Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Badal camps in city for charging up party workers for the Ludhiana West bypoll.

Time of India2 days ago

Ludhiana: The
Shiromani Akali Dal
(SAD) has turned the Ludhiana West assembly byelection into a make-or-break campaign, with party chief Sukhbir Singh Badal leading the charge from the frontlines.
In an unprecedented move, Badal has been camping in the city for days and is expected to remain for the entire duration of the campaign — a level of personal involvement that party insiders say they haven't seen in any local bypoll before.
Internally, they view this byelection as a precursor to the 2027 Punjab assembly polls, with senior leadership treating it as both a symbolic and strategic battleground. Party sources claim that Badal has been conducting intensive indoor meetings with booth-level workers and senior members, energising the grassroots and sharpening the party's focus ward by ward.
Personal Push, Party Strategy
The SAD has fielded first-time candidate Parupkar Singh Ghuman, a Sikh face, in a constituency where an estimated 45,000 Sikh voters reside. In contrast, rival parties have chosen Hindu candidates, which SAD believes gives it an opening to consolidate a core vote bank. "We are charging up our cadre booth-wise and aiming to increase vote share in every ward," a senior party leader said.

"This bypoll is not just about a seat — it's about momentum, visibility, and organisational strength going into 2027.
"
Party workers and bigwigs from outside the constituency have also been drafted into the effort. "I've been assigned two wards and given 10 days to cover those. We've begun a door-to-door campaign," said a member from the north constituency. "Even if leaders are coming out just because of
Sukhbir Badal
's presence, it matters — the party is now visible and active on the ground."
'Nothing to Lose, All to Gain'
An Akali leader who asked not to be named said Badal's intense involvement was reminiscent of his commitment to his home turf of Bathinda. "We haven't seen him this engaged elsewhere. It's pushing everyone to step up. We may have little to lose in this bypoll, but there's a lot to gain in terms of morale and groundwork for the next big election." The campaign strategy includes booth-level mobilisation and simultaneous outreach by both party leaders and the candidate himself.
While senior members lead coordination efforts, Ghuman is covering ground independently to connect with as many voters as possible.
Sukhbir: It's About Pb's Future
Speaking to TOI, Sukhbir Singh Badal underscored the wider stakes. "This is a very important election — not just for Ludhiana West, but for the entire state," he said. "The voters here will begin the chapter of defeat for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). As party president, it's my duty to support our candidate and energise the cadre. I'm holding meetings daily, and I'm encouraged to see how committed our workers are to securing victory.
"
With morale rising and the SAD's top brass embedded on the ground, the bypoll has evolved into more than a mid-term test — it has become the launchpad for the party's return bid in Punjab politics.

