Despite law, US TikTok ban likely to remain on hold

CNA5 hours ago

SAN FRANCISCO: United States President Donald Trump is widely expected to extend the Thursday (Jun 19) deadline for TikTok to find a non-Chinese buyer or face a ban in the US.
It would be the third time Trump put off enforcing a federal law requiring its sale or ban, which was to take effect the day before his January inauguration.
"I have a little warm spot in my heart for TikTok," Trump said in an NBC News interview in early May.
"If it needs an extension, I would be willing to give it an extension."
Trump said a group of purchasers is ready to pay TikTok owner ByteDance "a lot of money" for the video-clip-sharing sensation's US operations.
Trump has repeatedly downplayed risks that TikTok is in danger, saying he remains confident of finding a buyer for the app's US business.
The president is "just not motivated to do anything about TikTok", said independent analyst Rob Enderle.
"Unless they get on his bad side, TikTok is probably going to be in pretty good shape."
Trump had long supported a ban or divestment, but reversed his position and vowed to defend the platform after coming to believe it helped him win young voters' support in the November election.
"Trump's not really doing great on his election promises," Enderle maintained.
"This could be one that he can actually deliver on."
DIGITAL COLD WAR?
Motivated by national security fears and belief in Washington that TikTok is controlled by the Chinese government, the ban took effect on Jan 19, one day before Trump's inauguration, with ByteDance having made no attempt to find a suitor.
TikTok "has become a symbol of the US-China tech rivalry; a flashpoint in the new Cold War for digital control", said Shweta Singh, an assistant professor of information systems at Warwick Business School in Britain.
"National security, economic policy, and digital governance are colliding," Singh added.
The Republican president announced an initial 75-day delay of the ban upon taking office.
A second extension pushed the deadline to Jun 19.
As of Monday, there was no word of a TikTok sale in the works.
TARIFF TURMOIL
Trump said in April that China would have agreed to a deal on the sale of TikTok if it were not for a dispute over tariffs imposed by Washington on Beijing.
ByteDance has confirmed talks with the US government, saying key matters needed to be resolved and that any deal would be "subject to approval under Chinese law".
Possible solutions reportedly include seeing existing US investors in ByteDance roll over their stakes into a new independent global TikTok company.
Additional US investors, including Oracle and private equity firm Blackstone, would be brought on to reduce ByteDance's share in the new TikTok.
Much of TikTok's US activity is already housed on Oracle servers, and the company's chairman, Larry Ellison, is a longtime Trump ally.
Uncertainty remains, particularly over what would happen to TikTok's valuable algorithm.
"TikTok without its algorithm is like Harry Potter without his wand - it's simply not as powerful," said Forrester Principal Analyst Kelsey Chickering.
Meanwhile, it appears TikTok is continuing with business as usual.
TikTok on Monday introduced a new "Symphony" suite of generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools for advertisers to turn words or photos into video snippets for the platform.

G7 expresses support for Israel, calls Iran source of instability, World News

WASHINGTON — The Group of Seven nations expressed support for Israel in a statement issued late on Monday (June 16) and labelled its rival Iran as a source of instability in the Middle East, with the G7 leaders urging broader de-escalation of hostilities in the region. The air war between Iran and Israel — which began on Friday when Israel attacked Iran with air strikes — has raised alarms in a region that had already been on edge since the start of Israel's military assault on Gaza in October 2023. "We affirm that Israel has a right to defend itself. We reiterate our support for the security of Israel," G7 leaders said in the statement. "Iran is the principal source of regional instability and terror," the statement added and said the G7 was "clear that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon." Israel attacked Iran on Friday in what it called a preemptive strike to prevent Tehran from developing nuclear weapons. Since then the two Middle Eastern rivals have exchanged blows, with Iranian officials reporting over 220 deaths, mostly civilians, while Israel said 24 civilians were killed. Iran denies seeking nuclear weapons and has said it has the right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes, including enrichment, as a party to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. Israel, which is not a party to the NPT, is the only country in the Middle East widely believed to have nuclear weapons. Israel does not deny or confirm that. President Donald Trump planned to leave the G7 summit in Canada early to return to Washington due to the Middle East situation. The United States has so far maintained that it is not involved in the Israeli attacks on Iran although Trump said on Friday the US was aware of Israel's strikes in advance and called them "excellent." Washington has warned Tehran not to attack US interests or personnel in the region. "We urge that the resolution of the Iranian crisis leads to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza," the G7 statement said, adding the nations were also ready to coordinate on safeguarding stability in energy markets. An Israeli strike hit Iran's state broadcaster on Monday while Trump said in a social media post that "everyone should immediately evacuate Tehran." Separately, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio also discussed the Israel-Iran war in phone calls with his British, French and European Union counterparts on Monday. Washington said Trump was still aiming for a nuclear deal with Iran. [[nid:719165]]

Thai trade proposal to be submitted to US this week, finance minister says

[BANGKOK] Thailand's formal trade proposal will be submitted to the US this week, with the first round of discussions set to take place online, the country's finance minister said on Tuesday (Jun 17), as it seeks to head off the threat of higher US tariffs. The South-east Asian nation faces a 36 per cent US tariff on its exports if a reduction cannot be negotiated before a 90-day pause that caps US President Donald Trump's 'reciprocal' tariffs at a baseline of 10 per cent expires in July. Formal trade negotiations with the United States will commence this week, starting with technical discussions at the official level, Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira told reporters. 'The latest formal proposal will be submitted following these discussions this week. After that, the first round of discussions with the US will be conducted online,' he said, without giving a date. Any potential in-person meetings would be considered after the initial talks, Pichai said. The formal proposal to be submitted would be under the main criteria previously announced, he said. On Monday, the commerce minister expressed confidence that both countries could agree on good terms on tariffs, possibly as low as 10 per cent. The United States was Thailand's largest export market last year, accounting for 18.3 per cent of total shipments worth US$55 billion. Washington has put its trade deficit with Thailand at US$45.6 billion. A meeting to consider a 157 billion baht (S$6.2 billion) economic stimulus project will be held on Wednesday, Pichai said, to support a sluggish economy, which could grow by just over 1 per cent this year due to the impact of US tariffs. Pichai also said he is open to working with any candidate chosen as the next central bank governor from the list of applicants, leaving the decision to the selection committee. He said he has already been closely engaging with the central bank on various collaborative matters. REUTERS

Vietnam parliament approves extension of VAT cut until end-2026

[HANOI] Vietnam's National Assembly, the country's lawmaking body, on Tuesday passed a resolution to extend a cut in the value-added tax rate until the end of next year, state media reported. Vietnam cut its VAT rate to 8 per cent from 10 per cent in early 2022 to support the economy after the Covid-19 pandemic, and has since extended it a number of times. The lowered rate applies to most goods and services, with exceptions for telecommunication, financial, insurance, real estate and stock trading services and metal products, Vietnam News Agency reported. The tax cut will cost 121.74 trillion dong (S$6 billion) in foregone revenue from July to the end of next year, the report cited a Finance Ministry report as saying. US President Donald Trump said earlier this year that value-added taxes in other countries carried a lot of blame for America's trade deficit. REUTERS
