Al-Nasr mosque in West Bank's Nablus set ablaze during Israeli army raid

The Israeli army on Friday raided several mosques in Nablus, located in the northern occupied West Bank, setting fire to the historic Al-Nasr Mosque in the Old City.
According to the Palestinian official news agency Wafa, large Israeli military forces stormed multiple mosques, vandalizing their interiors. The agency reported that Israeli forces deliberately set fire to the Al-Nasr Mosque and blocked firefighters from extinguishing the blaze.
Eyewitnesses told Anadolu that the fire completely destroyed the imam's quarters, damaging the mosque's walls and carpets.
Al-Nasr Mosque, one of Nablus's most significant historical landmarks, was originally built as a Roman-era church before being converted into a mosque in 1187.
The Palestinian Ministry of Religious Affairs condemned the Israeli raids on Old City mosques and the deliberate burning of the Al-Nasr Mosque.
In a statement, the ministry said, 'Israeli forces stormed Al-Nasr Mosque in Bab al-Saha in the Old City at dawn today, set it on fire, and prevented Nablus municipal firefighters from extinguishing the blaze, causing extensive destruction.'
'Israeli forces raided several mosques in the Old City without warning, desecrating their interiors,' it added.
Nablus Endowments Director Nasser Al-Salman also denounced the 'brutal Israeli assault' on Nablus's mosques.
'Such actions have been unprecedented since the Nakba of 1948, and they reflect Israel's blatant disregard for religious, moral, and international norms that guarantee the right to worship and access holy sites,' he said, according to the statement.
Salman urged human rights and legal organizations to take immediate action to prevent Israel from continuing its violations against religious and historical sites.
Tensions have been running high across the West Bank, where at least 930 Palestinians have been killed and nearly 7,000 others injured in attacks by the Israeli army and illegal settlers since the start of the Gaza war on October 7, 2023, according to the Health Ministry.
In July, the International Court of Justice declared Israel's long-standing occupation of Palestinian territories illegal, calling for the evacuation of all settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Israel strike on Lebanon kills two
BEIRUT: Lebanon said an Israeli drone strike on Tuesday killed a man and his son in a southern village, the latest deadly attack despite a November ceasefire, with Israel claiming the two. The Lebanese health ministry said in a statement that 'an Israeli enemy drone carried out a strike in the village of Shebaa, killing two people and wounding one'. The two dead were a father and his son, with the state-run National News Agency saying the man wounded was also his son. The Israeli military said it had killed a Hezbollah member and an operative with the Lebanese Resistance Brigades, which is affiliated with the group. A military statement said the two men were 'handling weapons used by Hezbollah for terrorist purposes and for observation of (Israeli) soldiers in the area', near the border. UN peacekeepers say troops attacked by individuals in south Lebanon
BEIRUT: United Nations peacekeepers said rock-throwing individuals confronted them during a patrol on Tuesday in south Lebanon, calling repeated targeting of their troops 'unacceptable'. The UN Interim Forces in Lebanon (UNIFIL), deployed since 1978 to separate Lebanon and Israel, sits on a five-member committee to supervise the ceasefire between Israel and the Hezbollah. In a statement, UNIFIL said peacekeepers conducting 'a planned patrol' coordinated with the Lebanese army were 'confronted by a group of individuals in civilian clothing in the vicinity of Hallusiyat al-Tahta, in southern Lebanon'. 'The group attempted to obstruct the patrol using aggressive means, including throwing stones at the peacekeepers,' the statement read, adding that 'one peacekeeper was struck' but no injuries were reported. The situation was defused when the Lebanese army intervened, allowing the peacekeeping force to continue its patrol. 'It is unacceptable that UNIFIL peacekeepers continue to be targeted,' the statement added. UNIFIL spokesman Andrea Tenenti told AFP a Finnish soldier was slapped during the confrontation.
