Rob Holland, famed aerobatic pilot, dies in crash before Virginia airshow

Independent25-04-2025

Rob Holland, a famed aerobatic pilot who wowed airshow crowds and championship judges with tight spirals, meticulous loops and inventive sequences in the sky, has died in a plane crash. He was 50.
Holland died Thursday while landing his custom-built, single-seat aircraft at Joint-Base Langley-Eustis in Hampton, Virginia, in preparation for an upcoming airshow at the military installation. The crash remains under investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board.
Holland's death was confirmed by his official Facebook page, Rob Holland Aerosports, and by Jim Bourke, president of the International Aerobatic Club, for which Holland served as vice president. Bourke said Holland was flying a non-aerobatic flight and was landing at the base.
Holland was probably the best-known airshow pilot and the winningest competitor in aerobatic contests, Bourke said. The airborne competitions could be compared to figure skating for the required grace, precision and discipline, but with punishing gravitational forces.
'I flew against him many times, and, like a lot of people, I couldn't beat him,' said Bourke, who was Holland's friend, rival and teammate on the U.S. Unlimited Aerobatic Team. 'They didn't have anyone who could beat him. He was just that good.'
Holland won 12 consecutive U.S. National Aerobatic Championships, which was a record, according to his website. He also racked up five world Freestyle Aerobatic Championships and a prestigious award for showmanship from the International Council of Airshows.
Holland was known for inventing new maneuvers that no one saw before, Bourke said. One of them was his famous 'frisbee' that rotated his 1,200-pound (540-kilogram) plane horizontally, while the 'inverted frisbee' pulled off the same maneuver upside down.
'A lot of people expect an airplane to fly like an arrow, it's moving very fast in one direction,' Bourke said. 'With Rob, the airplane would be pointed in some crazy direction. It wouldn't be pointed the way it's traveling. It would be flipping on an axis that would be unexpected.'
Videos from Holland's YouTube channel show his red-and-black MXS streaking through the sky with a stream of billowing white smoke. A video from Holland's cockpit presents a nausea-inducing blur of sky and farmland.
Holland was a big guy whose body could handle the gravitational forces of aerobatic flight more than most pilots, Bourke said. It allowed him to spend more time practicing.
'Rob would fly figures faster than we would because the g-forces weren't as much as a concern for him,' Bourke said. 'And he developed an airshow style of flying that no one else has. People have copied it, but it was his.'
Holland told the Press of Atlantic City in 2016 that he wasn't a stuntman, because a stunt is trying something for the first time without knowing the results.
'I know the results of everything that is in my show,' he told the New Jersey newspaper. 'It is very well practiced and analyzed for safety and consistency. Nothing will be added to my routine unless it has perfect results 100% of the time.'
John Cudahy, president of the International Council of Air Shows, said Holland would practice a maneuver 'hundreds and hundreds of times to make sure that it is not dangerous.'
'He started at a higher altitude and gradually brought it down as he perfected it,' Cudahy said. 'He always was looking for something to go wrong and figure out how to keep that from happening.'
Holland inspired hundreds of thousands of people, maybe even millions, at airshows over the decades, Cudahy said. And it was about aviation as much as it was hard work.
'Every weekend, Rob went out there and demonstrated what the end of the road for a pursuit of excellence looks like,' Cudahy said.
Information on survivors was not immediately available. Holland's website states that he's a New England native who got his pilot's license while still a teenager. He later graduated from Daniel Webster College in New Hampshire with degrees that included aviation.

Strictly's Dianne Buswell has four-word wedding message for Joe Sugg

Strictly Come Dancing pro Dianne Buswell, who has been in a relationship with Joe Sugg since they were partnered together in 2018, had a message for her boyfriend Strictly Come Dancing professional Dianne Buswell delivered a major wedding hint to partner Joe Sugg. The flame-haired dancer, 36, and her partner Joe, 33 and known for his YouTube fame, hit it off during their stint on the BBC favourite in 2018. The duo shimmied their way to the final while Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton clinched the coveted Glitterball Trophy. Dianne and Joe's romance swiftly developed off the dance floor, and they confirmed they were an item later that same year, eventually moving in together and snapping up their first property in February 2021. Since then, fans have been eagerly waiting for Joe to get down on one knee. On her Winning Isn't Everything podcast with fellow Strictly champ Chris McCausland, Dianne gave a lighthearted message to her other half. During a conversation about fingers on the podcast, Dianne gestured to her ring finger asking: "What's that one, your best friend finger?" which led Chris to quip: "It's the one Joe's done nothing with." To which Dianne replied: "Exactly, we need to remind Joe what that finger holds. That finger is feeling very lonely, it needs something to weigh it down with." Following the purchase of their swanky £3.5million London pad in 2021, Dianne said they were "playing their marriage by ear". Putting her career at the forefront, she said to the Mirror: "Joe and I don't really talk about that kind of thing. We're both so relaxed so we just play it by ear. We really enjoy each other's company so much and whatever happens, happens." Dianne has opened up about the duo's aspirations to eventually build a family. Last year, the Aussie-born Strictly star spoke about the couple's desire to have children "when it feels right". She candidly shared that, just like their wedding plans, they're not in any hurry to progress in their romantic tale. Joe Sugg, whose elder sister Zoe is a YouTuber, was 27 when he met Dianne. He has openly declared that Dianne is his first "proper girlfriend". In a heartfelt chat with The Sunday Times back in 2021, Joe revealed: "Dianne is my first girlfriend. Other than, like, my pen pal from when I was 10." He has also admitted to being somewhat cautious at first about posting photos with his significant other online. Explaining the reason, he said: "My audience was very protective over me. But they instantly accepted Dianne, because we were partnered on Strictly, so after the show finished and we got together, they already felt like they knew her well." Echoing the sentiment on Instagram, Joe and Dianne's fellow Strictly dancer Johannes Radebe left a cheeky comment saying: "If you don't marry him Di, I will.."

