B'luru-M'luru VB express inches closer with ghat stretch electrification
Mangaluru: Electrification of the critical Sakleshpur–Subrahmanya Road ghat section of the South Western Railway (SWR), Mysuru division, is expected to be completed by Oct, potentially bringing the proposed Bengaluru–Mangaluru Vande Bharat Express closer to reality.
However, railway officials said that the final decision to launch a Vande Bharat service rests with the govt and railway board.
Due to safety-related work and the ongoing electrification efforts on the Ghat section, one pair of trains per day (a total of three pairs weekly) has been cancelled from May 31 to Nov 2.
SWR Mysuru division divisional railway manager (DRM)
Mudit Mittal
told TOI that the entire stretch on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru section is electrified except for the 36 km from Donigal to Shiribagilu.
"This section is one of the most difficult, due to the lack of road access. We have to transport all materials by train," he said.
Although six day trains were cancelled overall, only one pair operates on this stretch each day. "All three affected train pairs have similar timings while traversing the ghat section. Hence, we have blocked one path to dedicate it entirely for the movement of material trains," Mittal said.
There are currently five pairs of passenger trains operating through the ghat section. Of these, four pairs run between Bengaluru and Mangaluru, and one pair connects Vijayapura and Mangaluru, the only train linking North Karnataka with the coastal region. Despite the cancellations, three pairs of passenger trains will continue to operate on the Bengaluru-Mangaluru route, ensuring minimal disruption, said DRM Mittal.
Explaining why freight trains were not considered for cancellation, Mittal said, "With the monsoon approaching, there are chances of roads being closed due to heavy rainfall. We did not want to divert freight movement, which is critical, so we reserved the cancelled passenger train slots for moving electrification equipment."
The ghat section has unique operational rules due to its steep terrain. Normally, railway routes are divided into small segments known as block sections.
However, in this ghat, two blocks are combined into one due to the terrain's complexity. Since it is a single-line section, a train must clear the entire stretch before another train can enter. During the work window, a four-hour block is scheduled daily. Material trains depart simultaneously from Shiribagilu and Donigal, taking about 1.5 hours to travel and another 1.5 hours to return.
One hour is allocated for unloading, he explained. Also, the maximum speed of any train in this ghat section is 30 kmph.
The electrification work will be carried out by Rail India Technical and Economic Service (RITES). DRM Mittal expressed confidence that the project will be completed within the targeted timeframe.

Dec date for eway missing link to open
Pune: The missing link project along the express way which is expected to reduce travel time between Pune and Mumbai by atleast 25 minutes may be completed only be end of this year, MSRDC officials told TOI on Friday. MSRDC Vice Chairman Anil Gaikwad told TOI that the missing link project is 95% complete. However, the work of the cable-stayed bridge in the Tiger Valley is still underway. "We do not want to rush this stretch and it has to be constructed properly as it involves highly skilled technical work. We are expecting that this stretch will only be completed by December 2025 considering the challenges," he told TOI. The earlier deadline for the opening of the project was August 2025. The project has two components_the tunnel and the cable stayed bridge. While the tunnel work is over, the bridge work can be taken after rains. Authorities have cited heavy rains and strong winds as the main reasons for the delay and said they do not want to compromise with safety as the work site is in a deep valley with high wind flow and heavy showers in monsoon. The missing link includes a 10.60 km long tunnel which is constructed and the adjoining cable-stayed bridge being built over the Tiger Valley which is incomplete. While the substructure work of the bridge is completed, the work of installing the cables is in progress. The bridge is being constructed at an elevation of over 180 from the ground. Once completed, the missing link is expected to reduce travel time between Pune-Mumbai by at least 25 minutes while the sharp curves on the current ghat section will be minimised reducing the risk of accidents. The traffic congestion in the ghat section is expected to reduce due to this missing link project. The overall cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs 6,695 crore. MSRDC appointed 22 private players to develop and operate wayside amenities along the Samruddhi corridor MSRDC has appointed 22 private players to develop and operate full-fledged wayside amenities along the Mumbai-Nagpur Samruddhi corridor, MSRDC Vice Chairman Anilkumar Gaikwad confirmed. The wayside amenities for motorists such as fuel stations, garages, eateries, public conveniences, and first aid clinics are missing, heightening the risk of accidents along the way. To fill the gap, the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has appointed private players to develop these amenities and the full facilities are expected to come up in stages in the next two years. Around 10 acres of land each will be dedicated for these locations. The Samruddhi Mahamarg spans 701 km, which is currently open to traffic. RPF's Commandos for Railway Security to protect J-K Vande Bharat trains
'The RPF's Commandos for Railway Security (CORAS) have been deployed on Vande Bharat trains on USBRL (Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link) between Katra and Kashmir,' an official told PTI. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday flagged off the Vande Bharat train service between Katra and Srinagar in J-K — the first train connection between the Kashmir valley and the Jammu region. Salgandan (Ramban), Jun 6 (PTI) Commando forces of the Railway Protection Force (RPF), popularly known as CORAS, have been deployed for the security of Vande Bharat trains on the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla railway line, ferrying passengers between the Kashmir Valley and Katra, the base camp of the Mata Vaishno Devi shrine in Jammu and Kashmir. The commandos made their presence felt on the inaugural trains flagged off by the prime minister. Each of the two Vande Bharat trains will have 15 commandos and a supervisor each on board to ensure the security and safety of train travel, officials said. The units have been recently brought from outside and will be based in the Budgam area of the Kashmir valley and the Katra belt of Reasi district. After focusing on high-risk security operations, especially in areas with threats like Naxalite insurgency, this is the first time CORAS has been deployed in J-K. With the official flag-off by the prime minister, the Indian Railways will commence regular operations of the two new Vande Bharat trains on June 7. The trains will run six days a week, with Tuesdays reserved for maintenance, Railway officials said. To begin with, the trains will operate between Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra and Srinagar, as the Jammu Tawi station is currently under redevelopment under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, they added. These trains are not only fast but also tailored for Kashmir's challenging climate. Equipped with advanced heating systems, frost-proof windshields and comfortable interiors, they offer year-round travel, even in harsh winter conditions, the officials said. This step has been taken in view of the sensitive nature of travel in J-K. The prime minister dedicated the USBRL project to the nation by inaugurating the world's highest railway bridge on the Chenab River. The 272-km-long USBRL project, constructed at a cost of around Rs 43,780 crore, includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges, the officials said. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir valley and the rest of the country, aiming to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration, they added.
