Jude Bellingham's true colours crystal clear as private message to Real Madrid ace emerges

Daily Mirror6 days ago
Former Real Madrid centre back Jesus Vallejo says he was blown away by what Jude Bellingham said to him after the England midfielder arrived at the club back in 2023
Jude Bellingham may divide opinion in some quarters, but not at Real Madrid. From the moment he arrived, he made a strong impression - not just on the club's hierarchy, but throughout the squad.

Following his £88million move to the Bernabeu in 2023, the England international was asked which shirt number he wanted. He chose No. 5, famously worn by legendary midfielder Zinedine Zidane. There was just one issue: it was already taken.

Fortunately, Jesus Vallejo - who had inherited the number from Raphael Varane two years earlier - was more than willing to hand it over. It was a small gesture, particularly from a player receiving limited minutes on the pitch, but Bellingham was nonetheless grateful and moved Vallejo with his response.

"I remember they signed Jude and the club told me that Jude liked the No. 5 that had belonged to Zidane," Vallejo, 28, told The Athletic. "I didn't need anything else, I told them that I would be delighted to give him the No 5.
"A minute later, Jude sent me a long message in English in private that was very emotional. Then, in person during the pre-season, he thanked me a lot.
"He's a guy who looks much older than he is. He has a very good mentality, I was delighted to give him the number before meeting him and even more so after I got to know him."

Despite his popularity in Spain, Bellingham has drawn criticism in recent months for his conduct toward match officials. Some observers now see him as petulant - including the mother of England manager Thomas Tuchel, who went so far as to describe his temperament as "repulsive".
Still, Bellingham's maturity hasn't gone unnoticed in Madrid. It's understood the club see him as future captain material, and heartfelt messages like the one he sent to Vallejo won't have hurt his chances.

Despite arriving at Real Madrid for £4.3m in 2015 as one of Spain's biggest prospects, Vallejo never managed to establish himself in the Spanish capital. In 10 years at the club the defender made just 35 appearances, spending the bulk of his tenure out on loan, including a short, seven-game stint at Wolves during the 2019/20 season.
Now, at 28, he will try to relaunch his career at Albacete, in the Spanish second division. Bellingham, meanwhile, has been on an entirely different trajectory.

He hit the ground running in Madrid, scoring 23 goals across all competitions in his debut season, including 14 in his first 15 games. In doing so, he broke the record previously shared by Cristiano Ronaldo and Alfredo Di Stefano, who had each scored 13 times in their opening 15 appearances for Los Blancos.
The midfielder capped off the season by being crowned the best player in Spain after helping fire Real Madrid to La Liga and Champions League glory. Last season, success on the field was harder to come by, particularly with Real being pipped by Barcelona in the race for the La Liga title.
Still, Bellingham delivered a strong individual performance, finishing the season with 15 goals. Today, he's widely regarded as one of the biggest talents - and most recognisable names - in world football, and the No. 5 shirt, once synonymous with Zidane, now feels unmistakably his.

Bayern Munich 'submit second Luis Diaz bid' as Liverpool eye Alexander Isak transfer funds

Liverpool have already spent more than £260m in this transfer window and could spend even more money after target Alexander Isak told Newcastle he wanted to leave Anfield - though they will need more funds to sign him Bayern Munich are not giving up in their bid to sign Liverpool star Luis Diaz after submitting a second bid for the Colombian. The Bundesliga club have made Diaz their top target this summer but previously saw a bid of around £58million rejected by the Reds, who have made it clear he is not for sale. ‌ Diaz was a huge part of Liverpool winning the Premier League title and competing on multiple fronts as he chipped in with 17 goals in all competitions. ‌ Liverpool have already spend more than £260m on players this summer and could outlay even more after being tipped to sign Alexander Isak for £150m - so they may be forced to do business with Bayern. ‌ Sky in Germany are reporting that Bayern have gone back in with another bid for Diaz, which is higher than the £58m Liverpool rejected. Talks are being spearheaded by Bayern chiefs Jan-Christian Dreesen and Max Eberl, who are keen to upgrade Vincent Kompany's squad to help the team push for even more honours next season. They have put a four-year deal on the table and Diaz is keen to make the move to Munich, having already told Liverpool he wants to explore a move away, it goes on to say. Earlier in the window Diaz was being chased by Barcelona as boss Hansi Flick sought to bring a new winger to the club - before the La Liga club opted to sign Marcus Rashford. That leaves Bayern as the frontrunners to sign the 28-year-old, who has just two years left to run on his contract Anfield. That means Liverpool could be forced into a difficult situation of having to accept an offer for the player if it is big enough, or risk losing him on the cheap in the near future. ‌ Diaz joined the club from FC Porto in 2022 and has become an important player for the Reds, scoring a total of 41 goals and helping them win four major trophies - one Premier League title, one FA Cup and two Carabao Cups. Liverpool have just signed Hugo Ekitike for around £79m and have been linked with signing Newcastle Alexander Isak too, so they are not short of options up front if Diaz were to leave. However, he does offer cover at left wing should Cody Gakpo suffer an injury and Arne Slot will be unwilling to lose strength in depth, especially with Federico Chiesa looking likely to leave Anfield this summer.

Sarina Wiegman v Montse Tome – managers battling for Euro 2025 glory

Both England boss Sarina Wiegman and Spain coach Montse Tome were on the sidelines for Spain's 1-0 win in Sydney two years ago, but where Wiegman was seeking a second major trophy with the Lionesses, Tome was then assistant to Jorge Vilda. Here, the PA news agency take a look at the two women who will lead their sides out in Basel. What an achievement 🤝 — Lionesses (@Lionesses) July 24, 2025 Wiegman's appointment in September 2021 was a statement from England. The FA hired a manager who had won Euro 2017 with the Netherlands on home soil before guiding her home country to the final of the 2019 World Cup, gaining global recognition as one of the very best in the game. That success has continued with England. Her arrival was delayed by the postponed Tokyo Olympics but Wiegman took over what had been a struggling side and instantly delivered results, culminating in victory at Euro 2022 less than a year into her reign. That success at Wembley made Wiegman the first coach to deliver back-to-back European titles for different nations. They followed it up with a win over world champions the United States before adding the Arnold Clark Cup and the Finalissima to the trophy cabinet. The following year, amid rumours that rival nations wanted to poach Wiegman, England reached the final of the World Cup despite missing several key players, but Olga Carmona's goal broke English hearts as Wiegman finished a World Cup runner-up again. Despite that disappointment, the FA's faith in Wiegman was clear as she signed a new contract through to 2027. Spain's moment of glory in Australia was swiftly followed by controversy. RFEF boss Luis Rubiales kissed forward Jennifer Hermoso during the trophy presentation – for which he was later found guilty of sexual assault – and when he was forced out of the federation, coach Jorge Vilda also followed. Out of that, Tome stepped up from her position as an assistant to become the first female coach of the Spanish team. The former midfielder, capped five times in a playing career during which she won two Spanish titles, one with Levante and one with Barcelona, moved into coaching straight after her retirement in 2018 and was appointed to Vilda's staff in the same year after gaining her UEFA Pro Licence. When she stepped up to the top job in 2023 there were question marks over whether she was ready and although Spain won the Nations League in February 2024, beating France in the final, those critics returned after they finished fourth at the Paris Olympics. But Spain have won every game so far at Euro 2025 and if they finish it off with the trophy on Sunday, those doubters will be silenced.
