
ROP installing smart surveillance cameras on major roads
The ROP recently launched smart traffic monitoring systems and is working on future projects that incorporate artificial intelligence to enhance traffic management.
These initiatives pave the way for integrating smart vehicles into Oman's transport network by monitoring global trends and assessing potential risks.
As part of this effort, the ROP is studying the experiences of other countries to develop a future regulatory framework tailored to Oman's environment.
The analysis covers key risks associated with emerging technologies, including the safety of autonomous vehicles and the question of legal responsibility in the event of accidents.
To strengthen the nation's smart safety infrastructure, the ROP is upgrading traffic signals to align with Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS), enhancing automated traffic monitoring with advanced technologies, and installing smart surveillance cameras on major roads.
Traffic safety is a significant community issue that touches the lives of the individuals of the society, notably with the increase of the number of vehicles and the expansion of the road networks in Oman, which requires gathering the official and community efforts for cementing the culture of commitment with the traffic rules and systems.
Royal Oman Police continues with its efforts for protection of lives and provision of a safe and secure traffic environment.
Brigadier Ali bin Saleem Al Falahi, Director General of Traffic at Royal Oman Police said that the traffic safety institutes in the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman play a vital role in boosting traffic culture for drivers and applicants for driving licences.
He said that the traffic safety institutes work on upgrading their programmes in accordance with the state-of-the-art technologies and the programmes and curricula related to the field of traffic safety.
He said that the traffic safety institutes train school bus drivers within the defensive driving programme in coordination with the Ministry of Education. The results of this programme are revised through following with the performance of drivers in transporting the students, soothing that reflects positively on improvement of the performance of drivers and the reduction of their traffic breaches.
He said that the traffic safety institutes in the governorates of the Sultanate of Oman offer specialised training programme including the syllabus on training on defensive driving, the syllabus of training driving vehicles' instructors, taxi drivers training programme and heavy vehicle drivers training syllabus among other programmes.
Regarding the role of the National Road Safety Committee, he said that the committee works on establishment of the strategies and the guidelines related to traffic safety and implementation of the same in cooperation with the government departments concerned.
The recommendations of the committee included the one on setting a national strategy for curbing traffic accidents and setting plans for media coverage for the purpose of dissemination of awareness on traffic culture among the members of the society.
He also pointed out to the cooperation existing between the ROP and the Ministry of Education which aimed to raise the students' traffic awareness and traffic culture.
He also pointed to the implementation of the Road Friends VIA experimental programme during the school year 2022 / 2023, which has later covered 33 schools in the various governorates of the Sultanate of Oman.
He said that the organisation of the Traffic Safety Competition comes within the belief of ROP on the effective role the government and individuals of the society play in traffic awareness and dissemination of traffic culture.

Zoho Launches Zia LLM, and Expands AI Suite with Agents and Studio Tools
Zoho Corp., a leading global technology company, announced the launch of Zia LLM —the company's proprietary large language model, a no-code agent builder, Zia Agent Studio, over 25 deployable Zia agents, and a Model Context Protocol (MCP) server in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region to open up Zoho's vast library of actions to third-party agents. 'Today's announcement emphasises Zoho's longstanding aim to build foundational technology focused on protection of customer data, breadth and depth of capabilities because of the business context, and value," said Premanand Velumani, Associate Director, Strategic Growth Zoho MEA. "Our LLM model is trained specifically for business use cases, keeping privacy and governance at its core, which has resulted in lowering the inference cost, passing on that value to the customers, while also ensuring that they are able to utilise AI productively and efficiently." Zia LLM: Custom-Built AI for the Enterprise Zoho has successfully launched its own large language model, Zia LLM, built completely in-house by leveraging NVIDIA's AI accelerated computing platform. Trained with Zoho product use cases in mind—ranging from structured data extraction, summarisation, RAG, and code generation—Zia LLM comprises three models with 1.3 billion, 2.6 billion and 7 billion parameters, each separately trained and optimised for contextual applicability that benchmark competitively against comparable open source models in the market. The three models allow Zoho to always optimise the right model for the right user context, striking the balance between power and resource management. This focus on right-sizing the model is an ongoing development strategy for Zoho. In the short term, Zoho will scale Zia LLM's model sizes, starting with the first set of parameter increases by the end of 2025. While Zoho supports many LLM integrations for users, including ChatGPT, Llama, and DeepSeek, Zia LLM continues Zoho's commitment to data privacy by allowing customers to keep their data on Zoho servers, leveraging the latest AI capabilities without sending their data to AI cloud providers. The model is currently testing for internal use cases across Zoho's broad app portfolio, and will be available for customer use in coming months. Zoho also announced two proprietary Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) models for speech-to-text conversion for English and Hindi. Optimised to perform on a low computer load without compromising on accuracy, the