False alarm at Springfield school causes hard lockdown
SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A false safety alarm led to a brief hard lockdown at a Springfield middle school Tuesday afternoon.
In an email sent out to families of Washington Middle School, Springfield Public Schools PIO Rachel Dyas said that at 12:44 p.m., one of the school's Centegix badge systems was activated. This triggered a hard lockdown at the school for a short time.

Washington administration immediately responded to the classroom to ensure everyone's safety, and it was found that there was never a real emergency. A badge that was not being worn was unintentionally activated while inside a bag.
The staff was then notified over the intercom in under one minute that there was an all clear.
'The Centegix system is an important safety tool designed to quickly alert staff and emergency responders,' Dyas said. 'Today's activation involved multiple presses, which automatically triggered a full lockdown and notified 911.'
She also said that for smaller incidents, a three-button alert should be used to communicate with the office. Within a three-minute timeframe, the school's administration was able to call 911 and notify law enforcement to inform them that there was no situation that required their assistance.

Crime Stoppers seeking tips in attempted $3,200 theft from Champaign Meijer
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (WCIA) — The Champaign Police Department is asking for help through Crime Stoppers in finding the people who stole $800 worth of merchandise from Meijer, but tried to get away with four times more in value. Officials said the theft happened the night of May 28. At approximately 9:12 p.m., three people walked into Champaign's Meijer at 2401 North Prospect Avenue and loaded several totes with merchandise, which they then put into a cart. One of the subjects was wearing a black and yellow Meijer jacket, and they pushed the cart outside and met up with the others. Two teens hurt, one critically, in Champaign shooting Sunday night The total amount of merchandise they had was more than $3,200, but loss prevention staff confronted them and recovered 75% of what the trio tried to steal. Officials said they still got away with $800 worth of merchandise. The trio was recorded on camera as the theft happened. Two airlifted after crash involving concrete truck in Coles Co.
COLES COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — Two people involved in a crash in Coles County were injured and flown to a nearby hospital Monday morning. Illinois State Police responded to I-57 in Humboldt around 9:30 a.m. The two-vehicle rollover accident happened in the northbound lane near milepost 197. 22-year-old Danville man dead after motorcycle crash When troopers arrived, they learned that the accident involved a GMC Acadia and a concrete truck. The Acadia rolled over on its passenger side in the median. Two passengers in the vehicle were brought to a nearby hospital via Life Flight.
