Playing the affluent patriarch of the Ratliff family who — while vacationing in Thailand, grapples with legal troubles, the potential collapse of his financial empire, drug abuse and possible suicide — forced Jason Isaacs to go to an emotionally intense place. 'I had to feel like I would rather die than face the shame of being poor and that I would kill the people I love to save them from the same fall from grace, which is a very extreme position," he says. He says he always tries to lose himself in whichever character he's playing — whether it's Lucius Malfoy in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets or Col. William Tavington in The Patriot. That desire to fully inhabit a character has extended into his personal life as well. 'I felt like my life was not grounded. I could be whoever people needed me to be in different groups, which is why I became an actor,' he says. 'I want to live these vicarious, extreme experiences as a way of trying to find out who I'm meant to be.' Yet, that search for belonging changed when he became a father in real life. 'When we had our first daughter, I thought now there's somewhere I belong forever. I'm a dad. I'm this person's dad. I belonged,' he says. That sense of emotional grounding has followed him into his work playing a father of three on The White Lotus. Isaacs formed a deep connection with the actors who play his on-screen children: Patrick Schwarzenegger, Sam Nivola and Sarah Catherine Hook. 'I bonded closely in ways that you hope will last for many, many years. I really adore them,' he says. Their connection extended beyond the set, and one night out highlighted just how popular the show had become. 'On St. Patrick's Day, Sam, Patrick, Sarah Catherine and I all went out together. We thought we could go to a bar,' Isaacs recalls. He soon found out the Ratliff family could not go incognito while the show was airing on HBO. 'People were grabbing us and asking for selfies everywhere. You realize you can't have a normal conversation because everybody's listening,' he says. But despite any chaos, Isaacs remains grateful for the love the show received. 'It was fantastic. Not because of what it did for me or us, but because it seemed to be providing so much joy for people. It was so nice to be part of something that was creating joy in a pretty dark world. It felt like a whole great big river of joy.' At the heart of that joyful experience is series creator Mike White, whom Isaacs speaks of with great admiration. 'He's not only creating real rich, surprisingly three-dimensional people, he's putting them in a narrative, which is gripping as well. He's a great storyteller as well as a great observer of the humankind.' ‘Severance' star John Turturro reflects on how his ‘The Batman' villain spawned ‘The Penguin'
'You a big man now, Oz, eh? Because to me, you were always just a gimp in an empty suit.' Such are the final words of Carmine Falcone in The Batman. The slaying of the mob boss, memorably played by John Turturro, creates a power vacuum in Gotham City that various players, from former underling Oz 'The Penguin' Cobb to daughter Sofia Falcone/Gigante, scramble to fill — events that form the backbone of the Emmy-nominated HBO limited series The Penguin. 'I had a wonderful time doing that film. I really did,' says Turturro, who had no idea during production that director Matt Reeves would eventually do a television spin-off triggered by Falcone's demise. The actor had high praise for The Penguin stars Colin Farrell, reprising his role from The Batman, and Cristin Milioti, who plays Sofia. 'I think the leads on the show are both great," he says. "He's great. She's great. So I watched them just a little bit.' But while he's a fan of The Penguin performers, Turturro says he was ready to move on from the Gotham underworld without seeing how the struggle ultimately panned out. (Spoiler alert: Oz gets the last laugh, and Sofia gets locked up in Arkham Asylum, where she receives a note from another alum of The Batman, half-sister Selina "Catwoman" Kyle, played in the movie by Zoë Kravitz.) 'I feel like I had done my thing with [The Batman],' he says, 'and sometimes it's better for me to leave things to the imagination.' The Emmys could prove to be a reunion of sorts for the extended Falcone family (or the burgeoning Turturro Cinematic Universe), with Turturro's Best Drama Supporting Actor bid among the 27 nominations for Severance, Milioti and Farrell's nominations for lead actress and actor in a limited series among the 24 nods for The Penguin, and Kravitz up for her guest turn on The Studio. The TV Academy might want to have Batman on call, just to be safe. A24's ‘Friendship' Sets HBO Max Premiere Date
A24's dark comedy Friendship, starring Tim Robinson and Paul Rudd, is slated to begin streaming exclusively on HBO Max in the U.S. on Friday, September 5, the service announced on Wednesday. The film will make its linear debut on HBO on Saturday, September 6 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
