Somy Ali on supporting LGBTQIA+: You deserve safety and dignity

Somy Ali
has long supported those facing abuse and displacement. Through her non-profit NGO, she has worked closely with survivors from diverse backgrounds, including many from the LGBTQAI+ community, offering legal assistance, shelter, and long-term support.
She shares, 'Some of the stories I've come across have been deeply distressing. Many LGBTQAI+ individuals come to us after being forced out of their homes or facing situations where their safety is at risk. There's nothing wrong with being who you are — but unfortunately, not everyone sees it that way.'
Somy recalls helping an individual who faced serious threats due to his identity. She says, 'We were able to support him through relocation, provide shelter, and connect him with legal resources.
He's now in a safer environment and working towards rebuilding his life.'
Even after finding safety, survivors often carry emotional wounds that take time to heal. 'One of the most common concerns I hear is, 'Will you still help me if I tell you everything?' My answer is always — yes. We see you, and we are here to support you,' she says.
Pride Month, for Somy, is a time to reaffirm this commitment. 'Back when I was a student at Nova Southeastern University, I helped start the first Gay and Lesbian student group there.

That experience shaped how I view advocacy — it's about creating safe spaces where people can share, heal, and be seen,' she says.
Each year, her NGO hosts quiet gatherings during Pride Month to support survivors, but the work, she stresses, is year-round. She asserts, 'For us, Pride is about creating room for every story — not just visibility, but belonging.'
She notes that challenges still persist, especially for those navigating economic hardship.
She says, 'Many of the LGBTQAI+ individuals we work with face multiple vulnerabilities — housing instability, lack of employment, and limited family support. While conversations around inclusion have grown, many still struggle with safety and acceptance.'
Somy believes lasting change happens through empathy. She says, 'People respond to stories. When they hear what someone has experienced, it opens a door to understanding. You build bridges through listening, compassion, and respect. That's the only way forward — for all of us.'

‘Smita Patil had a sense about her failing health,' recalls veteran journalist on her final days

Smita Patil's sudden demise continues to resonate, as veteran journalist Bhawana Somaaya recalls her fragile health and devotion to motherhood. Following her unexpected passing, a custody battle ensued over her son, Prateik Babbar, who initially grappled with his identity, torn between his parents' legacies. He now embraces his full name, Prateik Smita Patil, honoring his mother's memory. Smita Patil , one of Indian cinema's most iconic and gifted actresses, left an indelible mark on the screen before her untimely death at just 31. Decades later, her passing continues to evoke deep emotion—not just among her admirers but also those who knew her closely. In heartfelt recollections, veteran journalist Bhawana Somaaya and her son, actor Prateik Babbar , reflect on Smita's final days, her fragile health, and the emotional journey that followed her loss. In a conversation with CNN-News18, the veteran journalist described Smita as a grounded woman—deeply in love and embracing motherhood. She recalled that Smita had always struggled with fragile health and was keen to spend time with her newborn son. Bhawana suggested that Smita may have sensed her declining condition, as her health deteriorated swiftly and unexpectedly in her final days. She further recalled that she was attending a fundraiser when Smita Patil suddenly fell ill. Upon returning home, she received news that Smita had been admitted to the hospital. Before she could reach there, she was informed that Smita had been moved to the ICU and placed on a ventilator, indicating the seriousness of her condition. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Top 5 Dividend Stocks for May 2025 Seeking Alpha Read Now Undo In a recent interview, Prateik Babbar opened up about the emotional aftermath of his mother Smita Patil's passing. He revealed that a custody battle followed soon after his birth, with both his father Raj Babbar 's family and his maternal grandparents seeking custody. The court eventually granted custody to his maternal side. He also shared that there was confusion over his surname—his passport initially read 'Prateik Smit Babbar,' a misspelling that stayed with him through his early years. Prateik, who now goes by Prateik Smita Patil, initially used the name Prateik Babbar in his early films. Reflecting on his past, he shared that he once struggled with his identity and felt conflicted about carrying either of his parents' surnames. During a period of emotional turmoil, he chose to go by just 'Prateik,' distancing himself from both sides of his family, whom he associated with personal trauma. Over time, however, he came to terms with his past and embraced his full identity, now honoring his late mother by including her name.

When Pride and Prejudice co-star Keira Knightley gushed over the moment which won Matthew Macfayden iconic Mr Darcy role

Jane Austen's legacy is probably what's single-handedly keeping the concept of romance alive, even as the world descends into the dark depths of modern-day dating. And Pride & Prejudice, for as long as the Sun rises in the East, will reign supreme. The headstrong, quietly passionate, and burning desire driving Elisabeth Bennet's love story with Mr. Darcy IS the blueprint of what every woman deserves. And it's so, so incredibly hard to get right when we're speaking about cinematisation. It's been a few times over — the 6-part BBC series being an incredibly notable watch everyone keeps running back to. But in more Hollywood-esque mainstream context, the 2005 Pride & Prejudice takes the cake and the bakery. Directed by Joe Wright and led by Keira Knightley and Matthew Macfayden as Elisabeth and Mr. Darcy, 'iconic' and 'cult' aren't words big enough to shoulder its cultural impact. Now while Keira and Matthew's seamless chemistry continues to live in our heads rent-free, did you know that there were several others being considered to step into Mr. Darcy's shoes? During a Vanity Fair chat with Keira and Rosamund Pike (who incidentally played Jane Bennet in the production), the latter asked, "You must've met a few Darcys" to which the former promptly replied, "Yes, there were a few Darcys, and it was very clear that it was Matthew from the get-go. He's just such a nice man". Oh, we agree! But what was it that won Matthew the role? In a 2005 chat with Entertainment Tonight, Keira excitedly spoke of the moment everyone in the room knew that the current millennium's Mr. Darcy had been knighted! She shared, "It wasn't in the script, we'd nearly kiss and then not. It's just something that naturally happened, in the audition, and everybody around the table went, 'ohhh, that's perfect!'. So it was one of those really nice moments of just two people who knew our characters really well, and it just melted together really nicely. And Joe was just like, 'right, do it, go for it!', which is great". A post shared by Entertainment Tonight (@entertainmenttonight) All of this to definitely time for a re-watch. Pride & Prejudice will complete 20 years of having having us swooning, this September 16.

South Africa's successful chase of 282 runs at Lord's stands as the joint second-highest in the venue's history, with only West Indies' 342 in 1984 surpassing it. The crucial 147-run partnership between Markram and Bavuma, spanning Day 3 and Day 4, proved decisive against Australia's bowling attack. Keshav Maharaj, in an emotional post-match interview with Graeme Smith, said, "It's special, it's an honour to lift the cup for everyone out here and back home.
