
Boat to bridge: Madh-Versova link awaits green nod
With a length 2.06 km, the bridge will span the Versova creek between the Versova and Madh jetties. Currently, the quickest way to cross the creek is by boat, taking under 5 minutes and costing ₹10-15, more if there's a bike involved. But this route is not an option for four-wheelers or during the monsoon, when boats can't ply. The alternative is a 22-km, 90-minute-long drive by road through JP Road, Link Road and Mith Chowky.
The Madh-Versova bridge will provide an under 5-minute alternative, at a cost of ₹2,395-3,984 crore. It will also double as a connector to the Versova end of the Versova-Bhayandar Coastal Road, offering commuters from Madh, Malad and the suburbs another entry onto the Coastal Road, as well as a quick route to Versova.
After remaining dormant for almost 60 years, plans for the bridge were resurrected in 2015 and tendering was done in 2019. 'We've been waiting for this bridge for over 50 years,' said Kiran Koli, a fisherman from Madh. 'Amenities such as hospitals, schools, colleges, etc, are better in Versova and all of us in Madh, Aksa, Bhatti, Erangal, will be able to access them. Even for us fishermen, diesel and ice costs more. Going to Malad for these supplies takes two hours.'
Before plans could gather momentum, the Union environment ministry sent the BMC back to the drawing board, asking them to come up with a design that would minimise the impact on the environment, due to the thriving mangroves in the area.
'This is why we came up with a cable-stayed design, which reduces the number of stilts required. The stainless steel pylon – chosen so to withstand the salty sea air – will stand 100 meters high,' said an official with the BMC's bridges department. 'The alignment too was changed to ensure the approach road at Versova goes on the outskirts of the fishing villages there, so it doesn't affect them.'
With the BMC finally receiving the Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) nod from the central government in early 2024, they restarted the tendering process in March, and work orders were issues in September. While the contract cost is ₹2,395 crore, the remaining ₹1,598 crore is for overheads.
'The Madh-Versova bridge is crucial as it takes incredibly long to get there by road,' said Dhaval Shah, co-founder of the Andheri-Lokhandwala Oshiwara Citizens Association (LOCA). 'But the BMC should ensure that road infrastructure at both ends of the bridge, in Versova and Madh, is wide and good enough to handle the volumes of traffic. The bridge will be used by those living in the northern suburbs to get to Versova and further south, as it will offer an alternative to the congested Link Road, even before the Coastal Road project is in full swing.'

BMC Colaba school's English-medium students to be relocated

The shift became necessary after both the primary and secondary school buildings on the Colaba campus were declared dangerous and slated for demolition. The campus housed eight mediums of instruction, with a total of 2,800 students. While students from Marathi, Hindi, Kannada, and Urdu sections were relocated to nearby municipal schools, students from kindergarten to Class 8 of the English-medium section were asked to attend online classes since July. Parents had argued that virtual learning was ineffective, especially for younger children, and had urged the civic body to find a physical space. Many households had only one smartphone to share among siblings; parents found purchasing a mobile data plan expensive, especially when students were frequently interrupted in the narrow lanes and crowded rooms where they resided. 'We chose this school for its good teachers. Online learning is no substitute,' said a parent of a Class 5 student. Some parents said officials had promised a relocation to another school, but were instead asked to attend online classes. BMC officials said finding an alternative venue has been a challenge. 'The Colaba Market location was the only option currently available to us. Until we finalise on a location, the school will continue to remain in this building,' an official added. Parents have welcomed the relocation. However, they continue to press for a permanent solution. 'We are relieved for now, but the civic body must plan so our children's education is not disrupted again,' said another parent.

Will take 2 years to stop dumping waste at TTS: Officials
Bhubaneswar: Plans to ensure zero open dumping of waste is still a distant dream in the city, with the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) still shifting more than 50% of total daily municipal waste to the temporary transit station (TTS) in Gadakana. This indicates that around 300 metric tonnes of waste out of a total of 800 MT is processed at the micro composting centres (MCC)s and material recovery facilities (MRF)s. Officials said that including the proposed waste-to-methane project, the upcoming mega MRF and other methods of on-spot waste processing, it will take BMC at least another two years to stop dumping at TTS. Wet waste, which constitutes 60% of the total solid waste, is processed at MCCs, while dry waste is processed at MRFs. People living near the TTS have been opposing the dumping and in-situ processing of waste at the facility due to the stench. "Now MCCs and MRFs take care of 300 MT of waste. The proposed bio-methane plant will require 200 MT of waste. Additionally, the conversion of waste into refuse-derived fuel (RDF) at TTS helps dispose of around 100 MT daily, which is sent to a cement factory. Earlier, sanitation workers of BMC visited Indore to learn about the ways they convert waste into energy. The exposure visit helped them learn the entire process, starting from waste segregation at source, handling green waste and shredding machine, environment in the plant, managing stores and other aspects of the methane unit. BMC officials said Indore has set up a successful model of turning segregated municipal waste into methane gas. The Indore civic body is selling the methane gas and, in turn, using the amount in other civic works and in different aspects of solid waste management. Through bio-mining, 10 lakh tonnes of legacy waste were processed and landfilled. After the National Green Tribunal (NGT) directed all civic bodies in India in 2021 to stop the practice, BMC stopped waste transportation to Daruthenga, a dump site on the city's outskirts, and started MCCs and MRFs. Feeding Pigeons To Remain Banned: Bombay HC Reiterates Decision Amid Protest

The Bombay High Court on Wednesday reiterated its ban on feeding pigeons at Mumbai's kabutarkhanas, directing the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to continue prosecuting those who defy the restrictions. The order comes days after the Supreme Court refused to intervene, observing that proceedings are still pending before the high court. 'Parallel indulgence by this court is not proper. Petitioner can move the high court for modification of the order," a bench of Justices JK Maheshwari and Vijay Bishnoi said on August 11. Hearing a batch of petitions from animal lovers challenging the demolition of decades-old kabutarkhanas, the high court had earlier stayed demolition but barred feeding. On July 30, it warned that continued violations amounted to a 'public nuisance likely to spread diseases and endanger human life," ordering cases to be registered under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The court had also flagged pigeon breeding and large gatherings at kabutarkhanas as a 'grave social concern," stressing the ruling was in the 'larger interest of societal health, from children to senior citizens." The BMC, defending its crackdown, cited medical studies linking pigeon droppings and feathers to asthma, lung fibrosis, hypersensitivity, and pneumonitis, warning that the damage is often detected only after it becomes irreversible. Petitioners, including Pallavi Sachin Patil, argued that pigeon feeding is a religious custom among Hindus and Jains, with 51 feeding spots operating in the city for decades. They said health risks were overstated and suggested alternatives such as bird towers to allow coexistence. The ban has sparked widespread protests. On August 6, hundreds of devotees clashed with police at Dadar's kabutarkhana, tearing down barricades and tarpaulin sheets set up to stop feeding.