Cyberpunk 2077 Nintendo Switch 2 performance review

After spending a considerable amount of time testing Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo Switch 2, and comparing it to the experience on Steam Deck, the results will probably surprise you. Cyberpunk 2077 is out now on Nintendo Switch 2. So, how does it run, and how does it compare with other devices like the Steam Deck? Let's dive in. First, let's get technical. How you experience Cyberpunk 2077 on Nintendo Switch 2 depends on which mode you're playing it in, and also, how you're playing it. When the Switch 2 is docked, there are two different graphical modes available in CD Projekt Red' s title: Performance mode and Quality mode. Performance prioritises frame rate over resolution, while quality mode prioritises visuals over frame rate. ‌ In Performance mode when docked, Cyberpunk 2077 runs at 1080p and targets 40fps with the frame rate being uncapped. In Quality mode, when docked, it again runs at 1080p, but the frame is capped at 30fps, with the game targeting 30fps. I was super impressed by the console's performance generally in my Nintendo Switch 2 review, but what about Cyberpunk 2077 specifically? ‌ Introducing All Out Gaming, a dedicated gaming brand providing the best gaming news, reviews, previews, interviews and more! Docked performance test When looking at footage of both modes side by side, there's a negligible difference, so I prefer performance mode for that reason, as you get the smoother experience and slightly higher framerate. You really do have to start pixel peeping to the max in order to spot any real differences when you're actively playing the game. There's maybe a small difference in sharpness, shadows, and lighting here and there, but unless you're really, really looking, it's going to be pretty hard to spot. Where you can see a difference is when V looks in the mirror right at the start of a new game, if you've chosen the Nomad starting option. There's slightly more fuzziness in the performance mode, maybe due to the different type of DLSS being used, and you can see the added sharpness in quality mode. But that's about it; they're very, very similar. ‌ Docked performance test – Now let's compare the Switch 2 in performance mode against the Steam Deck, running at 1080p resolution when docked. We set the Steam Deck to the Steam Deck graphics preset and FSR 3 in Balanced mode. And personally, although they are pretty close, I prefer the Switch 2. I think the image looks less grainy, slightly sharper and probably slightly smoother too in terms of average frames, although it's hard to say definitively without an fps counter on Switch 2. Handheld performance test Let's talk about the handheld experience now. On Switch 2 in Quality mode, Cyberpunk 2077 runs at 1080p resolution, targeting 30fps, and it's also locked to 30fps. When in Performance mode during handheld sessions, the game runs at 720p resolution but with the frame rate limit unlocked, aiming for 40 frames per second. And it's here you can see a clear difference in image quality, which you would expect considering the resolution differences. ‌ The DLSS AI upscaling utilised is far more noticeable in Performance mode, in my opinion, with more artifacting and just generally a fuzzier image. But in terms of frame rate, both modes felt pretty consistent and smooth. So I'd say the 40 and 30 fps claims are about right in these modes. And personally, I prefer playing Quality mode when on handheld, just for the added sharpness. But Performance mode is also a good option for players who want smoother gameplay. I will also say that when travelling at super high speeds, I did get the game to chug and stutter a little bit, even when docked, so that's something to be wary of, as it's loading a lot of textures at once. I would also mention that the crowd density is low – about the same as the Steam Deck preset – and it's a lot, lot lower than you would get on Xbox Series X, PS5 or PC. Compared to those platforms, the game does feel significantly emptier. ‌ Handheld performance test Now let's compare how the handheld experience with the Switch 2 compares to the Steam Deck, with Valve 's device running at 1280 x 800, which is the screen's native resolution. And when looking at the side by sides, even with the Switch 2 running in performance mode at 720p, in my opinion, the game looks much better on Nintendo 's console and also has the frame rates to match too; maybe not in the highs, but definitely more consistent frame rates with the Switch 2. For me, there's just no comparison about which is a better experience: Nintendo's console looks and feels better. Overall, I think CD Projekt Red have done a great job optimising this AAA title to run on Nintendo's latest console. The idea that Cyberpunk 2077 could run on a Nintendo console at all, even just a few years ago, would have been ridiculous, so the fact that it's running at this level of performance is a superb achievement. Obviously, if you're running this game on a current-gen console or a more expensive gaming handheld, or even a PC, you're clearly going to get much, much better performance. But for those who want to experience third-party games on Switch 2 for the first time, you can now play games like Cyberpunk 2077 on this platform, and have a good experience, which is awesome!. And if this game can run on this console, the world really is Nintendo's oyster, as well as all of the major game developers out there. I mean, where's Call of Duty, Microsoft? We're waiting!
