Dom Nichols, Cam Brandt impressing Michigan football senior EDGE Derrick Moore in spring
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- If you listen to what Michigan football players and coaches have been saying since spring ball started, you'll notice some consistencies. One of them is the constant mention of sophomore edge rusher Dom Nichols.
Nichols played in just five games in 2024 and notched only three tackles. But he's been getting a ton of hype, particularly from his teammates, but also his coaches. WolverinesWire asked senior edge rusher Derrick Moore on Wednesday what has made the second-year defensive end so good, and he couldn't just speak about him singularly. Much like Led Zeppelin song 'Heartbreaker' cannot be played on the radio without 'Living Loving Maid' following, you can't take Nichols without his junior edge rushing teammate.
"I'm going to also pick Cam Brandt. Cam Brandt and Dom be kind of like a similarity to me and TJ," Moore said. "Same exact personalities from both sides of the ball and it's kind of crazy because I'm a quiet guy, Cam a quiet guy, TJ and Dom kind of got their own little personal bond and relationship, but they got the same similarities.
"But for them two guys, man, I'm really excited to see what they're going to bring to the table this year. Both young guys who's stepping into their leadership role and they've been waiting and now I feel like them guys are ready for their time. They've just been like the sponge in a room. They took in all the knowledge and feedback and they saw everything with the older guys like me, TJ and J. Stew did and it just all carried over to them and now I see them stepping up, saying stuff to the younger guys that's here now and I'm just really excited to see what they're going to bring this year."
The duo were impressive in the ReliaQuest Bowl against Alabama with both crashing down on quarterback Jalen Milroe forcing him to fumble deep in Crimson Tide territory. Brandt and Nichols are expected to be the two primary reserves at edge rusher when Moore and fellow senior TJ Guy come out of the game.
While Nichols is still awaiting his first career sack, Brandt actually was quite productive as a reserve last year, managing to get three sacks and that forced fumble in 2024.

Denny Hamlin wins at Michigan for his 3rd NASCAR Cup Series victory of the season

BROOKLYN, Mich. (AP) — Denny Hamlin outlasted the competition at Michigan International Speedway, winning his third NASCAR Cup Series race this season and the 57th of his career on Sunday. Hamlin, in the No. 11 Toyota, went low to pass William Byron on the 197th of 200 laps and pulled away from the pack. The 44-year-old was prepared to leave his team to join his fiancée, Jordan Fish, who is due to give birth to their third child, a boy. Hamlin said he would skip next week's race in Mexico City if necessary to witness the birth. He's also co-owner of 23XI Racing with Michael Jordan, which is involved in a lawsuit against NASCAR. Chris Buescher finished second, followed by Ty Gibbs, Bubba Wallace and Kyle Larson. Pole-sitter Chase Briscoe was out front until Byron passed him on lap 12. Buescher pulled ahead on lap 36 and stayed up front to win his first stage this season. Ryan Blaney and Chase Elliott took turns with the lead before a crash involving Alex Bowman brought out the red flag on lap 67. Byron took the lead again after a restart on lap 78 as part of his strong start and surged to the front again to win the second stage. Carson Hocevar took the lead on lap 152 and was informed soon thereafter that he didn't have enough fuel to finish, but that became moot because a flat tire forced him into the pits with 18 laps to go. Rough times for Bowman Bowman hit a wall with the front end of his No. 48 Chevrolet as part of a multi-car crash in his latest setback. 'That hurt a lot,' he said after passing a medical evaluation. Bowman, who drives for Hendrick Motorsports, came to Michigan 12th in points and will leave lower in the standings. He has finished 27th or worse in seven of his last nine starts and didn't finish for a third time during the tough stretch. Reddick rallies Defending race champion Tyler Reddick qualified 12th, but started last in the 36-car field because of unapproved adjustments and rallied to finish 13th. Up next NASCAR shifts to Mexico City for its first points-paying international race in modern history on June 15. ___ AP auto racing:

Downtown Detroit buzzes with celebration and energy for Motor City Pride

June is Pride Month, a time to show support for the LGBTQ+ community. Michigan's largest Pride celebration took over the streets of downtown Detroit on Sunday afternoon. Tens of thousands of people lined up along Griswold Street for the Motor City Pride Parade. "This is my first one in probably a few years. But I used to come all the time," Erika Cruz, a Detroit native, said. "It's way bigger, way more inclusive. It seems like there's a lot more big companies that are, you know, helping and donating and everything. So that's really cool." Dozens of local companies, community organizations and marching bands made the walk from Campus Martius to Hart Plaza, throwing souvenirs and candy from vibrant, colorful vehicles and floats. Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer surprised spectators by making a beeline for the crowd. "Everybody's so happy. Everybody's always so nice anyway, so I'm glad everybody turned out and [is] actually having a good time," Tiffani Taylor, visiting from Savannah, Georgia, said. The vibe and atmosphere at Motor City Pride are what make this event one of the most attended celebrations of the summer. "It's just the love that you feel. You know, it's a nice environment, Sheresse Jackson, a Detroit resident, said. "Everybody loves everybody, you know. You leave with a smile, feeling better about yourself." This is more than just a parade. It's a show of harmony. "I've been crying half of the time through the parade, so I looked at my wife and I was like, I keep getting super emotional just seeing everybody super hyped up and all the love flowing," Cruz said. And of course, unwavering pride.

NASCAR star Alex Bowman suffers frightening crash during Michigan race: 'That hurt a lot'

NASCAR Cup Series star Alex Bowman took a hard hit on Sunday during the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway. The driver of No. 48 was driving behind Cole Custer and Daniel Suarez on Lap 67 when Custer got loose and hit both Suarez and Bowman. Suarez and Custer spun while Chase Briscoe got loose trying to move past the carnage in front of him. Austin Cindric was at the bottom of Custer and appeared to have avoided disaster. Bowman hit the wall head on hard and bounced back down the track. It took a brief moment, but Bowman was able to exit the vehicle under his own power. The red flag was waved and the race was briefly put on hold as emergency crews worked to clean up the wreck and make sure each driver involved got off the track. Bowman talked to Amazon Prime Video after he exited the infield care center. "Yeah, that hurt a lot. Probably top of the board on hits I've taken," he said. "Looks like the 41 got loose, or the 2 got into him or something. At that point, I was just along for the ride, I couldn't do anything. Just, 'Oh s---, this is about to hurt really bad.' "Hate that. Hate that for our team. It's been a really rough two months." The Hendrick Motorsports driver finished 36th last week in Nashville and will finish 36th at Michigan. He's finished outside the top 20 in four of the last five races. Follow Fox News Digital's sports coverage on X and subscribe to the Fox News Sports Huddle newsletter.
