Adding a dramatic layer to this year's edition is the surf forecast, with wave heights predicted to reach 10 to 12 feet, on the competition dates. These powerful swells will demand precision, stamina, and strategy, elevating the thrill and the difficulty for competitors.
The cyclonic activity and unpredictable weather patterns over the Arabian Sea may prove to be an unpredictable competitor, and play a spoilsport for the event.
The heightened challenge will also have implications for national rankings, especially with the Asian Surf Championship 2025, a qualifier for the 2026 Asian Games, on the horizon.
Originally scheduled at Sasihithlu Beach, this year's competition is relocated to Tannirbhavi Eco Beach due to unfavourable weather conditions. The new venue promises comparable wave quality while ensuring better safety for surfers and spectators alike.
"With a strong field of athletes and a challenging forecast of 10–12 ft waves, we are in for an intense and exciting three days of competition. This event would not be possible without the unwavering support of New Mangalore Port Authority, Karnataka tourism, and Cycle Pure Agarbathis, who continue to champion the growth of surfing in India," said Rammohan Paranjape, vice president of Surfing Federation of India and director at Mantra Surf Club.

In the lead-up to the sixth edition of NMPA IOS, local competitions have been aiming to unearth regional surfing talent. These events build momentum ahead of the national championship and set the stage for a sustainable pipeline of talent.

UP leads in sports push, over 500 athletes get jobs: CM Yogi Adityanath
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday said the state has emerged as a national leader in offering government jobs to medal-winning athletes. He was addressing the concluding ceremony of the two-day state-level wrestling championship organised at the Gorakhnath Temple on the occasion of Nag Panchami. Adityanath said that over the past eight years, Uttar Pradesh has witnessed significant development in sports infrastructure at the grassroots level, including the construction of playgrounds in villages, mini-stadiums at the block level, and full-fledged stadiums in districts. "Simultaneously, the state has introduced attractive cash rewards and employment opportunities for athletes excelling at the national and international levels," he said. Highlighting the state's achievements, Adityanath said: "Over 500 medal-winning athletes who have brought laurels to India and Uttar Pradesh in events such as the Olympics, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, and World Championships have been given government jobs. "UP leads the country in this regard," he said in an official statement. He also lauded the contribution of Uttar Pradesh Police athletes in helping India secure a third-place finish in the Police World Championship. Drawing from India's ancient ethos, the chief minister emphasised the importance of physical well-being and said sports are one of the most effective means to ensure physical fitness, which should be integrated into daily life. When a young person pursues sports professionally, they not only uplift themselves but also bring pride to their family, society, and the nation, he said. Adityanath also acknowledged the long-standing tradition of organising wrestling bouts at the Gorakhnath Temple during Nag Panchami, calling it a centuries-old practice that has now become a major platform for young wrestlers from across the state. He also watched the final bouts of the championship and distributed prizes to winners and runners-up across three categories.

ACL surgery forces steeplechaser Sable to miss September World Championship
Asian Games gold medallist 3000m steeplechaser Avinash Sable has undergone ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) surgery after suffering the injury during the Monaco Diamond League earlier this month and the Indian will be ruled out of World Athletics Championships in September. The 30-year-old Sable, the reigning Asian champion and a gold medallist in the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023, went under the knife in a Mumbai hospital. The procedure was performed under the care of well-known surgeon Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala. An ACL surgery normally takes at least six months to heal, and it means that Sable will be ruled out of the Tokyo World Championships (September 13-21) and he will be able to come back to action only next year. "During the Monaco Diamond League, I suffered an ACL and meniscus injury to my right knee. I've completed my surgery under the expert care of Dr. Dinshaw Pardiwala and his team at Kokilaben Hospital, to whom I'm grateful beyond words," Sable wrote in a social media post on Tuesday. "It's a tough setback, but I'm determined to do the hard work and come back stronger. Thank you for all your messages of support. I'll be back faster and stronger," he posted along with a picture. National record holder Sable sustained the injury due to a nasty fall during the Monaco DL on July 11. The athlete ahead of him lost balance and went down during the water jump early in the race, causing Sable to stumble as well. He was seen clutching his lower thigh area just at the back of the knee as he left the race. Sable's formative coach Amrish Kumar had termed the injury not serious but later it turned out to be a major one. He has been battling a calf injury since the Hangzhou Asian Games in 2023. But having shaken off the injury that plagued him for over a year, Sable was hoping to make a mark in the World Championships for which he qualified during the Paris Olympics by breaching the direct entry standard of 8 minutes 15 seconds. Sable, whose national record stands at 8 minutes 09.91 seconds, finished 13th in the Xiamen DL on April 16, and was eighth in Keqiao -- also in China -- before a DNF in Monaco. Though the sports ministry had approved Sable's training in the USA to prepare for the World Championships, the surgery has ruled him out of the showpiece in Tokyo. Asian champion and national record holder 100m hurdler Jyothi Yarraji had also undergone ACL surgery earlier this month after suffering an injury during a training session.

Macau Open: Satwik-Chirag cruise into second round
New Delhi: Star Indian shuttlers Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty made a commanding start to their campaign in the Macau Open Super 300 with a straight-game victory over Malaysia's Low Hang Yee and Ng Eng Cheong in the men's doubles first round in Macau on Tuesday. Freshly reinstated in the top 10 of the BWF world rankings, the Asian Games gold medallists produced a clinical performance to outclass the Malaysian pair 21-13, 21-15 in just 36 minutes. The Indian duo started strong, racing to a 6-1 lead. Though the Malaysians clawed back to within one point at 10-9, Satwik and Chirag surged ahead to take the opening game with ease. The second game was more competitive, with the Malaysians staying close until 13-14, but the Indians then pulled away with a four-point burst to seal the match. In women's singles, rising stars Anmol Kharb and Tasnim Mir advanced to the main draw after impressive wins in their respective qualification matches.
