I was a stay-at-mom for a decade. We made all our choices based on my husband's career. Now I'm back to work and my husband is asking who will make dinner. Can I say ‘you'? Ask Lisi
Q
My boyfriend's sister is an absolute jerk to me whenever we're in the same room. I have no idea why she hates me so much. We were very good friends when we were kids, and then we lost touch when I moved away. We were just a bit too young to keep in touch through social media.
High school and university came and went, and we never crossed paths. I moved to another city, was out for drinks with some girlfriends, and there was my old friend's brother. We hadn't seen each other in years! We hugged hello asked what we were both doing there, but then the conversation continued. One thing led to another, and we're now together.
I didn't contact my friend right away because we hadn't spoken in over a decade. I assumed my boyfriend would tell his sister. But he didn't. She found out through an Instagram post he made with the two of us at a restaurant. She called him and started screaming at him.
I don't understand what the problem is. She wouldn't respond to any of my outreaches, and now that he and I are both visiting 'home,' she is so rude to me when we're in the same place at the same time.
What did I do, and what do I do?
Old friends, new enemies
A
Either you're not being honest with yourself about something that went down between you two OR she's upset about something, and you need to find out what that is. Does your boyfriend have a clue as to what's going on?
Invite your old friend out to lunch. Tell her you have no idea why she's so upset with you, and you'd love to make things right any way you can. It can only go one of two ways — she either explains herself, you apologize (if necessary) and move on, or she says she hates you and never wants to speak with you. No love lost because she's already in that camp and you haven't been friends in years.
If the latter, the unfortunate aspect is that you'll see her whenever you're home if you're still with your boyfriend. Sometimes people are just a certain way, and there's nothing we can do about it.
Q
I met my husband in university. He was a lacrosse player and lived and breathed for the sport. I was also an athlete, which is how we met: in the school's athletic physio's office. My husband studied business and sports. Right out of school, he got a job as the assistant coach for our school's team. His career has taken him — and us — all over the world, working for universities, coaching and recruiting players.
In the beginning, I geared my career around his, making his a priority in terms of location. After we married and had our first child, we agreed that too much movement wouldn't be easy. We had our second, moved again, had our third and moved for the last time. Now the kids are all in school full-time, the youngest now seven, and I am going back to work full-time.
My husband is questioning how the kids will get to and from after-school activities and who will make dinner. Isn't it time we start to share the parenting load more evenly?
My Turn!
A
Absolutely, yes! You were the stay-home parent for more than a decade, allowing him to rise in his career and shine. And he was obviously able to support you all. It'll take an adjustment, some growing pains, but yes, he should be able to pitch in more and allow you the time to focus on your career.
FEEDBACK
Regarding the Concerned Grandma (March 17):
Reader:
'I found the beginning of Concerned Grandma's letter to you noteworthy. She says that her stepson is 'selfish, uninterested in us, and never really connected with his half-brothers,' all signs that he too, may be on the autism spectrum.
'Perhaps some empathy toward him might be in order?'
Lisi:
You may be right in your assessment. I understood that the grandmother was more concerned with her grandchild's issues than the stepson's.
FEEDBACK
Regarding the retired guidance counsellor's perspective and reflection (March 19):
Reader:
'Read with interest your conversation with the retired guidance counsellor regarding children leaving the family home. Until she died, my mother prominently displayed on her fridge a fridge magnet that read: 'Home is where, when you have nowhere else to go, they have to take you in.'
'As long as we have a home, my wife and I are happy to proclaim the same for our children and grandchildren.'

