Arteta will be 'more disappointed' with refereeing than players

BBC News15-05-2025

Arsenal may have the most red cards in the Premier League this season, but I do look at some of the scenarios and question whether they were all sending-offs.You look back earlier on in the season to Declan Rice's second yellow and ask was it really a second yellow? Should they have been two yellow cards? I would say no. Then you look at the Gabriel Martinelli's where some would argue it was the same phase of play, but it was two phases because there was a throw-in and then a free-kick. You think back to a William Saliba one on the halfway-line and he got sent off. Even with Myles Lewis-Skelly, you think of these tactical fouls that you can often get away with in the game.I do feel sorry for Arsenal in a way because of the red cards they have received. I have heard Mikel Arteta's comments recently when he mentioned that some of the rules had changed mid-way through the season, whether that is actually the case I don't know, or whether it was him just throwing something out there. But I do think it is quite harsh that they have received as many reds as they when you look back at the incidents and break them down.Arteta will not be as frustrated with the red cards from the players' reactions, but more so the inconsistency of refereeing. He will not be too disappointed in his players for those moments but more disappointed in the referee or officiating of the cards. The issue for Arteta is that they have probably proved costly because those players end up being suspended and they are big players that they have then maybe ended up dropping points they might not have done had they been available.Fara Williams was speaking to BBC Sport's Nicola Pearson

'What's not to get excited about?' - your views on 'real deal' Nygren

We asked you for your views after Benjamin Nygren signed a five-year deal with what some of you said:Gordy: A good signing and hopefully just the start - we need cover all over the pitch. Centre back, right and left-back cover is essential and a goal-scoring centre forward, while holding onto to what we have, unless a massive offer comes in that will help buy other players. We need to show more ambition in the transfer market this season to be successful at home and in Nygren scored a hat-trick against Fenerbahce in Europe, and is obviously a very good What's not to get excited about? Another Scandinavian with a clear determination to advance his career and full of positivity. I've seen him play for Sweden and he has bags of energy and drive. Almost looks like he's a mini Daizen, but let's not burden the boy with too much The signing of Nygren could turn out to be a very shrewd piece of business. He appears to be a player on an upward path and with the guidance of Brendan Rodgers, we can hopefully continue his progression. If we can get two/three good seasons out of him then we could end up with a £30m+ asset. Either way it certainly looks like £1.5m well Nygren looks like the real deal. It's difficult to make one's mind up based on highlight reels, right enough. He is saying the right things in the media, regarding his winning mentality, his experience and what he thinks will be expected of him while wearing the hoops. I just hope he has the longevity to do it season after season, on a cold wet Wednesday night in the north east of Scotland!

Mulligan 'will thrive' at Hibs, but does this end Triantis talk?

We asked you for your views after Josh Mulligan signed a four-year deal with what you said:Laurence: I'm loving the way that Hibs are quietly going out their business.A solid looking back-up 'keeper, Rocky [Bushiri] re-signed for three years and now Josh Mulligan who caught the eye last season with we can get Nectar Triantis over the line too, then the new season looks very positive for to David Gray and Malky Brilliant signing .Good young Scottish talent with good experience at a young age. He will thrive at Great signing of an excellent player and I think we can forget about Triantis, we cannot compete with the fee or wages involved in any So far, so good. Reasonable signings. Let's get a good centre-half now and enter the fray. It's time to get up there and offer a serious Very good signing who will add strength to an already very good squad. Hopefully Hibs push on and put a stronger challenge to the Old Firm next Looks like a brilliant signing. A very versatile player who can play in multiple positions, so it will be very interesting to see how he settles in. 😄

Man Utd open to Andre Onana loan exit as Ruben Amorim identifies new No.1

Andre Onana has endured a tricky couple of seasons at Manchester United at Old Trafford and it appears that Ruben Amorim has finally decided what to do with him ahead of next term Manchester United are reportedly willing to sanction a loan move for Andre Onana after stumbling into a real issue regarding his future. The Cameroonian international has endured a tricky couple of seasons since his arrival from Inter Milan. High-profile errors have blighted his performances and put his position as number one in jeopardy. United are open to letting him leave and would apparently prefer a permanent sale. ‌ But Onana's high wages have made an exit this summer tricky and Red Devils chiefs are now having to get creative to move him on. According to The Sun, United are open to letting Onana leave on loan. ‌ Monaco - who have recently signed ex-United midfielder Paul Pogba - have been linked with a move but have struggled to get a deal over the line. It is said that United are now awaiting approaches and would prefer to send the 29-year-old to Europe as opposed to a Premier League rival. Speaking earlier this month, Onana appeared to hint that he was also open to an exit. He said: "Will I leave? I don't know, we'll see!" While Onana's future remains up in the air, United have already launched their search for a new number one. Aston Villa 's Emi Martinez remains their number one target but a deal for the 2022 World Cup winner is expected to be expensive. Other options include Botafogo's John Victor, Porto star Diogo Costa and Cruz Azul number one Kevin Mier. Former United stopper Ben Foster believes that Martinez would be the outstanding candidate should Onana be moved on. He said: 'It's a brutal league, the Premier League, and I kind of think [over] the last two seasons that he [Onana] hasn't done enough to prove that he is a Manchester United number one. ‌ 'I think he's got ability, and like so many other Man United players, he'd go elsewhere and probably flourish. I think that's probably going to be the case with him as well. If the opportunity does come to sign somebody like Emi Martinez, they've got to go for it. He's still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. 'A lot of people said this season, probably not up to the standard of the previous two years, but still one of the best goalkeepers in the world. 'You've got to have a strong spine in any football team. If you get the goalie right, you get a couple of strikers in, Bruno's going to be staying now. It's a great start to the transfer window for them.' Join our new MAN UTD WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Manchester United content from Mirror Football.
