
Argentine scientists lead oceanographic expedition in the S. Atlantic
Aboard the research vessel Falkor (too) and using advanced technology, the team is exploring the Mar del Plata Submarine Canyon, uncovering untouched habitats, unusual organisms and clear signs of human impact.
The mission, Underwater Oases of Mar del Plata Canyon, is led by Argentina's National Scientific and Technical Research Council in partnership with the California-based nonprofit Schmidt Ocean Institute.
At the center of the mission is the ROV SuBastian, a remotely operated submersible used for the first time in Argentine waters. The robot records ultra-high-definition video and collects biological and geochemical samples without disturbing the environment.
Thanks to this technology, the expedition is being live-streamed on the Schmidt Ocean Institute's YouTube channel, allowing anyone to tune in and observe the discoveries in real time.
The study area lies along the continental slope off Buenos Aires Province, where the warm Brazil Current meets the cold Falklands Current. This convergence creates a unique ecological zone considered a key biogeographic boundary in the South Atlantic.
There, the research team is collecting samples at multiple stations to study species distribution, physicochemical conditions of the water, sediment dynamics and the presence of microplastics.
More than 30 Argentine specialists are participating in the initiative, representing CONICET research institutes and national universities. The interdisciplinary team includes biologists, geologists, geneticists, ecologists and field technicians who are also developing educational materials and 3D digital models for scientific dissemination.
"We've found animals never before recorded in this area, underwater landscapes that look like something from another planet and behaviors that surprise even experienced scientists," said Daniel Lauretta, chief scientist of the expedition, in a CONICET statement.
"SuBastian is like having a submarine with ultra-sensitive eyes that dives for us and shows everything in stunning detail," he added.
In addition to its scientific value, the project aims to foster public engagement and promote the conservation of vulnerable ecosystems.
The data collected will be released through open-access repositories such as CONICET Digital, OBIS, and GenBank.
This mission is part of a research initiative launched by CONICET more than a decade ago, which included the Continental Slope I, II and III campaigns.
Unlike those efforts, which relied on trawl nets, the current approach allows scientists to observe marine life in its natural habitat and document previously unknown interactions.

More than 400 additional deaths are estimated to be linked to the wildfires that ravaged Los Angeles earlier this year, according to a new study. The figure, published on Wednesday in the medical journal JAMA, looks at deaths that have been attributed to factors caused by the wildfires, like poor air quality and delays in accessing healthcare. It is a higher figure than the official death count of 31 by the Los Angeles County, which tallied deaths caused directly by the fires. The study comes as hundreds of wildfires burn across the US and Canada, prompting air quality advisories in cities like Chicago, Buffalo and New York. The Palisades and Eaton fires tore through Los Angeles in January, destroying thousands of structures and leading to the evacuation of more than 100,000 Los Angeles residents. Researchers said they tallied the figure by looking at all deaths and their causes in Los Angeles during the period of the fires, and comparing it to similar data from previous years. The results show that there were nearly 7% more deaths during the wildfires. Some are attributed to lung and heart conditions exacerbated by smoke or stress, while others are more indirect - like delayed healthcare treatment for dialysis or cancer patients as a result of fire-related disruptions. The authors said that the findings underscore the need for officials to count both direct and indirect fatalities of wildfires and other climate-related emergencies when trying to quantify their impact. "They also highlight the need for improved mortality surveillance during and after wildfire emergencies," the authors said, noting that their figures are provisional as there may have been additional fire-related deaths beyond the scope of the study. The BBC has reached out to Los Angeles County officials for comment on the study's findings. Another study released on Wednesday in JAMA that looked at the aftermath of the 2023 Maui wildfires showed that 22% of adults in the region had reduced lung function, and half displayed symptoms of depression. The fires, which broke out in August 2023 and were the worst to affect Hawaii in recent history, killed at least 102 people and destroyed more than 2,000 structures. The authors of the Maui study said their results show the need for "sustained clinical monitoring and community-based mental health supports" months after a climate disaster. A second study on the Hawaii fires suggests that Maui saw the highest suicide and drug overdose rates in the month of the 2023 wildfires. Wildfires have become more frequent in recent years as a result of climate change, driven by hotter and drier weather that fuels fire spread. In addition to directly threatening lives and structures, smoke from wildfires has been shown to have adverse health effects on people. Wildfire smoke has been found to be harmful to certain immune cells in the lungs, with a toxicity four times greater than particulates from other types of pollution. This can have a long-term impact on cardiovascular health, experts have said. Older people, pregnant women and young children, as well as those with underlying health conditions, such as heart disease or asthma, are more likely to get sick, experts say. Excessive screen time for children linked to later heart health risks

