MISSING Scottish tourist Greg Monks was recently found dead in Portugal after being missing for a week following stag do celebrations.
After going missing on Wednesday, 28 May, the Scot's body was found in a ravine after a week of extensive searching in the Algarve region.

Who was Greg Monks?
Greg Monks was a 28-year-old man from Glasgow.
Greg worked as a mechanic for Doncaster-based Cementation Skanska.
He travelled to Portugal with friends for a five-day stag do in Albufeira, a coastal city in the Algarve, the southernmost point of the country.
Greg and his friends were staying at the Novochoro Apartments complex, an hour's walk away from the clubs and bars of Cerro de Aguia.

Greg told his friends that he was heading back to their accommodation after a night of drinking.
Greg was last seen in the early hours of Wednesday, May 28, near the Cerro de Aguia area of the town.
An initial report was made to police at 8pm on May 28 by another man accompanying him.

His parents and girlfriend flew out to assist in the search. After an agonising wait, his body was found a week later.
Greg's body was discovered in a remote area an hour away from the popular Albufeira strip, which is known for its rocky terrain, cliffs and ravines.

Portuguese police have released an official statement: 'PJ police (Policia Judiciaria), through the Southern Directorate and with the collaboration of the Albufeira GNR police force, today located the body of a man who had been missing since May 28 in the Cerro de Aguia area of Albufeira.

'The disappearance of the 38-year-old UK citizen was reported to the Albufeira GNR at 8pm on the 28th by another man who was accompanying him on holiday in the area.
'After carrying out various enquiries and establishing the presumed route taken in the early hours of that day since the last sighting, the body was located on steep wasteland.'
No cause of death has been provided.
The body has been recovered and will be taken for an autopsy before being released, Policia Judiciaria confirmed.

More info A Roscommon resident has been released by authorities in Iraq – after being locked up for more than four years, it has emerged. Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Harris tonight revealed that Robert Pether – who is an Australian citizen but had been living in Elphin with his Irish family – was released on bail earlier today. Mr Harris, who has been working to secure the engineer's release for several months, said his Iraqi counterpart Fuad Hussein contacted him to tell him of the development. Construction engineer Mr Pether, 49, who is married to Desree Pether, 53, from Roscommon, has been locked up since April 2021. The father-of-three was jailed over four years ago in a €20 million contract row between his Dubai-based employer and the Central Bank of Iraq. His distraught family in Ireland revealed Mr Pether, who previously had melanoma skin cancer, has a prostate that is "three times (the) normal size" and that he also has gallstones. Mr Pether and an Egyptian colleague had been employed by a Dubai-based construction company, CME Consulting, to build a new Central Bank in Baghdad, when the contract row erupted. They are accused of stealing money from the project, which they both deny. The United Nations has slammed his jailing as "arbitrary detention." He was due to be released last January but Iraq issued new charges against them and he was facing a further 15 years in custody – until Mr Harris intervened earlier this year. He was a free man tonight - although he must remain in Iraq for the meantime. But the Tánaiste welcomed the decision to free him. He said: "This evening, I have been informed of the release on bail of Robert Pether, whose imprisonment in Iraq has been a case of great concern. "This is very welcome news in what has been a long and distressing saga for Robert's wife, three children and his wider family and friends. "Foreign Minister Hussein of Iraq, whom I spoke to last month to urge Robert's release, called me this evening with the news. I was informed that Robert has been released on bail and for the moment he remains in Iraq, but I welcomed this as a first step to his being allowed to return to his family in Roscommon." The Tánaiste also said he had been in contact with Mrs Pether over the release – and said he was grateful to Irish diplomats who had worked on the case. He said: "I also spoke this evening with Robert's wife, Desree Pether, about this positive development. A British man has been thrust into the spotlight with a shocking new theory about Madeleine McCann's vanishing, after he was allegedly overheard uttering five spine-chilling words. Reports today claim that German prosecutors have turned down a probe into a couple suspected of accidentally hitting Madeleine during a drink-driving incident. The Portuguese paper Correio da Manhã reports that Portuguese officials pressed for action following a harrowing tip from a British woman who suspected her brother and his German partner might be concealing the truth about Madeleine's fate. She expressed to the police her concern that her brother might be hiding a dark secret. Portuguese detectives requested permission from German authorities to send in an undercover officer with a false identity to cosy up to the wife, who is thought to have been driving the car that supposedly hit Madeleine. However, it's reported that the Germans knocked back the request. The tabloid disclosed that the British sister of the man at the heart of this latest theory alerted UK police back in 2018. "German prosecutors were asked to authorise a covert police operation with someone posing as a friend of the woman's and trying to get her to confess, but the courts refused," the newspaper stated, reports the Mirror. "It was decided to continue solely with the investigation into suspect Christian Brueckner, rejecting other possibilities." The newspaper Correio da Manha has cast suspicion over a mystery couple, describing the British man and his wife as "alcoholics". The report places the wife in a café near the Ocean Club where she'd been "drinking" on the night Madeleine McCann vanished from the Algarve resort. Additionally, Correio da Manha cites another witness, said to be the couple's neighbour, who told police she overheard them arguing the following day, with the man shouting: "Why did you bring her?". Portuguese authorities allege their efforts were rebuffed by the German police when they suggested the woman could have driven home "drunk" with Madeleine after a possible accident. Sadly, the British man identified in the claims has since passed away, with no word on whether his German partner is still living. Correio da Manha's headline story stated today: "The German police refused to co-operate with Portugal's Policia Judiciaria in the investigation of a clue that pointed towards Madeleine McCann being run over." Furthermore, the paper details how in 2018, a British woman approached UK police suspecting her brother's involvement in young Madeleine's disappearance, mentioning he was an alcoholic who seemed tormented by a heavy secret post the child's disappearance. "When British police exchanged information with the PJ, a coincidence was discovered. On 4 May 2007 a woman told police she had heard her neighbours arguing. They were both alcoholics, he was English and she was German, and she heard the man shouting repeatedly: 'Why did you bring her?'. "The neighbour discovered afterwards it was the man whose sister had reported him to police and was married to the woman who had been drinking in a café next to the Ocean Club where little Madeleine was staying with her parents and twin siblings. "Another report the police had indicated that in an identical car to the one the woman was then using, around the time of Madeleine's disappearance, a female and little girl had been seen inside. The PJ concluded she could have run Madeleine over and panicked." The newspaper also claimed the mystery British man had always "refused to tell his sister if he had been involved in Madeleine's death" before she alerted the authorities. Portuguese police are yet to respond to the Correio da Manha newspaper report. German police yesterday wrapped up a three-day search on the ground near prime suspect Christian Brueckner's old cottage home close to Praia da Luz where Madeleine disappeared on 3 May, 2007.