models benchmark up to 75% better than comparable models across standard tests. Zoho will expand language support for ASR models to enable more inclusive AI adoption across diverse regions. It will also introduce a reasoning language model (RLM). Prebuilt Agents, Agent Studio and Marketplace Designed for Real-World Impact Zoho has developed a roster of AI agents contextually baked right into its products to enable immediate adoption of agentic technology. These agents can be used across various business activities, handling relevant actions based on the role of the user. These include Customer Service Agent for Zoho Desk that can process incoming customer requests, understand the context, and either answer directly or triage them to a human rep, providing an efficient first line of assistance. Ask Zia, Zoho's platform-wide conversational AI assistant, is bolstered with additional BI skills, tailored to data engineers, analysts, and data scientists, while supporting all users within an organisation. It can build end-to-end data pipelines for engineers, analyse data, create reports and dashboards in an interactive conversation mode for analysts, or help jump start building ML models for data scientists. First announced earlier in 2025, Zoho has further simplified the Zia Agent Studio experience to be fully prompt-based (with the option to use low-code) and includes ready-made access to over 700 actions across Zoho's products. Agents built by users can be deployed autonomously, triggered by button click, with rule-based automation, or even summoned within customer conversations. At the time of deployment, an agent can be provisioned as a digital employee, maintaining the user access permission structure defined within the organisation. Admins can perform behavioural audits as well as performance and impact analyses on digital employees, ensuring that every agent is working as effectively as possible and within clear guardrails. Several pre-built agents are now available for users, such as Candidate Screener, which identifies and ranks the most suitable candidates for a specific job opening based on role requirements, skills, experience, and other key attributes; Deal Analyser, which can analyse deals and provide insights such as win probability, next best action, and follow-up suggestions, and Revenue Growth Specialist, which suggests opportunities for upsell and cross-sell for existing customers. These agents are available in Agent Marketplace from where customers can easily deploy them. Ecosystem partners, ISVs, and individual developers will be able to create agents and host them on the Zia Agents Marketplace in coming months. The company plans to add more skills to Ask Zia, allowing it to act as an assistant to Finance teams, Customer Support teams to start with. Support for the Agent2Agent (A2A) protocol will be implemented, allowing Zia Agents to interact and collaborate with each other, as well as collaborate with agents on other platforms. Interoperability and Governance Zoho's adoption of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) allows clients to securely access and interact with workflows and actions across over 15 Zoho applications. Agricultural innovations contribute to enhancing productivity, promoting environmental sustainability in Oman
Muscat: The agricultural sector in the Sultanate of Oman is undergoing a notable transformation toward the use of innovation and technology to enhance food security and environmental sustainability, in line with "Oman Vision 2040." Innovations in agricultural technology, artificial intelligence, and biotechnology are among the most prominent tools that can contribute to improving agricultural productivity, reducing waste, and promoting environmental sustainability. The development of smart resource management systems and the application of modern farming models, such as vertical farming and precision agriculture, open new horizons for ensuring sustainable and safe food availability. Investing in innovative solutions is not a luxury but a strategic necessity to secure a food-safe future for coming generations. Innovation transforms challenges into opportunities, bringing about a qualitative shift in how food is produced, distributed, and consumed. Amid growing global challenges—from climate change and dwindling natural resources to rapid population growth—food security has become a central issue affecting the lives of millions. Traditional methods of food production and distribution are no longer sufficient to keep pace with these challenges, necessitating the adoption of innovative solutions capable of radically transforming the global food system. In this context, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Water Resources plays a role in supporting agricultural innovations to enhance food security in Oman. This is achieved through several programmes, including agricultural extension on modern farming techniques and sustainability, smart and organic farming. The ministry is implementing an integrated agriculture project that provides technical and financial support to small projects with innovative ideas. Additionally, funding and financial support initiatives are offered through the Agricultural and Fisheries Development Fund, along with awareness programs on agricultural marketing via digital platforms and agricultural exhibitions. The ministry stated that it is working on agricultural development and research projects in collaboration with universities and research centers, while also encouraging the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) in farms. Represented by agricultural research centers, the ministry clarified that several plans and programs are being implemented to promote innovation in various fields, such as crop improvement, modern irrigation techniques, smart farming, and seedling enhancement through tissue culture. It also collaborates with international organizations, such as the Arab Organisation for Agricultural Development (AOAD) and the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), to adopt modern irrigation methods for water conservation, smart irrigation based on plant needs, and the reuse of treated water in agriculture. The ministry emphasized the importance of smart farming and digitalisation in disease prediction and production improvement using artificial intelligence. It