Jammu & Kashmir will be given status of state by PM Modi: Omar Abdullah in Katra

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Friday reiterated the demand for restoring statehood to the Union territory, expressing confidence that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the one to accomplish that. CM Abdullah was in Katra to attend the program of the flagging off of Vande Bharat trains by PM Modi from Katra railway station . During the program, apart from the Prime Minister, Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha , and Union Minister Jitender Singh were also present. "It has been my luck and fortune that whenever there have been big programs for railways, I have been part of it. The first time Anantnag rail station was inaugurated, when the Banihal rail tunnel was opened. Looking back at the last program of my first term in 2014 happened here too... You had also become the Prime Minister for the first time, just after elections, you came here and inaugurated the Katra railway station, and you won the elections a total of 3 times to remain PM," J-K CM said during the program. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Villas For Sale in Dubai Might Surprise You Villas In Dubai | Search Ads Get Quote Undo Hoping for "things to get back to normal" in the union territories, CM Abdullah added, "The same four people were present here in 2014 when the Katra Railway Station was inaugurated, Manoj Sinha, who was then MoS (Minister of State) for railways, got promoted as post of LG, and I got from CM of a state to CM of a UT. But things will get back to normal before we know it, and J&K will be given the status of a state by PM Narendra Modi." Meanwhile, Lt Governor Manoj Sinha highlighted how the slogan of connecting the country to 'Kashmir to Kanyakumari' is becoming a reality with the flagging off of the Katra-Srinagar Vande Bharat Train. Live Events "By uniting the two corners of the country, he has also made the dreams of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel and Dr Syama Prasad Mookherjee come true... He has also connected the beating hearts of millions of Indians in the cities connected by this railway line... The railway bridge inaugurated today is not just cement and iron but a medium to connect the aspirations of Jammu and Kashmir," Governor Sinha said. Earlier today, PM Modi flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station, directly connecting Jammu division with Kashmir. Before flagging off the trains, Prime Minister Modi interacted with school children onboard and also spoke with railway staff members present on the train. The new Vande Bharat Express service will reduce the travel time between Katra and Srinagar from the current 6-7 hours by road to just about 3 hours. The trains aim to provide a fast, comfortable, and reliable travel option for residents, tourists, and pilgrims. The train will run through the Anji Khad Bridge, which is India's first cable-stayed railway bridge, and the Chenab Bridge , which is the highest railway bridge in the world. The bridges were also inaugurated by the Prime Minister. In a remarkable gesture, Prime Minister Modi waved the Tiranga, the Indian national flag and carried it forward on the deck of the bridge on the Chenab River. These bridges are part of the ambitious Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Link (USBRL) project in Jammu and Kashmir. The project had earlier faced numerous engineering and logistical challenges due to the region's difficult terrain and seismic sensitivity. Yet, after years of meticulous work, the bridge now stands as a testament to India's technological prowess and commitment to inclusive development. The Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL) project is 272 km long USBRL project, constructed worth around Rs 43,780 crore, includes 36 tunnels (spanning 119 km) and 943 bridges. The project establishes all-weather, seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country, aiming to transform regional mobility and drive socio-economic integration.

‘Pakistan attacked both humanity and Kashmiriyat there': PM Modi in J&K after inaugurating Chenab, Anji bridges; top quotes

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday inaugurated several infrastructure projects in Jammu and Kashmir worth approximately Rs 44,000 crore. The key projects included the Anji bridge and the Chenab bridge. PM Modi also flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains between Katra and Srinagar, enhancing rail connectivity to the Kashmir Valley. He first inaugurated the Chenab bridge, the world's highest railway arch bridge, which stands 359 metres above the riverbed in Reasi district. Waving the national flag, the Prime Minister called the bridge a symbol of engineering achievement. Jammu and Kashmir Lt Governor Manoj Sinha, chief minister Omar Abdullah, and railway minister Ashwini Vaishnaw were present. Pm Modi also inaugurated the Anji bridge, India's first cable-stayed rail bridge. Both structures are part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Link (USBRL), which connects Kashmir to the rest of India by rail for the first time. Later, PM Modi also flagged off two Vande Bharat Express trains from Katra Railway Station to Srinagar. 'These trains have been specially designed to operate in the cold climatic conditions of the Kashmir Valley,' officials said. The route covers both the Anji and Chenab bridges. The Chenab Railway Bridge, part of the Katra-Sangaldan section, is a 1,315-metre-long steel arch built to withstand seismic activity and strong winds. The USBRL project faced several technical challenges due to the region's terrain and weather conditions. The completed USBRL project spans 272 km and was built at a cost of around Rs 43,780 crore. It includes 36 tunnels totalling 119 km and 943 bridges, enabling all-weather rail connectivity between Kashmir and the rest of the country. 'The project establishes seamless rail connectivity between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of the country, aiming to transform regional mobility and improve socio-economic integration,' officials said. Here are top quotes from PM Modi's speech: 'Our neighbouring country opposes peace, tourism, and even the livelihood of the poor. What happened in Pahalgam on April 22 is a clear example. Pakistan attacked both humanity and Kashmiriyat there.' 'Their intent was to stop Kashmir's income and create riots in India. The growing tourism, which supports the poor families of J&K, was targeted by Pakistan.'
