Major car dealership with over 120 locations to close branch ‘imminently' after more than 50 years
A POPULAR car dealership with over 120 locations has announced it is closing a branch after 50 years.

Lookers is set to close its head office in Manchester

Rumours had been circulating that staff would be made redundant, but managing director James Brearley assured that this is not true.
Instead, around 12 members of staff will be relocated to another Lookers site, in Stoke-on-Trent.
Addressing the rumours, Mr Brearley told
"The Altrincham site will be closing imminently but that effects 12 staff all of whom will be moving to another of our site's in Stoke on Trent.

Lookers was taken over by Canadian company Global Auto Holdings in October 2023, in a deal worth £504 million.
Following the takeover, a number of redundancies were made by the new owners.
Lookers was founded in 1908 as a bicycle seller and eventually switched to cars.

By the 1960s, it was one of the leading chains, alongside Pendragon, Inchcape and Marshall.
The dealership was hit hard by the pandemic, and axed 1500 jobs in 2020.

This comes after another car dealership,

earlier this month.
The closure was confirmed after planners granted permission for a new retirement village to be built on the dealership's site last year.

TC Harrison confirmed last month that the dealership would close on May 16, 2025.
Happily, there will be no job losses following the closure, with all business activities and staff to relocate to the the firm's
Why are so many car dealerships closing down?

According to Business Rescue Expert there are multiple reasons why car dealerships are folding across the UK.
The first major factor is rising online car sales which are beating in-person sales at dealerships.
With an extensive range of comparison and second-hand sites to chose from, may car buyers don't even step foot into a dealership anymore.
Secondly, the actual cost to physically run the sites has soared.
Rent, wages and energy bills have all been increasing for roughly the past five years, putting many out of pocket.
Car manufacturing across the globe was also hit by a semiconductor chip shortage in 2022 which made it difficult to produce new motors.
The high demand with limited supply created a backlog, which although has eased, is still having an impact on the industry.
A third reason for recent closures is the shift to electric cars.
They are becoming more popular, given the Government initiative to be Net Zero in 2050.
The industry is also affected when companies merge or are bought by rivals.
This may lead to some independent names falling victim to the ongoing spate of closures.

The German online used car marketplace has made heavy losses since opening in the UK in 2019 when it looked to rival Auto Trader and Motors.
Heycar's majority shareholder, Volkswagen Financial Services (VWFS), have pulled the plug leaving more than 126 employees across the UK, Germany, and France at risk of losing their jobs.

A large proportion of Heycar's employees are based in the UK.
They are expected to close in the UK shortly after their closure in Germany, in mid-May.

A Volkswagen spokesperson told the Globe: 'We can confirm that Group 1 Volkswagen Wirral ceased trading at the end of March and is now closed.

'Our focus when any network changes take place remains on convenience and the highest levels of service.
'Customers have been contacted to advise them of alternative sales, service and parts facilities.'
Hundreds of jobs are at risk due to the restructuring.

Having a player who is a creative passer in their forward options will bring another dimension for Liverpool in their attack. While they have the likes of In the example below, Wirtz is in possession with a solid defensive block ahead of him. He sees the angle to bypass the entire opposition defence with a low driven through ball to release his striker in behind. 11 Wirtz hits the killer pass to put the striker clean through on goal Liverpool are obviously looking for ways to make themselves less predictable in the attack. Intelligence in the opposition half We touched on the fact that Wirtz is the kind of attacking player who is able to slow the game down when under pressure and in tight spaces. This is a mark of his game intelligence and the fact that he has the technical level to be able to trust himself and his touch when under pressure. He has an innate ability to be able to take the ball and make positive decisions with the ability to hurt the opposition defence. He can get on the ball and either drive forward into the heart of the penalty area or he can play on the half-turn and combine quickly or play the final pass to break through the opposition defensive line. In the example below, he gets on the ball in the No10 position and immediately drives forward into the heart of the opposition defensive block. 11 Wirtz makes a driving run into the Dortmund defence While this may not always lead to a shooting opportunity for himself it will pull defenders towards him and create space for teammates. He scans and checks his shoulder often in the final third and this means that he will find himself in space with time to receive the ball whether that is wide or in more central areas of the pitch. This will allow Liverpool to quickly progress the ball forward and into more dangerous areas of the pitch. This time we see Wirtz occupying intelligent spaces in the final third and between the lines. As he receives the ball he has no defenders in a position to immediately get touch-tight to him and he can take the ball and turn towards goal 11 Wirtz here has found space and can turn and run at the defence With Salah perhaps being best as a front facing threat who likes to get on the ball when facing the opposition goal, it is interesting that Liverpool are adding a player in Wirtz who is more creative with his positioning. Again, this signing will make planning for matches against Liverpool a very difficult experience for opposition coaches. Conclusion While the expected fee for Wirtz will be extremely high there is a sense that Liverpool will still be getting a bargain when they sign the 22-year-old German international. They will be signing a player who can extend the effective career of Salah straight away and when they do eventually move on from the Egyptian they will have their next attacking talisman in the building already.

Trump to increase steel tariffs from 25% to 50%
US president Donald Trump plans to increase tariffs on imported steel and aluminum to 50% from 25%, ratcheting up pressure on global steel producers and deepening his trade war. "We are going to be imposing a 25% increase. We're going to bring it from 25% to 50% - the tariffs on steel into the United States of America, which will even further secure the steel industry in the United States," he said at a rally in Pennsylvania. Mr Trump announced the higher tariffs just outside Pittsburgh, where he was talking up an agreement between Nippon Steel and US Steel. Mr Trump claimed the $14.9bn (€13.1bn) deal, like the tariff increase, will help keep jobs for steel workers in the US. He later posted on social media that the increased tariff would also apply to aluminum products and that it would take effect on Wednesday. Shares of steelmaker Cleveland-Cliffs surged 26% after the market close as investors bet the new levies will help its profits. The doubling of steel and aluminum levies intensifies Mr Trump's global trade war and came just hours after he accused China of violating an agreement with the US to mutually roll back tariffs and trade restrictions for critical minerals. Canada's Chamber of Commerce quickly denounced the tariff hike as "antithetical to North American economic security." "Unwinding the efficient, competitive and reliable cross-border supply chains like we have in steel and aluminum comes at a great cost to both countries," Candace Laing, president of the chamber, said in a statement. Australia's centre-left government also condemned the tariff increase as "unjustified and not the act of a friend." "They are an act of economic self-harm that will only hurt consumers and businesses who rely on free and fair trade," Trade Minister Don Farrell said in a statement.