highlighted the role of biotechnology and nanotechnology research in enhancing crop resistance to diseases and climate conditions. The ministry pointed to legislation supporting agricultural innovation and startups based on advanced agricultural technology, including the Intellectual Property Protection Law (Patents), which encourages researchers, farmers, and innovators to register their innovations in agricultural technologies, biofertilizers, and modern irrigation systems. Agricultural startups are exempted from income tax for five to ten years, and customs duties are waived on the import of modern agricultural technologies, such as smart sensors and soilless farming (hydroponics). Additionally, legislation promotes investment in the agricultural sector and facilitates licensing procedures for projects relying on renewable energy and agricultural technologies. The ministry encourages farmers to adopt organic farming through certification and promotes the use of biological control techniques to reduce chemical usage. It also implements innovation support programs in partnership with the private sector, encouraging companies to establish experimental smart farms and funding water desalination projects using solar energy to promote sustainable irrigation. Regarding private sector collaboration, the ministry emphasised encouraging partnerships between research institutions and agricultural companies to develop innovative solutions that meet market needs and contribute to food security. Several investment opportunities are offered through the "Tatweer" platform, which requires projects to utilize modern technologies. The ministry has also launched the "Suggest Your Project" window on the platform to attract investors interested in establishing distinguished and innovative projects that meet specified criteria, including organic farming, research projects, and value-added agro-processing initiatives. In a follow-up by Oman News Agency (ONA) with several student innovators, a research study conducted by a team from Sultan Qaboos University highlighted the high efficacy of the Harmal plant (Peganum harmala) in combating agricultural fungi that cause crop diseases, underscoring its potential to support food security efforts and promote sustainable agriculture in Oman. The study, supervised by researchers Buthaina Harith Al Busaidi and Dhia Ibrahim Al Rashdi, revealed that plant extracts from Harmal effectively inhibit the growth of dangerous fungi, including Rhizoctonia solani, a major cause of root rot in crops, particularly vegetables and legumes. The research team confirmed that active compounds in Harmal, such as harmine and harmaline, possess antifungal and antibacterial properties, reducing the need for chemical pesticides and making Harmal an environmentally safe and effective option for plant disease control. The team noted that the research is a promising step toward utilising local plants to support national food security and provide natural, sustainable solutions for Omani farmers without negatively impacting the environment or food safety. It represents an advanced step in leveraging local medicinal plants to develop sustainable environmental solutions that support the green economy and enhance agricultural productivity without harming soil or human health. As part of the practical application of the research, the two researchers produced an effective solution derived from Harmal, which demonstrated high efficiency in practical experiments in suppressing pathogenic fungi. This opens new avenues for research and industrial collaboration in biological control and encourages the utilization of high-value local innovations to achieve long-term food and environmental security. Specialized research entities, in collaboration with Sultan Qaboos University, are exploring the possibility of developing natural agricultural products derived from Harmal to support national strategies in agriculture and environmental sustainability. Meanwhile, innovator Hawra Rashid Al Omrani from the University of A'Sharqiyah stated that AZDARA is an innovative company specializing in organic pesticides and fertilizers. It offers a product combining organic pesticide and fertilizer in a biodegradable smart soil pack made entirely of natural materials. After the organic pesticide is depleted, the pack is planted beneath the plant, gradually decomposing to nourish the soil—providing a circular and effective environmental solution for sustainable farming. She added that the company is producing a product derived from organic animal shampoo, which serves as a safe and effective pesticide for harmful insects while improving animal skin health without environmental harm. AZDARA's products contribute to food security by reducing reliance on harmful chemicals that pollute soil and water. They also improve crop quality through natural soil nourishment and support the sustainability of local agricultural production with easy-to-use organic solutions, in addition to promoting the health of animals, which are part of the food chain. She noted that the company's vision aligns with Oman Vision 2040 in the priority areas of food and water security—by providing sustainable agricultural solutions that enhance food quality and conserve resources—and environmental sustainability—through products that promote green farming practices and reduce pollution. It also aligns with economic development by stimulating local innovation and providing exportable organic products, as well as health and quality of life by offering natural solutions that reduce exposure to chemicals in food or the environment. Innovator Omar Fathil Al Dar'ee from the University of Technology and Applied Sciences in Ibri introduced the Smart Agriculture Cultivator (SAG 1), equipped with sensors that analyze soil while in motion, measuring moisture, pH levels, temperature, and nutrients. He explained that the device issues alerts on a small screen or via an app if problems such as salinity or nutrient deficiencies are detected. It features mechanical tillage blades connected to a smart conveyor belt system that removes stones, weeds, or plastic from the soil, depositing them in a rear container. The system operates automatically when impurities are detected and includes an app that displays real-time soil analysis results and audio/visual alerts for soil issues.
