa to focus more on its home market. The supermarket retailer had expanded extensively in Africa, surpassing rivals such as Pick n Pay and Walmart-owned Massmart to become the continent's leading food retailer in 15 countries. But forays into markets such as Angola and Nigeria were marred by currency volatility, double-digit inflation, high import duties and dollar-based rentals. On Tuesday it said Shoprite Malawi signed an agreement on June 6 to dispose of five trading stores, pending certain conditions, including approval from the Competition & Fair Trading Commission and the Reserve Bank of Malawi.

Anti-dumping investigation: top loader prices set to rise

South Africa's washing machines are about to get more expensive, and Defy is hoping that's good news. The Department of Trade, Industry and Competition (DTIC) has endorsed the defence of the fully automatic top-loading washer hill. What began as a complaint lodged by Defy Appliances has now become a formal anti-dumping investigation and, soon, the likely imposition of provisional duties against imports from China and Thailand. It looks like a straightforward response to cheap foreign goods flooding the market, hammering local manufacturers and threatening jobs. But it is simultaneously a complex web of strategic policy, protectionism, precedent, and unintended consequences in the spin cycle. A heavy load The saga officially began in October 2024 when Defy asked the International Trade Administration Commission (Itac) to investigate imports of top-loading washers (10-17kg capacity) from China and Thailand. Defy alleges dumping margins of 21.48% for Chinese products and a whopping 67.11% for Thai machines, figures based on SA Revenue Service import data and overseas retail prices. It claims these imports have undercut local prices, slashed profits and forced an inventory build-up – a sign of unsold stock piling up in warehouses. In Defy's view, unless something is done, the injury will get worse as global overcapacity looks for cheap destinations such as South Africa. Itac seems to agree, at least enough to say a prima facie case exists. Provisional duties are expected by the end of 2025. Caught in a whirlpool Hisense South Africa was named alongside Chinese giant Midea in the Government Gazette, but the company says there's nothing sinister at play. 'Hisense SA categorically affirms that it has never been complicit in facilitating any form of alleged dumping, nor has it acted in contravention of South African trade laws or ethical business practices,' Luna Nortje, deputy general manager at Hisense SA, told Daily Maverick. 'We are fully committed to fair, transparent trade and continue to work closely with all relevant regulatory bodies to ensure full compliance.' 'These are standard processes designed to ensure market fairness and in no way imply unethical practice,' she said. Hisense's local credentials are significant. Since setting up shop in 1996, the company has invested more than R350-million into its Atlantis manufacturing plant, which today produces up to 500,000 refrigerators and a million televisions annually – not just for South Africa, but for export to more than 10 African countries. In fact, Nortje said Hisense was exploring further localisation: 'We are currently in the process of assessing the viability of manufacturing chest freezers at (the Atlantis) facility.' That said, she acknowledged the consumer pain. 'These tariffs will sadly affect consumers – as the product prices of those specific items would correspondingly increase.' A beast of Defy's own design Defy has danced this policy waltz before. Back in 2004, the company lobbied for a reduction in washing machine tariffs – it had halted local production and argued that duties hurt consumers. Then in 2019, it asked for a 30% hike on smaller top-loaders to protect planned investments in local manufacturing. Fast forward to 2025, and Defy is calling for protection again, but this time with localisation and industrial strategy riding shotgun. The DTIC's 'Reimagined Industrial Strategy' leans heavily on import substitution and job retention, and Defy's latest campaign aligns perfectly with those goals. In a way, the company is using trade policy not just as a shield, but as a tool to de-risk investment. Whether that's smart industrial pragmatism or self-serving protectionism depends on where you sit in the value chain. Copying moves from across the pond South Africa's washer war borrows heavily from America's. When Whirlpool triggered a trade war in the US against Samsung and LG a decade ago, it led to a game of global musical chairs. Once South Korean and Mexican washers were slapped with duties, production shifted to China. Then, when Chinese goods were targeted, factories moved to Thailand and Vietnam. This tactic (called 'country-hopping') made the US tariffs look more like speed bumps than roadblocks. Defy's decision to hit both China and Thailand out of the gate is a direct nod to that history; to plug the loopholes before they appear. But the American experience also shows how these moves can backfire. Prices on US washing machines rose by nearly 12% after those 2018 tariffs. Even dryers, which weren't tariffed, saw price hikes because retailers usually sell them in pairs. In the end, American consumers forked out $1.5 billion more, for 1,800 saved jobs. That worked out to more than $800,000 per job. Who wins, who spins? South Africa's washing machine trade wars come at a bad time for the economy. Winners: Defy gets a reprieve, likely recovering margin and market share. Policymakers score localisation points and can point to job protection. Local component suppliers might benefit if production ramps up. Losers: Consumers face higher prices – potentially 22% or more on affected washers. Low-income households bear the brunt; appliance affordability is a key cost-of-living metric. Retailers and importers scramble to find new sources, maybe from Vietnam, Turkey or Eastern Europe. Chinese and Thai exporters are likely to lose Southern African Customs Union market share, at least temporarily. Even complementary goods such as dryers could see price bumps, mimicking the US model. And as Defy gains pricing power, don't expect them to keep prices flat. Airing dirty laundry Anti-dumping duties sound noble, shielding local jobs from unfair trade, but they also set a precedent. What's stopping other industries from filing similar complaints? And if each results in price hikes, the inflationary impact stacks up. This matters for the South African Reserve Bank, which is already trying to keep inflation within the 3-6% target band. Appliances might be a small piece of the pie, but multiple actions like this create a cumulative effect. There's also the question of what happens in five years when the duties expire. Itac will have to decide whether the 'injury' risk still exists, and that decision will be just as political as it is economic… and Defy needs to show it was worth the effort with local investment.
