Schmidt's switch: Wallabies set to unleash stand-in 10

The Wallabies have had a rare eve-of-Test change of heart, deciding to bring in international novice Tane Edmed as bench cover for veteran James O'Connor in their Rugby Championship opener against South Africa in Johannesburg. Eyebrows had been raised on Thursday when coach Joe Schmidt announced a team with no specialist flyhalf back-up for his veteran playmaker O'Connor, who's been recalled for his first Test in three years. Schmidt had suggested scumhalf Nic White or outside back Andrew Kellaway were equipped as fill-in No.10s even though neither had played there in their pro careers, with his team selection appearing very risky at the Ellis Park home of the world champions. 🔁 Team update from Johannesburg.🆚 Springboks🗓️ Sunday August 17 | 1:10am AEST🏟️ Emirates Airline Park, Johannesburg📺 @stansportau#Wallabies — Wallabies (@wallabies) August 15, 2025 But after an overnight rethink, Schmidt named one-cap Edmed on Friday as cover for 35-year-old O'Connor, putting him on the bench in place of the originally selected replacement loose forward Nick Champion de Crespigny. If the Wallabies stick by their original plan to have O'Connor playing just the first half, that would mean Edmed coming on for the second 40, having previously played only three minutes as a replacement in the green-and-gold before he got injured against Ireland in Dublin late last year. Schmidt's late volte face, announced by the Wallabies on social media, was highly unusual after his team had already been named, even though the New Zealander had signalled on Thursday he was pondering potential late switches after Ben Donaldson, his original replacement 10, got injured late in training. Now, what had originally been listed as a surprise 6-2 split between forwards and backs on the bench has again reverted to a 5-3. The No.10 berth has become a headache for Schmidt. His first-choice Noah Lolesio is out with neck trouble and Tom Lynagh suffered a concussion in their third-Test win over the British & Irish Lions in Sydney a fortnight ago, before Donaldson's latest setback. "Dono went down in last-minute training on Thursday afternoon, which wasn't ideal after the team has been announced internally," explained captain Harry Wilson at a press conference on Friday. "We named Crep (Champion de Crespigny) but the coach has had a few meetings overnight and again this morning to work out what would be the best replacement and decided to put in Tane, which he's really excited about. "We've got a lot of confidence in him, he's been around the group now for a little while and what he's put in on the training park has been first class," Wilson added. Wilson also has great faith in O'Connor, who's been important as a 'finisher' for the New Zealand Super Rugby outfit, the Crusaders. "After three years, I know he's really excited to be out there. He's 35 years old. He's got plenty of experience. He's got plenty of confidence, and we can't wait to see him go out there and do his job," said Wilson.

Former Uzalo actor Glen Gabela pleads for work opportunities amidst financial struggles

We see them on television and assume that they have everything going for them. However, the reality in South Africa is that several veteran actors and actresses are coming forward to share their financial struggles and seeking support. Glen Gabela is yet another great actor who is pleading for work opportunities. His outcry has sparked a broader conversation about the film industry. People are debating what's behind these struggles: poor personal financial decisions, or systemic industry problems like underpaying stars. Read more | 'Muvhango wasn't just a show, it was us' - Actress Masutang reflects as soapie ends In a viral video posted all over social media, the legendary Gabela, known for his roles in the 'Shaka Zulu' series and the popular SABC 1 soapie 'Uzalo,' where he played Pastor Mdletshe, is seen tearfully pleading for help, showcasing his difficult living conditions, including a nearly empty fridge with only bottles of water. He reveals in the video that he's struggling to make ends meet and to survive after years of unemployment. 'I just want a decent life, like everyone else. That's why I'm reaching out. I want to engage with people and help grow the film industry, so upcoming performers don't end up like us. I want their lives to be better, and I don't want them to face the same struggles we do,' he said. He added that 'All veteran actors, when they pass, you hear about how they struggled. Almost all of us, by the time we reach this age, we become beggars. It's painful for me, because begging is very difficult for me; I just need help to live a decent life. I don't need to be rich.' Glen Gabela (uMfundisi uMdletshe's) living situation broke my heart. Glen was hospitalised after suffering from a heart... Posted by Thulile Gambushe on Wednesday, August 13, 2025 In March, Glen was a guest on the 'Voice with Palesa' podcast hosted by Palesa Madisakwane, and he spoke about his job loss from 'Uzalo,' his financial struggles, and his strained relationship with his daughter. On the podcast, Glen revealed that for Shaka Zulu, he only got paid R7000 instead of the R40 000 he was promised. He mentioned that losing his job on Uzalo due to a breach of contract led to a series of devastating events, including his bank accounts being frozen, his car being repossessed, his apartment being locked, and his daughter becoming distant. He also claimed that the reason behind his contract termination was that the writers had run out of ideas for the character, despite the initial agreement being that Pastor Mdletshe would be one of the permanent cast members. 'I don't care even if they'd call me back at Uzalo, I will never work with them again. It messed up my life. When they breached that contract, my life went all the way. My bank froze all my accounts, the car I had with a loan from the West Bank got repossessed, and my apartment was locked with everything I had. And the last time I saw my daughter was in 2018,' he said. Minister of Sports, Arts and Culture Gayton McKenzie has since promised to reach out to him after being tagged on X (formerly Twitter) asked to intervene. 'Thanks, will follow up and revert back today. This is extremely sad,' he re-tweeted the post. Thanks, will follow up and revert back today. This is extremely sad. — Gayton McKenzie (@GaytonMcK) August 14, 2025

Lainey Wilson previews 'Whirlwind' deluxe album as tour kicks off

Lainey Wilson is giving fans a taste of her newest music. In a video posted to social media this week, the singer treated followers to a porch-side performance of "Peace, Love, and Cowboys," a country-western anthem with hippie sensibilities. Clad in a large tan Stetson hat and '70s-inspired shades, Wilson strummed out several verses from the song, which is expected to be featured on the deluxe version of her "Whirlwind" album out later this month. "Westerns and whiskey, horses and hippies, we need more peace, love and cowboys / Long hair and Stetsons, barbed wire and blessings, we need more peace, love and cowboys," she crooned, drawing up imagery of a dusty, wild-west, but injecting a folk music sound. A post shared by Lainey Wilson (@laineywilson) Lainey Wilson inducted into the Grand Ole Opry by Garth Brooks, Trisha Yearwood "We need more peace, love and cowboys ✌🏼🤠 #WhirlwindDeluxe #PeaceLoveAndCowboys," she captioned the post, which was immediately flooded with fan comments hungry for the deluxe album to drop. The original album, Wilson's fifth, was released in August 2024. A 14-track ramble into honky-tonk sounds and boot stomping dance music, the "Whirlwind" deluxe album will drop Aug. 22 and feature three additional songs: "King Ranch, King George, King James" and "Yesterday, All Day, Everyday," along with "Peace, Love, and Cowboys." Wilson's tour to support the album kicked off Aug. 14 in Phoenix. Her set was opened by growing country acts Ernest and Kaitlin Butts. Other opening acts slated for the rest of the tour include Muscadine Bloodline, Maddox Batson, Drake Milligan, Lauren Watkins and Zach Meadows. Contributing: Ed Masley, Arizona Republic