Sabrina Carpenter's new album cover has sparked uproar. Here's what you need to know
Sabrina Carpenter has revealed the date her new album will be released and unveiled the cover art – and fans have had some very mixed reactions. The image for the 26-year-old's seventh studio album, Man's Best Friend, due out on August 29, depicts Carpenter on her knees in a mini dress and high heels, with her hair being held by an anonymised man in a suit. Carpenter delivered the update on the followup to last year's chart topping Short n' Sweet via Instagram on Thursday morning AEST, sparking an online debate over whether the image is ironic or misogynistic. Comments on Carpenter's post ran the gamut from disgust — 'I don't wanna see no man dragging you around by your hair mother, please get up' — to adulation — 'MOTHER FEEDING HER CHILDREN'. The cover represents a departure from the imagery of Carpenter's previous six studio albums, which featured the artist alone, often in subdued poses. However, the singer has increasingly played into an ultra-feminised persona that smacks of irony and an understanding of the way female artists are depicted in popular culture. Dr Emma Phillips, an assistant professor at the University of Canberra who wrote her PhD on the aesthetics of sexualisation, said that the largely negative response to the image was a response to 'an immense shift in our post-feminist times', in which women are increasingly taking ownership of old-school misogynistic imagery that traditionally objectified them. '[Women are told to] perform their feminity in a so called 'appropriate way', and appropriate is not being in charge of their sexuality, or revealing too much flesh, or being an active agent in their own sexual selves. Here we see Carpenter being an active agent in her sexual life, and immediately she's derided for that,' said Phillips. 'There's a deep irony or satire going on, and there's no question that Carpenter is engaging in that … we should engage with who she is, with the lyrics on the album, and some of her history, rather than just take a surface reading of things, which unfortunately, is what most people will do.' Manchild, the lead single from the upcoming album speaks to Carpenter's dominance over male companions, featuring lyrics like 'never heard of self-care, half your brain just ain't there', and 'I like my men all incompetent'. It fits neatly into earlier offerings like chart toppers Espresso, Taste, and Bed Chem, all of which proudly celebrate Carpenter's sexuality and power over men.

Seattle mayor urges peaceful protests, warns against fueling Trump narrative
The Brief Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell is urging peaceful protests in Seattle, saying violence is what Trump wants to "spin his false narrative" about the city. An anti-ICE rally is set to take place on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Cal Anderson Park. A national "NO KINGS" demonstration is planned for Saturday, President Trump's birthday. SEATTLE - Mayor Bruce Harrell is urging Seattle protesters to remain peaceful, warning that violence and property damage would reinforce a narrative President Donald Trump could use to misrepresent the city. As the nation witnesses violent clashes between protesters and law enforcement in Los Angeles, people in other cities, like Seattle, are holding similar rallies in solidarity. This week alone, Seattle has already seen anti-ICE demonstrations at the Federal Building and pro-Palestine rallies at the U-District light rail station urging the University of Washington to cut ties with Boeing due to the company's military contracts with Israel. More protests are expected in the coming days. "The Trump administration's actions in Los Angeles are an extreme and egregious overreach of federal authority meant to escalate tensions and distract from his failures to live up to the promises he hasn't delivered on," the Mayor wrote in part. "We disagree with Trump's ICE policy of mass deportations that has already been on full display in American communities with arrests, detentions, and deportations often occurring in violation of due process." An anti-ICE rally is set for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Seattle's Cal Anderson Park, calling on the federal government to stop the deportations conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). What they're saying "The people of Los Angeles and surrounding areas have taken a courageous stand against Trump's reign of terror targeting immigrant families," wrote Party of Socialism and Liberation (PSL) wrote in an Instagram post. "In response, the administration has falsely labeled those taking to the streets in protest of the brutal war on immigrants as "rioters" and called in thousands of National Guard soldiers for a crackdown." The PSL called on protesters not to "let this repression intimidate" the community and encouraged Antifa to "invade Seattle" on Wednesday. Amid recent violence in Los Angeles, Harrell reiterated that violent actions would only serve to justify Trump's policies. "Seattle strongly supports the First Amendment rights of our residents, and we encourage residents to stand up for their values peacefully," Mayor Harrell wrote. "There is no room for violence. Violence and property damage are exactly what Trump wants to spin his false narrative of our city." Major anti-Trump demonstrations are scheduled across the U.S. on Saturday, June 14, including several in Washington state. The "NO KINGS" campaign is promoting a national day of action to protest what it calls the "increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption" of the Trump administration. The event coincides with President Trump's birthday and is intended to counter a planned military parade in Washington, D.C. What they're saying "In America, we don't put up with would-be kings. NO KINGS is a national day of action and mass mobilization in response to increasing authoritarian excesses and corruption from Trump and his allies," read a statement from NO KINGS organizers. "We've watched as they've cracked down on free speech, detained people for their political views, threatened to deport American citizens, and defied the courts. They've done this all while continuing to serve and enrich their billionaire allies." In addition to the protest at Cal Anderson Park in Seattle, demonstrations are planned in: Everett Tacoma Olympia Vancouver Spokane Other cities across the state The Source Information in this story comes from an official statement from Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell, SUPER UW, the Party for Socialism and Liberation, "NO KINGS" demonstration organizers and original reporting by FOX 13 Seattle.