Each additional hour of screen time is associated with an increase in heart risk factors like blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar levels, researchers reported today in the Journal of the American Heart Association. "It's a small change per hour, but when screen time accumulates to three, five or even six hours a day, as we saw in many adolescents, that adds up," lead investigator David Horner, a researcher at the University of Copenhagen in Denmark, said in a news release. "Multiply that across a whole population of children, and you're looking at a meaningful shift in early cardiometabolic risk that could carry into adulthood," Horner added. For the study, researchers pooled data from more than 1,000 participants in two Danish studies of childhood health. Each child received a heart health risk score based on factors like waist size, blood pressure, "good" HDL cholesterol, triglycerides and blood sugar, researchers said. Parents reported on the kids' screen time. Every hour a child or teen spent glued to a screen caused those risk factors to tilt toward the bad, results showed. A child's sleep patterns contributed to this risk, researchers added. Both shorter sleep duration and hitting the sack later intensified the relationship between screen time and heart health risk, results show. Kids and teens who had less sleep showed significantly higher risk associated with the same amount of screen time. "About 12% of the association between screen time and cardiometabolic risk was mediated through shorter sleep duration," Horner said. "These findings suggest that insufficient sleep may not only magnify the impact of screen time but could be a key pathway linking screen habits to early metabolic changes." An artificial intelligence analysis found that kids' blood carried a set of markers -- what researchers called a "screen-time fingerprint" -- that could predict how much time they'd been spending with screens, researchers added. "We also assessed whether screen time was linked to predicted cardiovascular risk in adulthood, finding a positive trend in childhood and a significant association in adolescence," Horner said. "This suggests that screen-related metabolic changes may carry early signals of long-term heart health risk." Since this was an observational study, the research cannot prove a direct cause-and-effect relationship between screen time and heart health, researchers noted. Nevertheless, pediatricians should consider a discussion of children's screen habits during regular check-ups, Horner said. The results also highlight the importance of good sleep to a child's health, said Dr. Amanda Marma Perak, chair of the American Heart Association's Young Hearts Cardiovascular Disease Prevention Committee. Perak, who was not involved in this research, reviewed the findings. "If cutting back on screen time feels difficult, start by moving screen time earlier and focusing on getting into bed earlier and for longer," said Perak, an assistant professor of pediatrics and preventive medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago. Parents also should be prepared to set a good example, she added in a news release. "All of us use screens, so it's important to guide kids, teens and young adults to healthy screen use in a way that grows with them," Perak said. "As a parent, you can model healthy screen use -- when to put it away, how to use it, how to avoid multitasking. And as kids get a little older, be more explicit, narrating why you put away your devices during dinner or other times together." It's also important to teach kids how to entertain themselves without a screen, and to handle the discomfort that comes with boredom, Perak said. "Boredom breeds brilliance and creativity, so don't be bothered when your kids complain they're bored," Perak said. "Loneliness and discomfort will happen throughout life, so those are opportunities to support and mentor your kids in healthy ways to respond that don't involve scrolling." Fear Of AGI Is Driving Harvard And MIT Students To Drop Out
W hen Alice Blair enrolled in the Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a freshman in 2023, she was excited to take computer science courses and meet other people who cared about making sure artificial intelligence is developed in a way that's good for humanity. Now she's taking a permanent leave of absence, terrified that the emergence of 'artificial general intelligence,' a hypothetical AI that can perform a variety of tasks as well as people, could doom the human race. 'I was concerned I might not be alive to graduate because of AGI,' said Blair, who is from Berkeley, California. 'I think in a large majority of the scenarios, because of the way we are working towards AGI, we get human extinction.' She's lined up a contract gig as a technical writer at the Center for AI Safety, a nonprofit focused on AI safety research, where she helps with newsletters and research papers. Blair doesn't plan to head back to MIT. 'I predict that my future lies out in the real world,' she said. Blair's not the only student afraid of the potentially devastating impact that AI will have on the future of humanity if it becomes sentient and decides that people are more trouble than they're worth. 'Extinction-level' risk is possible given how fast AI is being developed, according to a 2024 U.S. Department of State-commissioned report. Efforts to build AI with safeguards to prevent this from happening have exploded in the last few years, both from billionaire-funded nonprofits like the Center for AI Safety and companies like Anthropic. A lot of researchers disagree with that premise—'human extinction seems to be very very unlikely,' New York University professor emeritus Gary Marcus, who studies the intersection of psychology and AI, told Forbes . 'But working on AI safety is noble, and very little current work has provided answers.' Now, the field of AI safety and its promise to prevent the worst effects of AI is motivating young people to drop out of school. 'If your career is about to be automated by the end of the decade, then every year spent in college is one year subtracted from your short career.' Nikola Jurković Physics and computer science major Adam Kaufman left Harvard University last fall to work full-time at Redwood Research, a nonprofit examining deceptive AI systems that could act against human interests. 'I'm quite worried about the risks and think that the most important thing to work on is mitigating them,' said Kaufman. 'Somewhat more selfishly, I just think it's really interesting. I work with the smartest people I've ever met on super important problems.' He's not alone. His brother, roommate and girlfriend have also taken leave from Harvard for similar reasons. The three of them currently work for OpenAI. Other students are terrified of AGI, but less because it could destroy the human race and more because it could wreck their career before it's even begun. Half of 326 Harvard students surveyed by the school's undergraduate association and AI safety club were worried about AI's impact on their job prospects. 'If your career is about to be automated by the end of the decade, then every year spent in college is one year subtracted from your short career,' said Nikola Jurković, who graduated from Harvard this May and served as the AI safety group's AGI preparedness lead. 'I personally think AGI is maybe four years away and full automation of the economy is maybe five or six years away.' Already, some companies are hiring fewer interns and recent graduates because AI is capable of doing their tasks. Others are conducting mass layoffs. Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has warned that AI could eliminate half of all entry-level white-collar jobs and cause unemployment to rise to 20% in the next few years. Students are terrified that this shift will dramatically accelerate when true AGI arrives, though when that might happen is up for debate. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman thinks AGI will be developed before 2029, while Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis predicts that it'll come in the next five to 10 years. Jurković believes it might arrive even sooner: He co-authored a timeline forecast for the AI Futures Project, which also predicts the ability to automate most white-collar jobs by 2027. Others disagree: 'It is extremely unlikely that AGI will come in the next five years,' Marcus said. 'It's just marketing hype to pretend otherwise when so many core problems (like hallucinations and reasoning errors) remain unsolved.' Marcus has noted that throwing more and more data and computing power at AI models has so far failed to produce models sophisticated enough to do many of the same kinds of tasks as humans. While questions remain about when AGI will occur and how valuable a college degree will be in a world upended by human-level artificial intelligence, students are itching to pursue their careers now, before, they worry, it's too late. That's led many to drop out to start their own companies. Since 2023, students have been leaving college to chase the AI gold rush, drawn to the success stories of generations past like Altman and Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Anysphere CEO Michael Truell, now 24, and Mercor CEO Brendan Foody, 22, dropped out of MIT and Georgetown University respectively to pursue their startups. Anysphere was last valued at $9.9 billion, while Mercor has raised over $100 million. With AGI threatening to completely replace human labor, some students see a ticking clock—and a huge opportunity. 'I felt that there's a limited window to act in order to have a hand on the steering wheel,' said Jared Mantell, who was studying economics and computer science at Washington University in St. Louis before dropping out to focus full-time on his startup dashCrystal, which aims to automate design of electronics. The company has raised over $800,000 so far at a valuation of around $20 million. Dropping out means losing out on the benefits of a college degree. According to the Pew Research Center, younger adults with a bachelor's degree or more generally make at least $20,000 more than their peers without one. And in a world where entry-level jobs are being decimated by AI, lacking a degree could limit job prospects for young people even more. Even the cofounder of Y Combinator, a startup accelerator known for funding young founders who have dropped out, thinks students should stay in school. 'Don't drop out of college to start or work for a startup,' Paul Graham posted on X in July. 'There will be other (and probably better) startup opportunities, but you can't get your college years back.' Blair doesn't think that dropping out of school is for everyone. 'It's very difficult and taxing to drop out of college early and get a job,' she said. 'This is something that I would only recommend to extremely resilient individuals who felt they have been adequately prepared to get a job by college already.'
